From the Music of Black Composers Series at Charles Decker Music Press is the “The Charleston†which debuted in James P. Johnson’s Broadway 1923 show “Runnin’ Wild†to become the wildly popular and unofficial anthem of the Roaring 20’s.  An important jazz pianist and composer, Johnson was a major influence on Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, and Fats Waller.  Arranged for a brass quintet of two B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, horn in F with a substitute flugelhorn part, trombone or euphonium and tuba, the arrangement uses the original 1923 piano edition and retains the style of the day. Its new owners in 1889 wanted to celebrate with a song, so they hired John Philip Sousa, then director of the U.S. Marine Corps Band (The President's Own) to write one for them. The result was The Washington Post March, which became wildly popular (mostly a dance tune to accompany the two-step) in the U.S. and in Europe. It also led to his coronation as The March King. A British journalist so anointed him on the strength of this march (although the reporter probably made him The American March King, since Kenneth J. Alford (Colonel Bogey, etc.) was already The March King in Great Britain. Washington Post debuted in a ceremony on the grounds of the Smithsonian Institution, with President Benjamin Harrison among the throng of attendees.

These five short, elegant fanfares by former students of Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov were composed for the 1890 concert celebrating his 20 years as professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. Originally scored for an orchestral brass section, the fanfares retain their brilliance as a brass quintet and parts can be doubled to intensify the musical impact. Arranged for a brass quintet of two B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, horn in F with alternate substitute parts for horn (B-flat trumpet, treble and bass clef baritone), trombone with a substitute treble clef baritone for trombone part and tuba. This is a very accessible work for student ensembles and less experienced players that will impress audiences and add festive excitement to concerts or ceremonies.
