Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1136166). “Joy to the World†is, perhaps, the most widely performed Christmas carol, having appeared in nearly 1800 different hymnals since its initial publication, according to hymnary.org.The text was written by the prolific English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748) as a paraphrase of Psalm 98 and published in his Psalms of David Imitated (1719) under the heading “The Messiah's Coming and Kingdom.†The paraphrase is a Christological interpretation of the psalm — i.e., an understanding of a passage of Old Testament scripture as pointing to the Christ of the New Testament.As hymn texts and tunes were often printed separately, Watts indicated that “Joy to the World†should be sung to any Common Meter (CM) tune — a poetic meter consisting of four lines that alternate between iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter, with each foot consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. Consider the CM tunes, “Amazing Grace†and “O Little Town of Bethlehem,†for example — both very different from the tune commonly associated with Watts’ text today.That tune was written, or at least arranged, by the American hymn-writer and music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) and published in The National Psalmist (Boston, 1848). Mason had published three earlier arrangements of the tune he named “ANTIOCH,†the first in 1836 and attributed as being “from Handel.†Although Mason was a great admirer and student of Handel's music, and though the first four notes of Mason's “ANTIOCH†are the same as the first four in the chorus “Lift up your heads†from Handel's Messiah, the similarity ends there.This arrangement for brass quintet features a “bell-toneâ€-like fanfare in the introduction, interlude, and ending; textural contrasts between high and low brass; and tasteful re-harmonizations of the tune in the middle and concluding verses.©Copyright 2022 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Michael Praetorius’ setting of the sixteenth-century carol Psallite, unigenito made the carol so famous that later composers were enticed to use the carol as the basis for new compositions. One such composer was Franz Liszt, who used it to begin a set of Christmas piano works he composed for his granddaughter, Daniela. She was the first person to hear the work, when Liszt played it for her on Christmas Day, 1881, in her hotel room in Rome. Written in a style typical of the composer’s autumnal works, the movement exploits the melody’s initial bell motto in an elevated style. This arrangement enhances that style by transcribing it for organ (or piano) and brass quintet.

One of the United Kingdom’s most popular hymns, ‘Be Thou My Vision’ is a traditional Christian hymn with Irish origins. The text is based on a Middle Irish poem most attributed to Dallán Forgaill, an early Christian Irish poet born in 530AD. Since the early 20th century, the text has been sung to an Irish folk tune, known in church hymnals as ‘Slane’. Today, ‘Be Thou My Vision’ is often heard at both weddings and funerals, as well as Sunday church services across the United Kingdom. Originally composed for organ, it has been arranged for Brass Quartet, Brass Quintet, or Brass Choir with optional keyboard. Two harmonizations of the isometric version of the hymn are also provided. The first is a standard harmonization found in many hymnals. The second is based on the concluding Chorale of Cantata 80 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Including the music of both Bach and Pachelbel, this arrangement serves as an excellent introduction to the music of the Baroque era and the contributions of great Lutheran composers. It also provides opportunities to discuss the time of the Reformation. For worship the arrangement can be played alone or it can be used to accompany congregational singing. This arrangement for brass quintet, is based on a tune that is often used for the lyrics, written by the German composer, Conrad Kocher, in 1836. The melody was modified by William Chatterton Dix in 1859, for a hymn titled As With Gladness Men Of Old, hence the tune is often identified in hymnals as DIX. Though there are several other hymn tunes that can be used with the text, this arrangement also uses a modern setting by Donnalynn Grunewald (2013) in triple meter. Folliott S. Pierpoint was an English teacher and poet. The words to For the Beauty of the Earth were written in 1864. The marriage of the text with the melody by Kocher/Dix is credited to an English organist, William H. Monk in 1861. The popularity of the hymn is due partly to the aptness of the text to Thanksgiving celebrations, thus assuring in annual performance. Not only do the words express thanks for the world in which we live, but it also includes thanks for family and friends, brother, sister, parent, child. Friends on earth and friends above. Also worthy of note is the universality of the sentiment, expressed in a way that can be embraced by people of any religion. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. First published in 1850, At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing was one of four of Campbell's hymn texts to be included in Hymns Ancient & Modern (1861), the first standardized and popular hymnal of the Anglican Church.The tune accompanying the text, known as SALZBURG, is attributed to the German composer Jakob Hintze (1622-1702). Its harmonization has long been attributed to J.S. Bach and numbered among his works as BWV 262.
