Mr. Trombonology by African American composer, trombonist, bandleader and publisher Nathaniel Cleophas Shorty Davis was written in 1917 as a Trombone solo in the American genre of Ragtime featuring the trombone's patented glissando as the hook. These solos were also called smears or jazzes. Mr. Trombonology is one of five entertaining works from Davis' Trombone Family written between 1915 and 1921 and comes with the subtitle - A Characteristic Trombone Smear. The Son of Oh Slip It Man. This arrangement has been expertly arranged by Joshua Hauser for Brass Quintet with the Trombonist as the featured soloist and is playable by moderately advanced performers. Cherry Classics Music will be publishing the complete series of these works for Brass Quintet by Davis arranged by Mr. Hauser. Thanks to Douglas Yeo for his research and advice.

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was written and composed primarily by John Lennon and credited to Lennon–McCartney.Most of the lyrics came from a 19th-century circus poster for Pablo Fanque's Circus Royal appearance at Rochdale.One of the most musically complex songs on Sgt. Pepper, it was recorded by the Beatles on 17 February 1967 with overdubs on 20 February (organ sound effects), 28 March (harmonica, organ, guitar), 29 March (more organ effects) and 31 March.John Lennon wanted the track to have a carnival atmosphere, and told producer George Martin that he wanted to smell the sawdust on the floor. Scottish, Air and Waltz (6/8 or 3/4 time). The antiquarian William Chappell claims the tune is English on the strength of its being included in a Collection of English Songs by Dale (who published about 1780-1794) under the title Lost is my quiet. However, the collector John Glen (1891) relates a delightful story of the tune's origins involving the famous Scots poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796), who wrote to publisher George Thomson in 1794:Do you known the history of the air? It is curious enough. A good many years ago, Mr. James Miller, writer in your good own (Edinburgh), a gentleman whom, possibly, you know, was in company with our good friend Clarke; and taling of Scottish music, Miller expressed an ardent ambition to be able to compose a Scots air. Mr. Clarke, partly by way of a joke, told him to keep to the black keys of the harpsichord, and preserve some kind of rhythm, and he would infallibly compose a Scots air. Certain it is, that, in a few days, Mr. Miller produced the rudiments of an air which Mr. Clarke, with some touches and corrections, fashioned into the tune in question. Ritson, you know, has the same story of the black keys; but this account which I have just given you, Mr. Clarke informed me of several years ago.Miller's tune was first published under the title Caledonian Hunt's Delight (The) in Gow's 2nd Collection (1788), but Glen concludes that it is more likely that Lost is my quiet is a poor adaptation and nothing else. He also notes there is a tune having a supposed resemblance in Playford's Appollo's Banquet (1690) entitled Scotch Tune (A) (No. 68), but in the end he believes that neither Chappell's arguments nor facts are strong enough to deprive Mr. Miller of his claim. The Caledonian Hunt's Delight appears also in George Thomson's A Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for the Voice (Edinburgh, 1793-1797), arranged by Kozeluch. A rondo on the air was composed by Domenico Corri (1746-1825) under the title Favourite Irish Air (which, of course, it is not).

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810733). Cornet solos are an important part of the American Brass tradition. The Southern Cross is one of Clarke's most well known Cornet solos and was written in 1911, dedicated to the Australians and first recorded by the composer with Orchestra the next year  for Victor Records. During 1911, Clarke was the solo Cornetist of the Sousa Band while the band was on a world tour that included visits to South Africa, Tazmania and Australia from March through to August. Below is a photo of the Sousa band from their 1911 tour. Clarke is sitting in the front row 5th in from the right with his moustache and his Cornet on his lap. He assuredly composed this solo to perform on that tour. The Southern Cross is a constellation that is only seen from the southern hemisphere and features the five stars of the Cross from the 1901 design of the Australian flag. This 5-minute virtuosic arrangement by Geoffrey Bergler features not only the Cornet, but a bit of all the other four members of the Brass Quintet. Instrumentation is for: 2 Trumpets in B-flat (Trumpet 1 solo, Trumpet 2 also plays Piccolo) Horn, Trombone Tuba/Bass Trombone The sound track features Mr. Bergler from his student days as Cornet soloist.

The 120 Melodious Etudes of Marco Bordogni were introduced in a three-volume set in 1928 by Trombonist Joannes Rochut and have been used for almost 100 years as pedagogical tools primarily in the low brass world. Their bel canto style, using beautiful tone and precise legato is their hallmark.Bass Trombonist Nir Fishkin has artfully arranged 10 Melodious Etudes for Brass Quintet, Volume 3 which are suitable for moderately advanced performers. Mr. Fishkin's arrangements imaginatively spread the melody around between the five parts.The Trumpet parts are in B-flat and the Trombone part is in bass clef.Below are samples from three of these beautifully scored vocalises by Bordogni.

It was dedicated to Barbara Ployer.It was first published in 1930. The autograph was thought to have been lost in 1945.Mozart was Ployer's teacher, so the sub title would seem to be another musical joke about himself.Is is quite short.Check out my arrangements of other brass quintet Funereal works by Mozart.
