Note: To add authenticity, the solo part has been written as flutter/double tongue in places, this will of course depend on the ability of the performer and their preferred style. Kum ba yah (Come by here) is an African American spiritual song of disputed origin, but known to be sung in the Gullah culture of the islands off South Carolina and Georgia, with ties to enslaved Central Africans. The song is thought to have spread from the islands to other Southern states and the North, as well as other places in the world. The first known recording, of someone known only as H. Wylie, who sang in the Gullah dialect, was recorded by folklorist Robert Winslow Gordon in 1926. It later became a standard campfire song in Scouting and summer camps and enjoyed broader popularity during the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s.The song was originally an appeal to God to come and help those in need. In American politics, the song would later become part of a phrase (sing Kumbaya) denoting unrealistic, excessively optimistic compromises.Here is a brilliant arrangement by S Smith-Masters orchestrated for a brass quintet and functional percussion.

The original version was recorded by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Cover versions of the song have been recorded by dozens of artists worldwide.Julius Wechter was a percussionist in Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, most notably on marimba. Spanish Flea was one of several songs he wrote for the group. It was released as an instrumental on the B-side to the single What Now My Love from their 1965 album Going Places. The album was a No. 1 hit in the U.S., and the single peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Spanish Flea featured Alpert's trumpet over a Latin rhythm backing.The original version was recorded on August 13, 1965 at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Two other songs were recorded during that session, those being And I Love Her and More And More Amor. Early American composer William Billings utilizes the same Christmas text Methinks I hear a Heavenly Host for both his tunes Shiloh and Boston. Shiloh, is a lively tune, alternating between 4/4 time for the verse and 3/2 time for the chorus. This arrangement for brass quintet presents three iterations. The first places the melody in the horn, mimicking the early American proclivity for placing the melody in the tenor voice and a counter line in the soprano voice. The second iteration is a multi-part canon between the trumpets, the low brass, and the horn. The final recapitulation restates the carol, this time with the melody in the first trumpet to soar above the other parts. The iterations can be played individually or together.

One of the best-known scenes from the work is Pas de Deux which comes near the end of the ballet. This version for brass quintet places muted trumpets, horn, and trombone in the role of the plucked strings and harps, while the tuba plays the melody followed by an unmuted trombone. Players should experiment with both straight mutes and cup mutes. Published by WINDCREST (A0.945051). This is one of the most well-known folk songs from the 19th Century. The performance duration of this selection is about five minutes at the suggested tempo. This selection will find welcome performance opportunities whenever a lighter-themed selection of Americana music is desired. While light-themed in nature, this arrangement places musical challenges upon the performers, all of whom should be medium advanced in their performance skills. This arrangement is written alla breve and begins in the key of F Major (concert), but modulates to G Major (concert) and eventually concludes in Ab Major (concert). The Trumpet I part ascends scale-wise to written Eb above high C at the end of a run at one point. The French Horn has a couple of instances of a written high G, A, and Bb above the staff. Otherwise, ranges are reasonable.The arrangement has multiple musical references to the American West. To this arranger the melody suggested a reference to fiddle tunes and barn dances, an important social and cultural past-time of the era. It seemed like a logical direction to steer this arrangement.

This arrangement features horn on the primary melody, and generally places the work in the lower and darker registers of the other instruments. At the climax the first trumpet climbs out of the darkness and into the bright upper register. As the theme is recalled/remembered at the end, trumpet with harmon mute lends a nostalgic feeling.  Combined with my arrangement of General Lavine and Heather, this would make a great recital set of Debussy's music.  Buy all three Debussy Preludes as a set (including Heather, The Girl With The Flaxen Hair, and General Lavine) and save over 14%.
