Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810934). One of the most famous movements from The Messiah, features the Bb Trumpet and Tuba, Trombone or Euphonium on the solo parts. The bass part goes up to a high C above the staff several times, so the tuba must have a good high register. The trombone and tuba solo parts can be switched and the trombonist from the quintet can play the solo bass part on tenor trombone, bass trombone or Euphoniums. The tuba can then move to the trombone part, which is a low part anyway. This work is in the key of Bb, down a 3rd from the original and very playable. This transcription comes in two keys; the original in D (high) or in Bb (lower). In the lower key it can be played on Bb trumpet and is much easier on the solo bass part if played by the tubist. If played in the original key, an optional organ part can be added to the quintet for a very symphonic effect. This work is a must on a Brass Quintet Christmas or Easter Concert.

Scottish, Air and Waltz (6/8 or 3/4 time). The antiquarian William Chappell claims the tune is English on the strength of its being included in a Collection of English Songs by Dale (who published about 1780-1794) under the title Lost is my quiet. However, the collector John Glen (1891) relates a delightful story of the tune's origins involving the famous Scots poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796), who wrote to publisher George Thomson in 1794:Do you known the history of the air? It is curious enough. A good many years ago, Mr. James Miller, writer in your good own (Edinburgh), a gentleman whom, possibly, you know, was in company with our good friend Clarke; and taling of Scottish music, Miller expressed an ardent ambition to be able to compose a Scots air. Mr. Clarke, partly by way of a joke, told him to keep to the black keys of the harpsichord, and preserve some kind of rhythm, and he would infallibly compose a Scots air. Certain it is, that, in a few days, Mr. Miller produced the rudiments of an air which Mr. Clarke, with some touches and corrections, fashioned into the tune in question. Ritson, you know, has the same story of the black keys; but this account which I have just given you, Mr. Clarke informed me of several years ago.Miller's tune was first published under the title Caledonian Hunt's Delight (The) in Gow's 2nd Collection (1788), but Glen concludes that it is more likely that Lost is my quiet is a poor adaptation and nothing else. He also notes there is a tune having a supposed resemblance in Playford's Appollo's Banquet (1690) entitled Scotch Tune (A) (No. 68), but in the end he believes that neither Chappell's arguments nor facts are strong enough to deprive Mr. Miller of his claim. The Caledonian Hunt's Delight appears also in George Thomson's A Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for the Voice (Edinburgh, 1793-1797), arranged by Kozeluch. A rondo on the air was composed by Domenico Corri (1746-1825) under the title Favourite Irish Air (which, of course, it is not).

Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1405391). Organ Grinder's Swing is a song composed by Will Hudson, with lyrics credited to Mitchell Parish and Irving Mills (Mills was the publisher), published in 1936. It became associated with the Jimmie Lunceford orchestra. Hudson based the Organ Grinder's Swing on the nursery rhyme I Love Coffee, I Love Tea.Ella Fitzgerald recorded the song in November 1936 with her Savoy Eight, and recorded it for a second time with the Count Basie Orchestra for her last album with Basie, 1979's A Classy Pair. Other contemporary versions were recorded by Benny Goodman, Django Reinhardt and the Mills Brothers. It was also featured in a 1937 Popeye short Organ Grinder's Swing.Organist Jimmy Smith recorded Organ Grinder's Swing on his 1965 album Organ Grinder Swing. Vibraphonist Milt Jackson recorded it again in 1976 live at the Kosei Nenkin, Tokyo, with Teddy Edwards, Cedar Walton, Ray Brown and Billy Higgins.I have adapted this song for an organ, brass and percussion concert to something light and jazzy and requested my partner in crime, Sam Harrill, to add the percussion part. No, not really:  no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . .  Well, you get the picture.  But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style.  And that’s what this is:  “The Peanut Vendor†in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.   Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero†(“The Peanut Vendorâ€) was first recorded in the late 1920s.  The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts.  Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze†in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!).     Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio MachÃn on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold.     English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.† One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made.  That’s a lot of peanuts.    Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor†in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records.  His version was completely instrumental.  Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis.  A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.† “The Peanut Vendor†subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.   This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets.  So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody.  Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba.  The “shrieking dissonances†are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone.  The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody.  Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style.  Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments.  (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances†are still there!)     Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. The opening of this 4-minute piece is dance-like, intimating a celebratory mood up front—alone at first, but shared with the ensemble throughout the piece. After much celebration, the piece ends solemnly, as if giving each other final hugs and good-byes. Every Airman has a story to tell. “Farewell Celebration†is part of my story as an Airman musician. It is a fitting farewell to the Heartland of America Band stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska, and to the entire American Midwest, as my family and I finalized our plans to uproot for an extraordinary three-year adventure in Asia. Work on this composition began toward the end of July and beginning of August 2021 as a melody with instructions to be the opening of a brass quintet piece, beginning with trumpet alone. It remained in that state until January 2022 when I entered this sketch into the computer to be worked on sporadically along with several other works in progress. When I contracted Covid-19 in July 2022, all of these works and other incipient pieces received attention, but this one more than most others. In the fall, I felt an urgency to complete it as a sentimental gesture of enthusiastic good-byes due to many life changes taking place. In particular, my fourth son, Paul, was departing for two years for Brazil. I was compelled to complete this work before he left on October 17, 2022, which I accomplished the day prior to his departure. In addition to Paul’s farewell, two co-workers with whom I had worked closely in the Air Force brass quintet called “Offutt Brass,†were also moving on with new exciting chapters in their lives. MSgt Ben Kadow, our fantastic trombonist, had received an assignment to move to Germany, leaving us on November 8. And MSgt Ryan Heseltine, our unparalleled French horn player, retired at the end of the year. On top of all that, in September I was given an assignment to move to Japan the following summer. Some farewells are more difficult to endure than others, though all seem to have varied brands of profound emotion. In contrast to saying good-bye to a loved one who passes away, all of these farewells were joyful, albeit poignant. “Farewell Celebration†is dedicated to my son Paul, to my outstanding professional colleagues, Ben Kadow and Ryan Heseltine, and to all our friends and family members who we left behind as we moved to Japan.

Thrower: In July 2018 I spent nine days in Barra Mansa, Brazil, which lies a couple hours west of Rio de Janeiro. The occasion of my visit was the second annual International Music Festival. The festival coordinator, Vantoil de Sousa, Jr. brought me there to be the resident trumpet professor for the week, and to premiere my three-movement Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra at the Closing Concert. As I speak Portuguese somewhat fluently, many of the 20 trumpet students of all levels became great friends. Throughout the week I kept mentioning that my next composition was going to be “Lembranças do Brasil†as yet another musical journal entry in my life’s soundtrack. Truly, I had a lifetime of extraordinary experiences in Brazil during that week, from the outstanding food to my humorous self-introduction to capivaras! Overall, that week was supremely memorable and definitely a highlight of my life. One morning in early November 2018, a 'feel-good' cool melody woke me up and wouldn’t leave. It developed in my mind and I was in a spectacular mood all day long. It felt like Bobby McFarrin’s 'Don’t Worry, Be Happy' or Pharrell Williams’ 'Happy,' though in a vastly different style from either. This was my happy song. Long hours flowed quickly through the next few days as I worked out the form and details of the music, which screamed for the promised title 'Lembranças do Brasil'! Happy memories of my beautiful week in Brazil, some of which are captured on the front cover collage, now have the perfect soundtrack in my musical journal. This version was tweaked from the original five flugelhorns, and lends itself very well (perhaps even better) in the brass quintet setting.

The Symphony No. 8 has been called more of a Slavonic rhapsody than a symphony. The folk-song character of this symphony is evident throughout, which makes so much fun to play.
