What is the Crying at Jordan? is an Advent hymn with text written in the 1950s by Carol Christopher Drake, a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Berkeley, California. Although the text (which is copyrighted by the author and appears by permission in The Hymnal 1982 of the Episcopal Church) cannot be reproduced here, it speaks of the longing, introspection, and expectation of a world lost in sin for the Incarnation of the Word of God and the dawn of salvation. The traditional Irish tune on which this arrangement is based came from a Gaelic collection, Dánta Dé (Poems of God, or Verses About God - Dublin 1928). The tune had no name in Dánta Dé, and was later named ST. This easy arrangement for brass quintet has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.

The first places the melody in the horn, mimicking the early American proclivity for placing the melody in the tenor voice and a counter line in the soprano voice. The second iteration is a multi-part canon between the trumpets, the low brass, and the horn. The final recapitulation restates the carol, this time with the melody in the first trumpet to soar above the other parts. The iterations can be played individually or together.

Wilt Thou Forgive That Sin? are the opening words to the poem, A Hymn to God the Father, written by the English poet, priest, and scholar John Donne (1572-1631). A theologically rich and poetically masterful text, it presents an appeal to God, in which Donne asks Wilt thou forgive? the original sin into whch man is born (stanza 1) and the personal sins of the individual (stanza 2), and in which he acknowledges his own fear of death and his hope of salvation through God's Son, Jesus Christ (stanza 3). Donne commissioned a tune to accompany the hymn from the English early baroque composer John Hilton (1599-1657), of which Donne's friend and biographer Izaak Walton said, he caused it to be set to a most grave and solemn tune, and to be often sung to the organ by the Choristers of St. Paul’s Church, in his own hearing.... The Coventry Carol text is based on the Gospel of Matthew (2:16–18) and deals with the Massacre of the Innocents in which Herod the Great, king of Judea, orders the execution of all male children who are two years old and under in the vicinity of Bethlehem.The music tends to use a lot of Picardy Third (the practice of raising the third of a chord at the end of a cadence, and changing the quality of a minor chord to a major chord). I took the Picardy Third thing one step further and modulated to the relative major (Cmaj from Amin), and fanfared on a bright, C major chord -indicating Christ the Savior's successful conquest despite all odds. Then quickly modulate once again to C minor (C major's parallel minor, and up a minor third where the piece started), to bring back the somber feeling the piece is supposed to have.
