The folk music of Ireland is very engaging as evident in this setting of a medley of Irish folk songs. The Jazz Age was a period in the 1920s, ending with the Great Depression, in which jazz music and dance styles became popular, mainly in the United States, but also in Britain, France and elsewhere. Jazz originated in New Orleans as a fusion of African and European music and played a significant part in wider cultural changes in this period, and its influence on pop culture continued long afterwards. The Jazz Age is often referred to in conjunction with the Roaring Twenties. "Mary, Did You Know?" is a Christmas song with lyrics written by Mark Lowry and music written by Buddy Greene. It was originally recorded by Christian recording artist Michael English in 1991. The song has since gone on to become a modern Christmas classic. This is a very playable brass quintet arrangement preserving the natural vitality of the piece. The use of flugelhorn allows the blend of voices so evident in vocal music. ( It certainly works fine for trumpet as well ). ( Duration 3:16 )

? If ? is a very lyrical tune written by David Gates and performed by the group Bread. The song dates from 1969. This is a very playable arrangement of the piece scored for Brass Quintet. Flugelhorns are requested but optional. All instruments get a chance to play the theme and be involved. Starting simply and ending with a natural full chordal resolution, this piece is a beautiful and effective change of pace for any concert or recital. ( Performance time runs 2:50.)

There seems to be a dearth of literature for brass quintet that addresses the folk songs of Israel. ? Mazel Tov! ? is an arrangement of several of these folk tunes. Included are: Chusen Kala Mazel Tov, Avinu Malkenu, Hasidic Waltz, Dodi Li, I have a Little Dreidel, Hatikvah and Hava Nagilla. Arranging this piece was a way for me to research and hear most of this music for the first time. It is very playable and a nice addition to any program. I hope you enjoy playing it.
