The Finnish NA arranged for Brass Quintet.There also versions for String & full Orchestra in my two stores.The anthem lyrics were taken from a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Swedish-speaking poet, called â€œVÃ¥rt landâ€ (Our Land). The song was first sung in 1848 by a student group and became popular in Scandinavia and many of his patriotic poems, including VÃ¥rt land were used by promoters of Finnish nationalism. The poem was translated into Finnish some decades later, after VÃ¥rt land was well established as a national song, by Paavo Eemil Kajander and became the anthem before 1917 independence.Â Estoniaâ€˜s anthem, adopted 20 years later, has the same melody, however the last few lines do not repeat as they do normally in the Finnish anthem.Â Interestingly, the anthem has never been officially legislated as the Finnish anthem, but rather is traditionally used as the anthem. The extra parts are not necessary, but are provided if you have extra players such as a Bb Piccolo Trumpet & Bb Trombone/Euphonium in TC.New Orleans-born clarinetist Barney Bigard is likely the originator of this tune, a simple blues riff in the key of C. Since Bigard was a veteran member of Duke Ellingtonâ€™s Orchestra in 1941, Duke had a slice of the pie, too, and undoubtedly arranged the piece for the orchestra. Yet Duke referred to the number somewhat disparagingly as â€œone of our more or less trite things.â€The number was introduced in a Soundie short film. These three-minute features, produced to be shown on a jukebox-type player, illustrated the band miming to a pre-recorded performance. Entitled â€œJam Sessionâ€ the Soundie was filmed late in 1941 along with four other Ellington numbers. Duke introduces various band members, who then solo: Ray Nance (violin), Ben Webster (tenor sax), Rex Stewart (cornet), Joe â€œTricky Samâ€ Nanton (trombone), and Sonny Greer (drums). The complete ensemble carries the tune to its finish with composer Bigard (clarinet) providing some improvised upper register piping.â€œC Jam Bluesâ€ was formally recorded under that title in January, 1942, for RCA Victor Records. It continued be a staple of the Ellington repertoire, generally featuring a handful of the soloists in the band.Co-composer Barney Bigard left Dukeâ€™s band in June 1942, and after a period of freelancing joined Louis Armstrongâ€™s All-Stars in August, 1947. â€œC Jam Bluesâ€ was one of his nightly features with Satchâ€™s ensemble along with â€œTea for Two.â€ Despite playing the tune hundreds, or perhaps even thousands of times during his tenure with Ellington and Armstrong, he continued to perform it during his freelance years in the 1950s until shortly before his death in 1980.In the late-1950s very simple words were added (â€œBaby, letâ€™s go down to â€˜Dukeâ€™s Placeâ€™,â€ etc.) which strangely took a three-member team of writers to assemble: songwriters William Katz and Ruth Roberts and record producer Bob Thiele. Clarinetist Barney Bigard was not included in the composer credits of the song version, although he was a member of Louis Armstrongâ€™s All-Stars when they recorded â€œDukeâ€™s Place,â€ featuring Louis on the vocal, with Ellington in 1961.The piece typically features several improvised solos. The final solo continues in the upper register as the entire ensemble comes in and the music grows to a climax. An arrangement of the Ã…land Islands National Song (Song of the Ã…lander - Ã…lÃ¤nningens sÃ¥ng) for Brass Quintet.Ã…lÃ¤nningens sÃ¥ng (English: Song of the Ã…lander; Finnish: Ahvenanmaalaisten laulu), is the official anthem of the Ã…land Islands, an autonomous Swedish-speaking province of Finland. Adopted in 1922, the anthem's words are by John Grandell and the music was composed by Johan Fridolf Hagfors. The song was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn 1922. In Ã…land the song is mostly sung on Midsummer's Eve and on the National day of Ã…land in June 9th. The song originally had four verses, but the third verse is omitted for a long time when the song is sung and often when it appears in print.Johan Fridolf Hagfors (11 March 1857â€“18 August 1931) was a Swedish newspaper publisher, music critic and composer, most known for having composed the two songs ModersmÃ¥lets sÃ¥ng (The mother tongue's song) and Ã…lÃ¤nningens sÃ¥ng (Song of the Ã…lender).Born in Orimattila, he got a Cand.phil degree in 1881. In 1883 he became publicist of the small Ã…bo paper Turun Lehti which was published in Finnish but at the same time Svecoman; it became the only newspaper with that combination to reach a wide readership. He also worked as a teacher in Ã…bo.He composed several songs for male quartets. ModersmÃ¥lets sÃ¥ng was first performed in 1989 and is today considered an unofficial hymn for the Swedish-speaking population of Finland. Ã…lÃ¤nningens sÃ¥ng, for which he composed the melody, was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn in 1922 and is today the regional hymn for the Ã…land islands.In 1912 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.Due to stiff competition, Turun Lehti ceased publication in 1919. Hagfors subsequently moved to Stockholm and obtained Swedish citizenship. He died in 1931.
