Arranged for Brass Quintet Russia’s first anthem used the same melody as the British God Save the King, and, like the British anthem, was also a hymn to the ruler. The melody was popular in Russia after the War of 1812 with France and several Russian poets penned Russian words to it. Zhukovsky’s lyrics were published in A Son of the Fatherland magazine in 1815 and was soon adopted as the national anthem. (The poet Alexander Pushkin also wrote two additional verses to the anthem, but I don’t believe they were official.

One of the United Kingdom’s most popular hymns, ‘Be Thou My Vision’ is a traditional Christian hymn with Irish origins. The text is based on a Middle Irish poem most attributed to Dallán Forgaill, an early Christian Irish poet born in 530AD. Since the early 20th century, the text has been sung to an Irish folk tune, known in church hymnals as ‘Slane’. Today, ‘Be Thou My Vision’ is often heard at both weddings and funerals, as well as Sunday church services across the United Kingdom. It is said to be a favourite of King Charles, and a newly set version of the hymn was performed at his coronation service at Westminster Abbey.                                                                                                                                Performance Time Approx. 1:30 minutes.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811024). Nick Francis is a very talented Canadian composer. His Quintet's 3 movements are fused into a single macro-movement of about 17 minutes in length. The work requires advanced performers with the Trumpet parts being in C. The work opens with a gentle hymn. The music gradually works itself up into a heroic tune.<P> The second movement begins in the barren wasteland left by the disintegration of the first. After a time, paraphrased fragments of the Anglican seafaring hymn Eternal Father begin emerging. Gradually the earlier wasteland feel begins to bloom, and the movement closes quietly in E major. The Finale is in two sections. The 2nd section brings the music back to E-flat major, with all of its heroic properties, and heads the quintet towards a thunderous climax followed by a mad gallop to the finish. This music is dedicated with deep gratitude to Nate and to all the members of the Sapphire Brass, without whose confidence in new music it might never have been written.

In 1992 the Ukrainian Parliament chose as the national anthem music composed in 1863 by Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Catholic priest. Verbytsky originally wrote the score as a solo song and later for orchestra to accompany a patriotic poem written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer in the Kyiv region. In his poem Shche Ne Vmerla Ukrayina (which means Ukraine is not yet dead), Chubynsky expressed the mixture of hope and desperation felt by Ukrainians over their continuous struggle to rule their own land. Widely sung around the country as the Hymn to Ukraine, both the melody and lyrics were similar to those of Polish and Serbian anthems. In 1917 it became the anthem of the short-lived Ukrainian National Republic, but during the Soviet era it was replaced. Over time there were various changes and additions to Chubynsky's original words, resulting in several slightly differing versions of the Hymn to Ukraine. Following independence in 1991, many Ukrainians were disatisfied with the pessimistic tone, so the Ukrainian government made the Verbytsky score official but hesitated to approve the Chubynsky's lyrics. A comission sponsored contests for replacement lyrics, but none were decided on. Agreement finally came in 2003, when the Parliament passed and the President signed an act recognizing a slight change to the version of Chubynsky's lyrics that were usually sung. Section A exposits the hymn. Section B goes into a minor key with a legubrious and funereal feeling. The first trumpet adds a phrase that is almost like a waling quality. Section B then ends on a picrady third followed by an Italian augmented sixth chord. Section C is now the newly modulated major key with a descant by yours truly added.

This arrangement adapted for brass quintet was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, that is, inspiring and significant to the already known choral symphony by Beethoven, indicated to be performed by young music students, who want to enter the symphonic music, moreover, it can also be used by professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion.
