Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1080498). A straightforward arrangement of the American national anthem, suitable for patriotic recitals and civic/community events. Includes parts in both 8.5x11-inch page format and 6.75x5.5-inch march folio (flip folder) size. The national anthem of the United States of America, “The Star-Spangled Banner†is a setting of the poem, “Defence of Fort M’Henry†by Francis Scott Key (1779-1843) to the music of “The Anacreontic Song†by the British composer and musicologist John Stafford Smith (1750-1836). Key wrote his poem on September 14, 1814 while witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812, inspired by the large American flag (“star-spangled bannerâ€) flying triumphantly above the fort during the American victory. Smith’s tune, already well-known, became the vehicle for what was soon to be a popular American patriotic song. “The Star-Spangled Banner†was recognized for official use by the United States Navy in 1889, and by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931. ©Copyright 2012 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music. A rare revisit to Sousa’s medley march days, this march features Stephen Foster’s Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming and Ethelbert Nevin’s Narcissus. This unpublished march could have been called “Homage to Nevin and Fosterâ€, “Homage to Pittsburghâ€, or “The Belle of Pittsburghâ€.It is one of Sousa’s more unusual works, but highly inventive. His combination of themes is well executed and builds throughout to a triumphant conclusion. A quite difficult one to arrange!This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Pride of Pittsburgh was composed in 1901, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 60.

Set to a traditional 16th-17th century Irish tune, the Irish Carol (Christmas Day is Come) is attributed to Luke Wadding (1558-1657), a Franciscan friar and historian born in Ireland who did much to strengthen the Catholic Church in Ireland and raise its profile in Rome. Although he was a prolific writer who published his own Small Garland of Pious and Godly Songs (1684), the so-called Irish Carol appeared in A New Garland Containing Songs for Christmas by William Devereux (1696-1771) as The Second Carol for Christmas Day. It is likely that Devereux, not Wadding, was the author of the text, which begins:Christmas Day is come; Let us prepare for mirth,Which fills the heav'ns and earth at His amazing birth.Through both thy joyous angels in strife and hurry fly,With glory and hosannas, Holy, Holy they cry.In Heav'n the church triumphant adores with all her choirs,The militant on earth with humble faith admires.Although more than one tune has been associated with Christmas Day is Come, the tune that is the basis for this arrangement is the most commonly sung today. ©Copyright 2021 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic. Ideal as a prelude or postlude to Easter Sunday and Eastertide services of worship, “Easter Anthem†originated as a choral work by William Billings (1746-1800) with text excerpted from Night Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality, an extensive blank-verse poem by the English poet Edward Young (1683-1765) published in nine parts (or “nightsâ€) from 1742 to 1745.Born in Boston, Billings was self-taught in music — a tanner by trade — and he was renowned as a singing master and proponent of the singing-school tradition of American folk culture. Considered the ï¬rst native-born American composer, his works include hymns, anthems, psalms, and fuging tunes.“Easter Anthem†is exemplary of his compositional style, which is noted for rhythmic vitality and straightforward harmonies. Exuberantly glorious, it celebrates the resurrection of Christ and the salvation of the world from its opening acclamation, “The Lord is risen indeed! Hallelujah!†to its closing declaration, Thine all the glory, man’s the endless bliss!The Lord is risen indeed! Hallelujah!Now is Christ risen from the dead,And become the ï¬rst fruit of them that slept.Hallelujah!And did he rise?Hear, O ye nations! Hear it, O ye dead!He rose!
