Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489496). On 29 November 2023, a tragic accident occurred of the shores of an island in Japan. A CV-22 Osprey aircraft from Yokota Air Base in Tokyo crashed, killing all eight crew members. Being stationed at Yokota as an Air Force Bandsman during that trying time, my emotions turned to music as a gift of solidarity from the PACAF Band to the grieving family members. The completed music was delivered to my Commander a week after the shocking event.On 15 February 2024, the Base conducted a somber memorial service for the eight heroes who gave their last full measure of devotion in the line of duty. This piece was performed in lieu of “Taps” toward the end of the ceremony, as “Taps” was to be sounded at the Base Retreat Ceremony later that day. The gift of music was profound. Tears from the family members seated in the front rows flowed freely at the end of the performance, punctuated by increased sobs. High-quality professional prints of the score and parts were paid for by the United States Air Force and gifted to families of the deceased and distinguished visitors at the memorial service.One poignant detail was that at the performance during the memorial service, the brass quintet was augmented by a Japanese trumpet player from the nearby Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Band. This symbolic gesture of solidarity greatly impacted the profundity of the event.Last Full Measure, Op. 143, for brass quintet was completed 6 Dec 2023. This composition is not to be confused with Op. 33: Last Full Measure of Devotion, for 24 trumpets. However, in an allusion to that monumental early work, this present brass quintet’s “last measures” echo the final strain of “Taps” in memory of the eight crew members who perished. Duration: 3:00. Translated from Italian, the title of this work (“Scherzo Serioâ€) means “a serious joke.†The jocular nature resulting from the multi-meter and irregular meter, punctuated by strong jabs of sound, makes it impossible to tap one’s foot to the beat upon first hearing. The various sections of the work alternate between atonality and tertian harmony. As a whole it presents a clear three-part organization. This particularly fun and challenging two-minute brass quintet was completed in 2009 and premiered by the Faculty Brass Quintet from the University of Texas at San Antonio. MSgt Jim Bartelt (USAF, Retired) composed the majority of the percussion part when Gateway Brass from the USAF Band of the West toured with this piece in 2012.

The words “awe, wonder, majesty, inspiration, and contemplation†drove the musical strains of “Rushmore Trail.†The piece begins serenely (albeit with complex counterpoint throughout the brass parts), and the percussion part is needed to enhance the melodic line. The rest of the piece is full of fun, excitement, complexity, patriotism, and a variety of emotional play as the thematic content is presented and transformed in different ways. The overall feel is fulfillment of the American patriot’s dream to finally walk the trails and experience the grandeur of Mount Rushmore in person, shared with loved ones.

Grieg deeply respected his fellow musician and took no delay in producing the work. The march was originally written as a piano piece in A minor (wikipedia). This arrangement is adapted from his transcription for brass ensemble in Bb minor. Kum ba yah (Come by here) is an African American spiritual song of disputed origin, but known to be sung in the Gullah culture of the islands off South Carolina and Georgia, with ties to enslaved Central Africans. The song is thought to have spread from the islands to other Southern states and the North, as well as other places in the world. The first known recording, of someone known only as H. Wylie, who sang in the Gullah dialect, was recorded by folklorist Robert Winslow Gordon in 1926. It later became a standard campfire song in Scouting and summer camps and enjoyed broader popularity during the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s.The song was originally an appeal to God to come and help those in need. In American politics, the song would later become part of a phrase (sing Kumbaya) denoting unrealistic, excessively optimistic compromises.Here is a brilliant arrangement by S Smith-Masters orchestrated for a brass quintet and functional percussion.

This brass quintet was adapted from Dekker's original 18-piece big band composition which was commisioned and performed by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra in April 2023 at The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Kansas City, MO. This piece is medium difficult and is accessible to a good high school group or college/service level band. Forever And A Day can be performed by a traditional 5-piece brass quintet or by adding the optional auxiliary percussion parts provided.The piece begins with a wistful chorale before leading into a quasi funk groove that is propelled throughout the composition via contemporary harmonies, rhythms and mood transformations. The energy of this piece is fueled by the juxtaposition of modern style versus Classical elements.Careful attention should be paid to balance/blend, steady rhythm, dynamics, articulation and meter changes. Optional auxiliary percussion parts are included for shaker and tambourine if desired. Run time is 5:54. Enjoy!

This song started out as an Andean folk melody that Paul Simon came across in 1969 when he played a week-long engagement at a theater in Paris along with the South American group Los Incas, who played an instrumental version of the song called Paso Del Condor. Said Simon: I used to hang around every night to hear them play that. I loved it and I would play it all the time, and then I thought, Let's put words to it.The Peruvian songwriter Daniel Robles recorded this song in 1913, and copyrighted it in the United States in 1933 during his travels in America. When Simon recorded it with his added lyrics, he thought it was a traditional song, as that's what Los Incas told him. When Robles' son filed a lawsuit, Simon had to give Robles a composer credit on the song, with his estate getting those royalties.In discussing the song, Simon always talks about it as being based on a traditional Peruvian song, and we've never heard him mention Robles. This wasn't the first time Simon got tangled over songwriting credits on traditional melodies: Simon & Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair / Canticle was based on a folk song, but his arrangement came from a singer named Martin Carthy. Simon was always clear on his influences, but legal misunderstandings were a problem in these cases.Los Incas, who were the group that introduced Simon to the song, provided the instrumentation when they recorded it in Paris with Simon. Their leader, Jorge Milchberg, played a charango, which is an Andean string instrument made from the shell of an armadillo. Simon played acoustic guitar, and other members of Los Incas played flutes and percussion. When Simon brought the track to America, he added his lyrics. This was one of the easier songs to record for the Bridge Over Troubled Water album, since the backing track was already mixed together - it was just a matter of adding the vocals.The title translates to English as The Condor Passes. The lyrics Robles wrote to the song in 1913 are about returning home to his native Peru.Los Incas leader Jorge Milchberg got a composer credit on this song along with Simon and Robles. Milchberg later became the head of the group Urubamba and remained friends with Simon, who toured with them and produced their first American album. >>The Wainwright Sisters covered this for their 2015 Songs in the Dark album. Lucy Wainwright Roche explained to The Sun: I chose 'El Condor Pasa' because it was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on it guitar and it has a childlike quality to it, but it also has a darkness and sadness that fit in well with the album.Paul Simon performed this on both Sesame Street (in 1977) and The Muppet Show (in 1980).
