Thrower: In July 2018 I spent nine days in Barra Mansa, Brazil, which lies a couple hours west of Rio de Janeiro. The occasion of my visit was the second annual International Music Festival. The festival coordinator, Vantoil de Sousa, Jr. brought me there to be the resident trumpet professor for the week, and to premiere my three-movement Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra at the Closing Concert. As I speak Portuguese somewhat fluently, many of the 20 trumpet students of all levels became great friends. Throughout the week I kept mentioning that my next composition was going to be “Lembranças do Brasil†as yet another musical journal entry in my life’s soundtrack. Truly, I had a lifetime of extraordinary experiences in Brazil during that week, from the outstanding food to my humorous self-introduction to capivaras! Overall, that week was supremely memorable and definitely a highlight of my life. One morning in early November 2018, a 'feel-good' cool melody woke me up and wouldn’t leave. It developed in my mind and I was in a spectacular mood all day long. It felt like Bobby McFarrin’s 'Don’t Worry, Be Happy' or Pharrell Williams’ 'Happy,' though in a vastly different style from either. This was my happy song. Long hours flowed quickly through the next few days as I worked out the form and details of the music, which screamed for the promised title 'Lembranças do Brasil'! Happy memories of my beautiful week in Brazil, some of which are captured on the front cover collage, now have the perfect soundtrack in my musical journal. This version was tweaked from the original five flugelhorns, and lends itself very well (perhaps even better) in the brass quintet setting.

In anticipation of the passing of 50 more years, with rousing celebrations sure to be planned and executed in every state of the Union, in every form of entertainment and festivity imaginable, this rousing patriotic composition is my heartfelt contribution.The work is offered early to allow any performing quintet to acquire the music in plenty of time to work it up for concerts, recitals, ceremonies, and festivities of all kinds throughout the year.The music itself elicits a wide range of emotions and images from throughout the two and a half centuries of America’s history. In the compositional process, I certainly had my own images circulating through my mind. It is encouraged that the performers tell their own story of America as they perform. If technical means are available, a video presentation to accompany the music would be superb!America’s 250th, Op. 142, for brass quintet was started 23 Aug 2022 and completed 11 Nov 2023 on Veterans Day in Pearl Harbor, having traveled that day on a plane from Tokyo full of Japanese. When I wrote the first few distinctive notes into the computer, my ten-year-old son said that it sounded “futuristic.” Somehow that sparked memories of a novel I had started years ago, titled “Dimension Traveler,” based on dimensional theories I had developed. With that fresh inspiration in mind, the piece wrote itself with opening movie credits in mind.The form is thematically palindromic, the center point being m. 77. The beginning to rehearsal letter A mirrors K to the end; A to B is parallel to J-K; B-C = I-J; C-D = H-I; D-E = G-H; and the central thematic sections E-F = F-G. Concerning that central turning point, the thematic material shifts from the trumpets’ first statement at letter E to low brass with the trumpets taking on the pointillistic accompaniment at letter F. Of interest is the parallel of C-D and H-I wherein the motivic material, including dynamics, is quite literally reversed note for note to a climax.For aural aesthetics in performance, there is an optional cut from letter K to m. 142. Thematically, the structure remains chiastic, but taking the cut simply truncates the end for a motivic flavor rather than repeating the entire opening entrée. There is nothing wrong with purists performing the work in its entirety—it is simply a matter of taste among the performing ensemble members.Stylistically, this piece strays far from my typical compositions. Besides the pervasive echoing eighth-note motifs, the key never changes, and there is no chromaticism. Inspired in that regard by the masterpiece “Quintet” by Michael Kamen, the diatonicism often flows in planed clusters mildly influenced by the choral works of Eric Whitacre. Another deviation from my well-established compositional habits is the instrumentation including bass trombone instead of tuba. Of course the part can be played by a tubist, though the bass trombone meshes more seamlessly with the timbres of the other instruments in passing along the pervasively echoing eighth-notes.The individual brass parts appear deceptively simple, and indeed, they are not technically demanding besides a couple high notes in the trumpets. However, putting this piece together in an ensemble setting is rhythmically treacherous!The four-minute final product indeed sounds like it could be the opening to an epic movie of the same title, based on the novel-in-progress.

The single reached number 1 in the UK Singles Chart on 8 June 1967 and stayed there for six weeks. Without much promotion, it reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100. One of the anthems of the 1967 Summer of Love, it is one of the most commercially successful singles in history, having sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.Keith Reid got the title and starting point for the song at a party. He overheard someone at the party saying to a woman, You've turned a whiter shade of pale, and the phrase stuck in his mind.Here is my representation of this magical music to be performed by a brass quintet and a percussionist. I was bemused by the sentimental farewell to the unthinkably horrible weapon, the Avro Vulcan deltawing nuclear bomber, which was operated by the Royal Air Force from 1956 to 1984, which flew over my York St John University Composition and Reflection class in October, 2015 and which was retired on 28th of that month. The four-minute warning was a public alert system conceived by the British Government during the Cold War and operational between 1953 and 1992. The name derived from the approximate length of time from the moment at which a Soviet nuclear missile attack against the United Kingdom could be confirmed and the impact of those missiles on their targets. 3 minutes would have been more realistic, and that is the length of this piece. Some terms related to the Cold War easily come to mind and are spoken during the piece. I used dissonant serial technique, but people enjoyed this lively fanfare when it was performed by the Orichalc Quintet
