In 1992 the Ukrainian Parliament chose as the national anthem music composed in 1863 by Mykhailo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Catholic priest. Verbytsky originally wrote the score as a solo song and later for orchestra to accompany a patriotic poem written in 1862 by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer in the Kyiv region. In his poem Shche Ne Vmerla Ukrayina (which means Ukraine is not yet dead), Chubynsky expressed the mixture of hope and desperation felt by Ukrainians over their continuous struggle to rule their own land. Widely sung around the country as the Hymn to Ukraine, both the melody and lyrics were similar to those of Polish and Serbian anthems. In 1917 it became the anthem of the short-lived Ukrainian National Republic, but during the Soviet era it was replaced. Over time there were various changes and additions to Chubynsky's original words, resulting in several slightly differing versions of the Hymn to Ukraine. Following independence in 1991, many Ukrainians were disatisfied with the pessimistic tone, so the Ukrainian government made the Verbytsky score official but hesitated to approve the Chubynsky's lyrics. A comission sponsored contests for replacement lyrics, but none were decided on. Agreement finally came in 2003, when the Parliament passed and the President signed an act recognizing a slight change to the version of Chubynsky's lyrics that were usually sung. Hundreds of marches have served their purposes through the many decades of military tradition in the United States of America. This 3.5-minute march was composed for the occasion of the change of command of the 55th Wing—“The Fightin’ 55thâ€â€”under Air Combat Command, located at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. The ceremony took place on June 14, 2019, which was also Flag Day. The new march served as a grateful tribute to the outgoing Commander, Colonel Michael H. Manion, and a welcoming gesture to the new Commander, Colonel Gavin P. Marks. Printed copies of the score were presented to the Commanders before the ceremony, and the march was premiered as the final pre-ceremony musical selection. The opening motifs are strongly reminiscent of the introductory measures of the “Air Force Song†most commonly played by Air Force brass quintets. Keeping in tradition with the form of most marches, the “Trio†section presents new material in a new key (down a fifth), with a contrastingly quiet dynamic. The opening motif of the Trio strain is a mutation, or a paraphrase, of “Anchors Aweighâ€, emphasizing the joint-force nature of the 55th Wing. The melody is repeated with a louder dynamic and a countermelody in the horn, and then is repeated once more with increased excitement in the accompaniment, variety of dynamics, and even a temporary key shift. Straying from the form most used by the “March Kingâ€, John Philip Sousa, Dr. Thrower omitted a fourth or final strain, and instead he modulated the key back to the original B-flat major and brought back the melodic content from the first strain. This form predates Sousa, and was more commonly used in Europe and early America. It smacks of “sonata formâ€, and even the modern formal designation of “recapitulating march†alludes to sonata form. The final recapitulating strain repeats with an obbligato soaring above it in the first trumpet part, now on piccolo trumpet. The march ends with a short coda that brings back the opening motivic allusion to the Air Force Song. Due to the selected formal structure, this march, “The Fightin’ 55thâ€, is much more unified than most typical marches. The very nature of military marches (including America’s beloved “Stars and Stripes Foreverâ€) displays four or even five completely unrelated melodies, or strains, throughout. The incorporation of thematic structure similar to that found in sonata form indeed makes “The Fightin’ 55th†an appropriate and even artistic concert march.

Singin' in the Rain is a 1952 American musical romantic comedy film directed and choreographed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, starring Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds and featuring Jean Hagen, Millard Mitchell and Cyd Charisse. It offers a lighthearted depiction of Hollywood in the late 1920s, with the three stars portraying performers caught up in the transition from silent films to talkies.The film was only a modest hit when it was first released. I wanted to challenge myself with these various styles while infusing the quirkiness of Thomas into the heart of the piece.I. HipThis summer I was able to pass through New York City on my way to a graduate school audition. On the train ride there I ended up next to a kid who was grooving to music I could hear snippets of through his headphones. This movement reflects characteristics of the sounds I heard on my way into the city.II. One for the lovebirds…It’s time to cuddle up next to your partner and take a trip down memory lane. This movement is an ode to the slow songs one may have experienced from a dance in the 1950’s.III. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. From the Shadow's Edge was commissioned by horn player in the US Air Force Bands, SSgt Alena Zidlicky, to honor her grandmother Beluse Urlich Zidlicky (Babi), who escaped the oppressive Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during WWII. For brass quintet and percussion, the horn is featured. The music of this composition begins in aural darkness, as if immersed in an inescapable shadow. The tense harmonies and contrapuntal motions of the brass are accompanied by two heartbeat motifs, in the tuba and bass drum, conjuring sentiments of fear and uncertainty. Emotions swell as the solo horn enters with contrasting triplet rhythms that struggle against the complex mixture of duple strains throughout the other parts. This dark introduction serves as a prelude to the above storyline, which transitions quickly (and trepidatiously) out of the shadow. From rehearsal letter B through the remainder of the piece, hope permeates in the brightness, once escaped from the shadow’s ominous edge. The complex nature of the thematic overlapping and polyphonic texture of the quintet as a whole provide feelings of unrest, anticipation, hope, and yes, heroism. Nothing exudes heroism more than a soaring solo horn! This composition celebrates triumph over evil, whether during life or in death, and those who press on with a brightness of hope even in the darkest shadows that life can cast, as exemplified in the life of Beluse Ulrich Zidlicky.

Higher Ground (I'm pressing on the upward way) is a 19th-century American gospel song with lyrics by Johnson Oatman, Jr. (1856-1922) and music by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856-1932).Both Oatman and Gabriel were prolific writers. Oatman, an ordained Methodist Episcopal minister employed primarily in retail and insurance work, is said to have written over 5,000 hymns and songs in the latter 30-some years of his life.  Although not a talented singer nor recognized as an outstanding preacher, he was acknowledged to have ministered to countless souls through the words of his hymns and songs.Gabriel, a Methodist Episcopal church music director and editor of gospel song books, anthem collections, music instruction manuals, and more, is said to have written between seven and eight thousand texts and/or tunes under his own name and several pseudonyms. In addition to the music for Higher Ground, he composed the music for such well-known gospel songs as His Eye is on the Sparrow and Will the Circle Be Unbroken? The opening line of Oatman’s text (I'm pressing on the upward way) draws especially from Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.†Other sources include passages from the prophets Isaiah and Micah and the Psalms of Ascent (120-134). Gabriel's music cleverly evokes the upward vision of the text with an ascending arpeggio spanning an octave on the first words of the refrain (Lord, lift me up) and the matching of the highest notes of the tune to the words a higher plane.This arrangement for brass quintet expands the meter of the tune from 3/4 to 4/4 to allow for some countermelodic call-and-response by various voices in the ensemble. Special interest may be directed to the tuba part, which is incredibly active throughout. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1147711). “The Huron Carol†is the popular name for a Christmas song written in the language of the Wendat, an indigenous people of Canada — their name meaning “people of the island†or “dwellers on a peninsula†— nicknamed “Huron†(“boar's headâ€) by French explorers and traders due to the bristly hairstyle of Wendat men.The song began as a tool for teaching and converting the Wendat to Christianity, and it was likely written in the early 1640s by the French Jesuit missionary, Jean de Brébeuf. In Wendat, the song is titled “Jesous Ahatonnia,†which means “Jesus is Born.†The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song, “Une Jeune Pucelle†(“A Young Maidâ€). Jean de Brébeuf’s lyrics present the Nativity story using images and ideas that would have been familiar to the Wendat. Angels are “spirits†and “sky peopleâ€; the Magi (wise men) are “elders,†and as an act of reverence they oil Jesus’ scalp, a practice Wendat people would have recognized. Today, “The Huron Carol's†most well-known lyrics, beginning “'Twas in the moon of winter-time,†were written by Canadian poet Jesse Middleton and published in 1927 in a small illustrated book titled “The First Canadian Christmas Carol.â€Middleton’s text is not a translation, but a complete rewriting of “Jesous Ahatonnia†for English speakers, and bears almost no relation to the original Wendat text. The year 2022 marked a milestone for the United States Air Force, as the world’s greatest airpower celebrated 75 years of air and space dominance. Omaha’s classical radio station was also celebrating a milestone year with its 50th anniversary. The resulting composition, cleverly titled “On the Air,†was written to observe both momentous anniversaries. The introduction plays on a cleverly adapted four-bar rhythmic motif that repeats, each time growing in intensity, conjuring images of a radio newsroom about to air breaking news. This opening rhythm is derived from Morse code letters K, V, N, & O (__ . __ | . . . __ | __ . | __ __ __), which is Omaha’s classical radio station. The main melodic theme begins after the intense introduction, stemming from the KVNO motif, and exudes energy worthy of the greatest of celebrations, replete with trumpets punctuating the strains with fanfare-like figures. After the KVNO transition to an exciting new key, the theme occurs a second time in the trumpets before simmering down to the second theme in a slower tempo, intended to be retrospective of the last 75 and 50 years of the two celebrating entities. In homage to the conflicts, sacrifices, and losses during 75 years of Air Force history, this melancholy melody in the horn repeats in octaves with horn and tuba, contrasting with the opening jubilation. However, without starkly “snapping back†to a celebratory mood, the original theme gently makes its reentry in the form of a mellow waltz with duetting trumpets, as a hopeful look to the future. The second iteration of the waltz brings back hints of the Morse code letters in the introduction, as underlying accompaniment to build energy and drive. It pivots fully with the KVNO introductory motif that changes keys while exploding with the recapitulation of the original full theme, intensifying the celebratory mood for the present festivities. The waltz version of the theme comes back, fragmented, hinting toward a fugato treatment. The non-fugal fragmentation is laced with virtuosically ornamented accompanimental lines reminiscent of a British-style brass band, and quickly settles into a full climactic presentation of the waltz iteration. The work ends full circle, with repeated KVNO rhythmic statements, in grand fashion for a firework finale.

The Man Behind the Gun was composed in 1899, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 57.Section titles (such as “First Strain†and “Trioâ€) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.

It would win that year's Oscar for best original song. Since then, it has been sung by just about everyone on the planet. One notably different version, from which I've borrowed shamelessly for this arrangement, is the one from the late Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. This one is scored for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC and tuba. It would be nominated for an Oscar for best original song, which subsequent history would indicate it should have won. The honor went to It Goes Like It Goes from the soundtrack of Norma Rae, which hasn't been heard since. The Rainbow Connection, meanwhile, has been covered by just about every singer and group in the universe, just short of the metal rockers. This arrangement is a challenge, although the parts are not technically difficult. I've used stairstep constructions throughout, so a quintet has to be tight and precise to maintain a steady tempo.
