O Come, All Ye Faithful (originally written in Latin as Adeste Fideles) is a Christmas carol which has been attributed to various authors, including John Francis Wade (1711–1786), with the earliest copies of the hymn all bearing his signature, John Reading (1645–1692) and King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656).[1][2][3]The original four verses of the hymn were extended to a total of eight, and these have been translated into many languages. The English translation of O Come, All Ye Faithful by the English Catholic priest Frederick Oakeley, written in 1841, is widespread in most English speaking countries.[2][4] The present harmonisation is from the English Hymnal (1906).[2]. As you might guess from the title, master Broadway composer Irving Berlin's 1918 song They Were All Out of Step But Jim pokes good-natured fun at a mother's pride in her soldier son's marching prowess. The music that Berlin uses for these lyrics is perfect for them. It combines a little patriotic flair with a little flavor of an Irish jig. Our arrangement of this piece spreads melodic responsibilities among the top four parts. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba). Gospel music has infiltrated the New Orleans jazz repertoire since the very early days of jazz. Although gospel songs were traditionally played by jazz bands at funerals or church, it is now common that these songs are also played in secular venues. “Down by the Riverside†is an example of such a song, adapted by jazz musicians to fit the New Orleans jazz or brass band style. It has been a staple in New Orleans jazz since at least the early 1920s. This arrangement for Brass Quintet plus optional Acoustic Bass and Drum Set is written in the style of a New Orleans Brass Band, the kind of tune you might hear at a Second Line Parade or Jazz Funeral. The videos and photos that inspired this short but compelling composition and subsequent YouTube video were all shot on 5 Jun 2023 while visiting family near the desert of eastern Utah. Springtime in that region had been particularly wet, so the cactus flowers were in full bloom and everything that was customarily brown was green! That glorious excursion with my wife’s sister and her husband was one of the final huzzahs in America before moving to Japan for several years. The YouTube post of the exquisite videos and pictures was finalized and published on 16 Jun 2024, reminiscing on our one-year anniversary of being in Japan. Duration: 1:30.

Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158390). “Pony Express Trail†is the fourth substantial composition in a masterful series of “American Trails†for brass quintet. This piece commemorates the 160th year of the astounding system of stations and riders that was ingeniously devised to quickly deliver mail and other communications from America’s Missouri River frontier to the rapidly growing western territories. The music in this 4½-minute work is rambunctious, rhythmically unpredictable, and yet extremely exciting and listenable to the average audience member. The use of three woodblocks as the only percussion allude strongly to the clopping whirl of horses’ hooves, though not in a rhythmically mimicking manner. The opening motifs immediately develop into a manic ride across the Wild West, and lay the groundwork for all melodic content. These simple motifs smack of cowboy music, subtly borrowed from the movie theme to “Magnificent Seven†composed by Elmer Bernstein. Other influences for this piece include Aaron Copland’s harmonies and wide intervals, and the virtuosic brass band cornet writing of Gustav Holst and Malcolm Arnold. In the style of an operatic three-part overture, the middle slow section memorializes the tragic loss of 16 lives during the Paiute war in the summer of 1860. Being a rider or a station attendant for the Pony Express was perilous on any leg of the trail, but especially during that time in the Nevada Territory. In a very real way, all these men were iconic heroes of the American West.

In 1992 the Ukrainian Parliament chose as the national anthem music composed in 1863 by Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Catholic priest. Verbytsky originally wrote the score as a solo song and later for orchestra to accompany a patriotic poem written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer in the Kyiv region. In his poem Shche Ne Vmerla Ukrayina (which means Ukraine is not yet dead), Chubynsky expressed the mixture of hope and desperation felt by Ukrainians over their continuous struggle to rule their own land. Widely sung around the country as the Hymn to Ukraine, both the melody and lyrics were similar to those of Polish and Serbian anthems. In 1917 it became the anthem of the short-lived Ukrainian National Republic, but during the Soviet era it was replaced. Over time there were various changes and additions to Chubynsky's original words, resulting in several slightly differing versions of the Hymn to Ukraine. Following independence in 1991, many Ukrainians were disatisfied with the pessimistic tone, so the Ukrainian government made the Verbytsky score official but hesitated to approve the Chubynsky's lyrics. A comission sponsored contests for replacement lyrics, but none were decided on. Agreement finally came in 2003, when the Parliament passed and the President signed an act recognizing a slight change to the version of Chubynsky's lyrics that were usually sung. Only the first stanza and the refrain (which is sung twice) were approved in President Kuchma's official proclamationThis arrangement for Brass Quintet, in the brass friendly key of g minor, is easily accessible to those students who play at the Intermediate Level. Performance Time: 1 minute 35 seconds

One of my last assignments as an Air Force musician before being stationed in Japan was to perform music in support of the 50th commemoration of what has become known in America as “Vietnam Memorial Day.” It is observed on March 29 every year, the date when the last U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam in 1973. After the memorable ceremony in 2023, I lingered to talk with those mature veterans and to hear some of their experiences. It was a strange feeling when I told them that my first assignment at my new duty station in Japan would be a series of cultural exchange performances in Vietnam. What a somber generational bridge.I was only in Japan for a matter of days, including some intense rehearsals, before Pacific Brass (the brass quintet from the U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific) packed up and headed to Hanoi to start our brief musical outreach in three cities. My reflections were sobering as I contrasted my military service in Vietnam with the veterans whom I had just honored three months prior. During some off-duty time, all five of the Pacific Brass military musicians found our way to the well-known Hòa Ló Prison, infamously known as the “Hanoi Hilton.” Indeed, how vastly different was my brief military service in Vietnam!To the Vietnamese people, the “American War,” as they call it, is ancient history. They are extremely forward-thinking, putting those dark years far from them, looking to the bright future that is theirs. What an educational bridge of paradigms. Although it was important for us as U.S. Servicemembers to witness the Hòa Ló Prison firsthand, our lot was to experience the beautiful present-day Vietnam with its rich culture of food, street shops, temples, dance, music, and other wonders that awed us all—including gongs!Our trombone player purchased a gong in a shop that sold little else besides gongs of all sizes and pitches. That struck me as quintessentially Vietnamese, and the sights and sounds of that modest shop lingered in my imagination. As we absorbed the extraordinary majesty of the Temple of Literature in Hanoi, ideas for this musical composition started to formulate as a bridge connecting American musical culture with Vietnamese traditional gongs. For practicality in both notation and live performance, I scored the consort of 18 glorious “gongs” in my head for orchestral tubular bells. It is a passionate hope that someday in a video presentation, a masterful cultural bridge of the two diverse countries will be crafted. Better yet, what an experience it would be to have a legitimate gong consort perform live with Pacific Brass!The year of our visit, as we were coached many times by the Embassy’s Attaché, was a milestone landmark between the two nations, worthy of praise and celebration: the ten-year anniversary of the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership, signed by Presidents Obama and Sang in July 2013. This bilateral relationship has bridged both nations’ commitment to economic engagement, cultural exchange, tourism, education, and human rights. This composition is in celebration of this Comprehensive Partnership and a gift to the wonderful people of Vietnam. May this music contribute to a continuing growth of positive relations bridging the two nations.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458413). Basin Street sits on the edge of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. The Duke of Alva's entry into Brussels from The Pacification of Ghent, duration : 2 min music : Peter Benoit arr. : Marc Goris Peter Benoit composed music based on the historical drama with the title 'De Pacificatie van Gent' by Emiel Van Goethem. Because of the combination of drama and music he defined the piece as a lyrical drama. He completed The Pacification of Ghent on 11 July 1876, the world premiere happening on 3 September at the Ghent Municipal Theatre. On 8 November 1576 a treaty was proclaimed from the balcony of the city hall in Ghent between the different regions of the southern and the northern Netherlands. This Pacification of Ghent occurred after the revolt against the Spanish occupation of Philip the Second and was the great ideal of William of Orange: he was striving for unity in the seventeen provinces in the Netherlands as well as for freedom of religion. Furthermore the treaty stipulated that the Spanish troops were to be removed from the Netherlands. Although this treaty was observed for only three years, the Pacification was embellished with a mythical aura in the Flanders of the 19th century. King Philip II sent the Duke of Alva to Brussels on 22 August 1567, at the head of a powerful army. On arrival, Alva replaced Margaret of Parma, the sister of the Spanish king, as head of the civil jurisdiction. He decided that the local nobility was in open rebellion against the king and supported the new Protestant teachings, heresy in his view. A few days later, on 5 September 1567, Alva established the Council of Troubles, popularly known in the Netherlands as the Court of Blood, to prosecute those responsible for the riots of 1566, especially those who were deemed heretics. Alba also targeted the local Catholic nobility, who favoured dialogue and opposed outside intervention. Two of the three heads of the Flemish nobility, the Count of Egmont, a Catholic General for Philip II, who had led the cavalry that defeated the French at the Battle of San Quentin, and Philip de Montmorency, Count of Horn, were arrested. The court sentenced both counts to death. The Major of Antwerpen, Anthony van Stralen, Lord of Merksem and Jan van Casembroot were other famous victims of the bloody repression, along with a large group of other heretics. The condemned persons were executed on 5 June 1568 in the Town Hall Square in Brussels. Alva had little confidence in Flemish justice, which he perceived as sympathetic to the defendants, and witnessed the executions in person.

The video clips used for this video were taken at the Omaha Zoo on 26 Nov 2021 and 13 Jul 2022, and eventually, this serene music was composed to beautifully highlight the exquisite loveliness of these enigmatic (albeit perilous) creatures. This work unexpectedly became the most popular original Thrower composition on YouTube. The sheet music was originally intended to be published in a collection of other similar short compositions written to underscore memorable scenes and amusements from my life. Between performing sets of Christmas carols at a mall on the outskirts of Tokyo, I purchased a stunning 1000-piece puzzle of Mount Fuji as a Christmas gift for my wife. She is fond of puzzles. When I started putting together time lapse videos with brass quintet music, the fast-motion working of a puzzle sounded intriguing. We had just completed a different 1000-piece puzzle, so I estimated that the completed video would be less than a minute. The camera and table were set up for the filming, and then I opened the box. The tiny quarter-inch puzzle pieces shocked me! I even let out a gasp. However, everything was set up, and I was determined to get the time lapse footage. The process took a great portion of three days. Were it not for the end goal of a time lapse video, I think we would have abandoned the cursed puzzle long before completion. We got it done on 2 Jan 2024 though, and several days later I revived a cute little ricky-ticky piece in the works, gave it a title, and completed it in two days. One key moment is a musical laugh, as if the menacingly challenging puzzle were mocking us as we struggled so long to complete it. Duration: 3:00.

About the Taiwan Fantasia, van Deursen states: After having lived in Taipei for a number of years, I learned many of the local folk and popular songs. Some of the melodies are exceptionally beautiful, and my idea was to somehow combine all the elements that have made up my musical experiences over these years - Chinese melodies, western orchestral music and jazz; I wanted to see if these songs could survive with a totally different harmonic structure and concept. My original goal was to write a simple arrangement of the two songs, but quickly I discovered more melodies building upon the original ones and thus the Variations were born. Composed in 1995, this work of about 10 minutes in length is in one continuous movement, but is divided into seven short sections of contrasting moods including two cadenzas, for Trumpet and Trombone. The music is appropriate for advanced performers. Parts in C and B-flat are supplied for the Trumpets. A recording of Taiwan Fantasia can be purchased on iTunes from the album by the Yeh Shu Han Brass Quintet.

Up Where We Belong is a song written by Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Will Jennings that was recorded by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes for the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman. Warnes was recommended to sing a song from the film because of her previous soundtrack successes, and she had the idea for the song to be a duet that she would perform with Cocker. Jennings selected various sections of the score by Nitzsche and Sainte-Marie in creating the structure of the song and added lyrics about the struggles of life and love and the obstacles in the way that we attempt to dodge. It was released in July of that year to coincide with the release of the film.The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and topped the charts in several other countries. Rounding out the “American Trails” with the fifth composition in the collection, “Trail of Tears” is in reference to the heart-wrenching dark history of over 60,000 American Indians being expelled from their lands. During the period between 1830 and 1850, natives from five tribes were forcibly displaced from their homelands in what later became known as the American Deep South. These “Five Civilized Tribes” included the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, and Seminole nations. Under the leadership of President Andrew Jackson, Congress passed the “Indian Removal Act” in 1830 which revoked all land ownership from all Native Americans in the Southeast. Although Jackson was not the originator of the movement to remove the Indians, it was his top legislative priority upon taking office. In his mind, they were a primary obstacle for the fulfillment of the Manifest Destiny and American national success. There were many opponents to the violent legislation, such as David Crockett of Tennessee and Catherine Beecher.The most brutal year of the Trail of Tears occurred in 1838 among the Cherokee who had resisted the Treaty of New Echota of 1836 through petitions and pleas to the US government. Despite their efforts, the expulsive treaty was ratified and the resistant Cherokee were compelled by militia to vacate all lands east of the Mississippi River. The heaviest death tolls occurred in the summer and winter months of 1838 after the deadline to depart had passed in May. Disease, exposure, starvation, and harassment by frontiersman compounded the physical exertion of the “death marches” that killed many.This composition extensively borrows the four-note motif from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. That symphony was composed in the early 1800s in Europe at the same time as the growth of the anti-Indian sentiment across the American frontier. Rather than primary thematic material, “Trail of Tears” uses the motif as a morose, plodding accompanimental pattern that adds depth of sorrow to the musical homage.

In 1949, the Soviet occupation zone of Allied-occupied Germany became a socialist state under the name of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). For the nascent state's national anthem, the poet Johannes Becher, who later became the East German Minister of Culture, wrote the lyrics. Two musicians, Ottmar Gerster and Hanns Eisler, proposed music to Becher's lyrics, and Eisler's version was selected. History Written in 1949, the East German national anthem reflects the early stages of German separation, in which continuing progress towards reunification of the occupation zones was seen by most Germans as appropriate and natural. Consequently, Becher's lyrics develop several connotations of unity and combine them with fatherland (einig Vaterland), meaning Germany as a whole. However, this concept soon would not conform to an increasingly icy Cold War context, especially after the Berlin Wall had been erected in 1961 by the East German government.[1] In September 1973, East and West Germany were admitted to the United Nations simultaneously, following talks between the two governments that conferred a degree of mutual recognition. The term Germany was later removed from the East German constitution, and only the national anthem's tune was played on official occasions. No new lyrics were ever written to replace Becher's, which continued to be used unofficially, especially after die Wende in late 1989: once it became clear that the countries were actually moving towards reunification, East German television Deutscher Fernsehfunk reinstated the work and signed off every night with a joyous symphonic rendition of the vocal arrangement, with accompanying picturesque footage of East Germany's main tourist attractions. Auferstanden aus Ruinen ceased to be a national anthem when the German Democratic Republic dissolved and its states joined the Federal Republic of Germany as a result of German reunification in 1990. Deutschlandlied, composed in 1841, became the national anthem of a united Germany again. East German Premier Lothar de Maizière had proposed that Becher's lyrics be added to the united German national anthem, but this was rejected by his West German counterpart, chancellor Helmut Kohl. At the end of its last broadcast on 2 October 1990, the East German international radio broadcaster Radio Berlin International signed off with a vocal version of the East German national anthem. In November 1995, Auferstanden aus Ruinen was played again when German President Roman Herzog visited Brazil. This was the first event at which the anthem had been played since the German reunification.

With other birds, it lives at Helia's bar where they are treated with great affection. The feeling of preservation combined with freedom was the inspiration for the composition of this piece that uses two genres as a base, the ijexá and the maxixe. The rhythmic characteristics of each of these genres were distributed among the instruments and guided by a cheerful melody. An opportunity to expand the repertoire of his quintet and immerse himself in the rhythm and fusion of these two genres. Weinberger was born the son of a goldsmith in Lipto St. Miklo in Hungary but his family moved to Vienna in 1865. In 1885 Josef Weinberger and Carl Hofbauer started an art and music store in Vienna, but the partnership ended when both partners set up on their own, Weinberger in 1890 and Hofbauer in 1892. Weinberger saw the potential, in publishing and licensing, of the craze for operetta, and made a connection with Johann Strauss II. Within a few years all the great operetta composers were his clients: Strauss, Millöcker, Zeller, Kálmán, Oscar Straus, Stolz, and Fall. He even provided licensing services for the last great Viennese operetta composer, Franz Lehár, who from the 1920s published through his own company, Glocken-Verlag.The firm expanded quickly, opening branches in Paris (1885) and Leipzig (1889) where they worked with Friedrich Hofmeister. One of the most remarkable aspects of the developing Weinberger catalogue was the commitment to Czech music, and from April 1893 to August 1894 the Hofmeister entries were almost all by Smetana (various publications of Dalibor and HubiÄka as well as overtures) and Vilém Blodek (V studni); later additions included Tajemstvi (1895) and LibuÅ¡e (1897). Otherwise most of the repertoire was of popular music for various combinations, not least military bands, with von Suppé figuring prominently from 1895 onwards.The mid 1890s also saw significant enlargements of the Weinberger catalogue through the acquisition of other publisher's lists: in 1894 the ancient firm of Artaria, then in 1895 items from the Kratochwill catalogue and over 1,500 works from the Kratz catalogue of theatrical works. This latter acquisition included a number of works with international performing rights, which encouraged Weinberger to open a Parisian branch in 1896, but it also reflected a shift in Weinberger's publishing interests towards theatrical music generally. Another major step in that direction was taken in 1897, when the entire theatrical catalogue of Gustav Lewy – which included the stage works of Johann Strauss the younger and Millöcker – were taken over (with the Strauss performing rights following in 1899).Weinberger was active in three other fields apart from popular music. Firstly, he was Gustav Mahler's third publisher, issuing the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen in 1897, and distributing Symphonies nos 1-3, Das klagende Lied and Lieder aus des Knaben Wunderhorn (1900) on behalf of the owner of the publishing rights, the Erste Wiener Zeitungsgesellschaft. Secondly, he took an active part in setting up a trade association, AKM (Gesellschaft der Autoren, Komponisten und Musikverleger or society of authors, composers and publishers) to collect the performance fees due for non-theatrical musical works, in 1897. Finally, Weinberger was the driving force behind the founding of Universal Edition in Vienna in 1901, and not only served as its managing director until 1906 (when he was replaced by Arthur Fadüm), but also provided the new company with space in his own firm's premises until 1908.This orchestration is for a brass quintet.
