It is a slow piece is a South American style.Based on the poem: Lyrics: 1. My roots once clung to the earth, The wind is calm the river still. As if nothing else survives. My world is empty, am I alive? From my limbs a fruit was plucked, Within its sheath my heart was tucked. Its seeds contained my unknown future, Inside a flesh so sweet and pure. 2. Would my seeds find a place to fall? Nice fertile ground so they'd grow tall. Or would they find some barren ground. Where no love or nurture can be found? Without the fruit my limbs were bare. An old tree nearby just stood and stared. Why should it stop and help the tree Who let its fruit be taken from thee. 3. About the charmer who took the fruit? Should he help to make them grow? Instead he walked right off the land. With barely a wave of his hand. He bit the apple as he walked away. Enjoying its flesh but did not stay. No care at all for the damage he’d done He took the heart from his loved one. 4. So grow another fruit you say. And yes that would be the logical way. But some trees grow abundant fruit. Small and nice without dispute. Others instead grow one to perfection. Round and sweet, on close inspection. But once it’s gone then that is all. Then no more shall ever fall. 5. I sit here on the barren hill, The wind is calm the river still. As if nothing else survives. The world is empty no soul survives. Dedicated to Ben van den Akker.

The other band members wanted some beach music; hence, Beach Boys. (It should be noted that the surf's up seriously here only when there's a hurricane),Cash Box called 1964's I Get Around an exciting, tailored-for-teen-tastes hot rod stomper. Who can argue with that?I don't know if this one's a hot rod stomper -- it ain't fancy in any way -- but it's just the thing if you're playing for an audience drinking beer in the sunshine.If you'd like alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. When I began arranging for brass quintet more than ten years ago, I was surprised to find this classic tune from Pal Joey didn't have an arrangement! I'm glad I finally get to share it with you. There are changes in the trombone solo, but there's also one written out. It's a bit high, so feel free to take things down an octave, write your own, or play the changes as you see fit!

Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1393231). When I Fall in Love is a popular song, written by Victor Young (music) and Edward Heyman (lyrics). It was introduced in Howard Hughes' last film One Minute to Zero as the instrumental titled Theme from One Minute to Zero. Jeri Southern sang on the first vocal recording released in April 1952 with the song's composer, Victor Young, handling the arranging and conducting duties. The song has become a standard, with many artists recording it; the first hit version was sung by Doris Day released in July 1952.Day's recording was made on June 5, 1952. It was released by Columbia Records as catalog number 39786 and issued with the flip side Take Me in Your Arms. The song reached number 20 on the Billboard chart.A 1996 recording by Natalie Cole, sung as a duet with her father Nat King Cole using vocals from his 1956 version, won 1996 Grammys for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and Best Instrumental Arrangement with Accompanying Vocal(s).Lovely chord progressions here! On the train ride there I ended up next to a kid who was grooving to music I could hear snippets of through his headphones. This movement reflects characteristics of the sounds I heard on my way into the city.II. One for the lovebirds…It’s time to cuddle up next to your partner and take a trip down memory lane. This movement is an ode to the slow songs one may have experienced from a dance in the 1950’s.III. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. During the production of his opera Lucio Silla which was being performed there in the Teatro Regio Ducale. It was written for the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini, who had sung the part of the primo uomo Cecilio in Lucio Silla the previous year. While waiting for the end of the run (from 26 December 1772 to 25 January 1773), Mozart composed the motet for his singer, whose technical excellence he admired. Its first performance took place at the Theatine Church on 17 January 1773, while Rauzzini was still singing in Mozart's opera at night. Mozart made some revisions around 1780. On 30 May 1779, a Trinity Sunday, a revised version was performed by Francesco Ceccarelli at the Holy Trinity Church, Salzburg. Another revised version was intended for Christmas. The manuscripts of the two Salzburg versions were discovered in 1978 in St. Jakob, Wasserburg am Inn. In modern times, the motet is usually sung by a female soprano.I was tempted to combine the soprano and a brass quintet. We have performed this arrangement quite successfully at many venues, including a national music festival (Wakkerstroom, South Africa, March 2023).

Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768520). Victor Ewald 27 November 1860 - 16 April 1935 Ewald was a Russian composer of music, mainly for conical brass instruments. He was born in Saint Petersburg and died in Leningrad. He also collected and published Russian folk songs. Ewald’s professional life, like that of many of his musical contemporaries, was in an entirely different field; that of a civil engineer, in which he excelled, being appointed in 1900 as professor and manager of the Faculty of Construction Materials at the Institute of Civil Engineers. Brass players however are indebted to him for something very different – a series of quintets which have become a staple of the repertoire and which represent almost the only, and certainly the most extended examples of original literature in the Romantic style. Ewald’s formal musical training began in 1872 when he enrolled at the St Petersburg Conservatory at the age of twelve. Founded in 1861 by Anton Rubenstein, this institution was the first of its kind in Russia and it was here that Ewald received lessons in cornet, piano, horn, cello, harmony and composition. As an adult he worked alongside fellow musical nationalists known collectively as the Mighty Handful-Borodin, Mily Balakirev, CeÌsar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky and the most famous of all, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. All of these men had day jobs in non-musical fields.Ewald’s contributions as a composer reflected an abiding love for brass instruments for which he wrote his quintets scored originally for two cornets, alto horn, baritone horn and tuba. I've edited these four quartets using Ewald's original instrumentation, but there are also separate substitute parts for the modern brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn in F, trombone and tuba). Or maybe a private resort island in Fiji, but that was probably named after the song. And the music video for Kokomo was filmed at the Grand Floridian Hotel at Disney World in inland Central Florida, where the surf is also never quite up. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808700). Brandon Thomas’ three-act farce, Charley’s Aunt, opened in London in 1892 and was a huge success. It has since been performed and adapted many times. One such adaptation was Where’s Charley? a 1948 Broadway version with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. Ray Bolger played the starring role as Charley, and its most memorable number was the second act’s Once In Love With Amy. Every night Bolger would perform the number, then turn to the audience and invite them to sing along with him. They loved it, and Bolger would continue to perform it as his signature act for years even after the play closed. The rhythmic and melodic nature of Once In Love With Amy, particularly its chorus, seems to lend itself to performance by musical instruments in the lower registers. And that’s what inspired this arrangement in which bass tuba carries the load with strong support from euphonium and tuba. All play the eight-measure introduction, while the verse-I caught you, sir, having a look at her as she went strolling by-features euphonium and tuba playing melody while bass tuba provides tempo and pulse. Then comes the familiar chorus-Once in love with Amy, always in love with Amy-and bass tuba takes over. The first time through, bass tuba plays melody with the other two providing accompaniment; the second time, bass tuba plays an intricate counterpoint while euph and tuba do a rather smooth swing version of the melody. Then comes the surprise ending in which all three participate. Most players will have little trouble. The arrangement consists of 75 measures in 4/4 time. There are several tempo changes; the fastest is quarter note equals 108. Key signature is G, changing to F at measure 44. All notes for euphonium and bass tuba should be within normal playing range. Tuba, on the other hand, plays quite a few G and A notes at the top of the treble clef. Sweetwater Brass Press also offers a similar version of Once In Love With Amy arranged for brass quintet. This arrangement was completed in 2020, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 1 second. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. In all of my years as a flutist, conductor, and now writer, I never heard of Paull before, but I was curious enough to look for any sound files of his music, and came across both live piano performances and piano roll performances of the Ben HurChariot Race March on YouTube.Edward Taylor Paul, known in some circles as The Other March King was born on February 16th, 1858. In Gerrardstown, Virginia, now West Virginia. While not too much is known about his early years, we do know that his adult years were spent as itinerant musician, instrument sales person, selling pianos and organs, composer, as well as publisher.The Civil War era had Patrick Sarsfield Gillmore as the most famous bandleader and composer. As children of this era, John Philip Sousa and Edward Taylor Paull, were destined to follow in Gillmore's footsteps. While Sousa became successful through his work as both conductor and composer, even attaining the moniker of March King, the road to success and fame was more difficult for Paull. We do know, that by 1878, he was the manager of a music store that sold pianos and organs, eventually going bankrupt, and having to be bailed out by his own father. By 1894, he was the manager of the Richmond Music Publishing Company, and this was the same year that he was issued his first copyright on the Ben Hur Chariot Race March This was originally written for piano, particularly, the parlour piano. This was to become one of many marches and parlour piano compositions by 'E.T, Paull. He may not have been the most skilled musician of his era, but he was wise enough to realize how popular marches became in 1880's and '90's.Paull's compositions were also associated with beautiful color covers. He was fortunate to live in Richmond, Virginia, and the lithography company of A. Hoen & Company, provided him the highest quality and richly-colored art work for his compositions. This company was unique, in that they used a five- color process, which added depth to the color. Thepopularity of marches, plus the great covers, both contributed to the 60,000 copies that the Ben Hur Chariot Race March sold in its first printing. Not bad, for a first composition.Paull found inspiration for his march from the novel Ben Hur, written and published by General Lew Wallace in 1880. Paull dedicated his composition to Wallace, who sold many copies of his book. Eventually, there was a stage play and three film renditions; one in 1907, 1925, and 1959. Some time in the 1920's, the Sousa Band recorded the Ben Hur Chariot Race March, and of course, the MGM, 1925 film version, helped in a renewed popularity of Paull's composition.Edward Taylor Paull died in 1924, and his wife retained the copyright, until it went into public domain. What remains today are a few music examples in the Library of Congress collection, as well as some 78's and piano rolls. While I did my research on this piece, I tried to find any applicable Sousa manuscripts of a possible arrangement, but I could not findany. I usually write for woodwinds, but in this case, I thought that a brass quintet would sound far better. I also chose a moderate tempo, so as not to lose some of the nuances of the original composition.

Thrower: In July 2018 I spent nine days in Barra Mansa, Brazil, which lies a couple hours west of Rio de Janeiro. The occasion of my visit was the second annual International Music Festival. The festival coordinator, Vantoil de Sousa, Jr. brought me there to be the resident trumpet professor for the week, and to premiere my three-movement Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra at the Closing Concert. As I speak Portuguese somewhat fluently, many of the 20 trumpet students of all levels became great friends. Throughout the week I kept mentioning that my next composition was going to be “Lembranças do Brasil†as yet another musical journal entry in my life’s soundtrack. Truly, I had a lifetime of extraordinary experiences in Brazil during that week, from the outstanding food to my humorous self-introduction to capivaras! Overall, that week was supremely memorable and definitely a highlight of my life. One morning in early November 2018, a 'feel-good' cool melody woke me up and wouldn’t leave. It developed in my mind and I was in a spectacular mood all day long. It felt like Bobby McFarrin’s 'Don’t Worry, Be Happy' or Pharrell Williams’ 'Happy,' though in a vastly different style from either. This was my happy song. Long hours flowed quickly through the next few days as I worked out the form and details of the music, which screamed for the promised title 'Lembranças do Brasil'! Happy memories of my beautiful week in Brazil, some of which are captured on the front cover collage, now have the perfect soundtrack in my musical journal. This version was tweaked from the original five flugelhorns, and lends itself very well (perhaps even better) in the brass quintet setting.

As a uniformed member of the Armed Forces, mine is a unique position of being able to share such a meaningful gift in an official capacity that bears great depth and meaning far beyond similar civilian cultural exchanges.Before being assigned to Yokota Air Base in Japan, I was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Part of my duties as a trumpeter in the military is to sound “Taps” as part of the full complement of a fallen hero’s military honors. Among the most somber occasions of fulfilling that special privilege was on behalf of a WWII Seaman, Wesley Brown. In 2021, his remains were identified and shipped home to America’s heartland after 80 years of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.Fast forward to August 6 and 9, 2023, shortly after I arrived at my new duty station in Japan. On those dates in 1946, nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I recorded in my journal on the 9th that my walk to work was quite sobering as I realized that my presence there was a direct result of that complicated global conflict. With significant symbolism, Pacific Brass read “Rising Sun” for the first time that day.After nearly 80 years, the post-war occupation has evolved to a thriving partnership most worthy of celebration. This composition “Rising Sun” potently delivers a personalized celebratory gesture from an American Airman to all those communities we serve throughout the glorious “land of the rising sun.”In the music itself, one can picture a dim early dawn with the serene opening of the low brass trio. The musical content is repeated more loudly, with brilliant trumpet interjections as the sun crests over the early horizon. The music morphs and grows; varies and repeats, as it is intended to depict the subtly but rapidly changing beauties of an orange-filled sunrise. At last, the colors fade and the new day has begun, with a full brightness of hope.

In an interview with Sue Lawley in 1992, Clapton said of the song, There is a song that I’ve written for a movie, but in actual fact it was in the back of my head but it didn’t really have a reason for being until I was scoring this movie which I did a little while ago and then it sort of had a reason to be. And it is a little ambiguous because it could be taken to be about Conor but it also is meant to be part of the film. Conor, Clapton's four-year-old son, fell from a window of a 53rd-floor New York apartment owned by his mother's friend on March 20, 1991. Clapton arrived at the apartment shortly after the accident. The song was Clapton's best-selling single in the United States and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. It won three Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. Use your imagination.If you've ever been to the Munich (Munchen, auch mit umlaut) Oktoberfest, this song is everywhere (as it is with most Oktoberfest celebrations everywhere). But it's always a part of the program at the Munich Hofbrauhaus.The song was written in Berlin in 1935. Wilhelm Wiga Gabriel wrote other songs as well, mostly for the Nazis.
