It is a slow piece is a South American style.Based on the poem: Lyrics: 1. My roots once clung to the earth, The wind is calm the river still. As if nothing else survives. My world is empty, am I alive? From my limbs a fruit was plucked, Within its sheath my heart was tucked. Its seeds contained my unknown future, Inside a flesh so sweet and pure. 2. Would my seeds find a place to fall? Nice fertile ground so they'd grow tall. Or would they find some barren ground. Where no love or nurture can be found? Without the fruit my limbs were bare. An old tree nearby just stood and stared. Why should it stop and help the tree Who let its fruit be taken from thee. 3. About the charmer who took the fruit? Should he help to make them grow? Instead he walked right off the land. With barely a wave of his hand. He bit the apple as he walked away. Enjoying its flesh but did not stay. No care at all for the damage he’d done He took the heart from his loved one. 4. So grow another fruit you say. And yes that would be the logical way. But some trees grow abundant fruit. Small and nice without dispute. Others instead grow one to perfection. Round and sweet, on close inspection. But once it’s gone then that is all. Then no more shall ever fall. 5. I sit here on the barren hill, The wind is calm the river still. As if nothing else survives. The world is empty no soul survives. Dedicated to Ben van den Akker.

One of the United Kingdom’s most popular hymns, ‘Be Thou My Vision’ is a traditional Christian hymn with Irish origins. The text is based on a Middle Irish poem most attributed to Dallán Forgaill, an early Christian Irish poet born in 530AD. Since the early 20th century, the text has been sung to an Irish folk tune, known in church hymnals as ‘Slane’. Today, ‘Be Thou My Vision’ is often heard at both weddings and funerals, as well as Sunday church services across the United Kingdom. It is said to be a favourite of King Charles, and a newly set version of the hymn was performed at his coronation service at Westminster Abbey.                                                                                                                                Performance Time Approx. 1:30 minutes.

Chariots of Fire is a 1981 British historical sports drama film directed by Hugh Hudson, written by Colin Welland and produced by David Puttnam. It is based on the true story of two British athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice. Ben Cross and Ian Charleson star as Abrahams and Liddell, alongside Nigel Havers, Ian Holm, John Gielgud, Lindsay Anderson, Cheryl Campbell, Alice Krige, Brad Davis and Dennis Christopher in supporting roles. Kenneth Branagh makes his debut in a minor role.Chariots of Fire was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score for Vangelis' electronic theme tune. At the 35th British Academy Film Awards, the film was nominated in 11 categories and won in three, including Best Film. It is ranked 19th in the British Film Institute's list of Top 100 British films.The film's title was inspired by the line Bring me my Chariot of fire! from the William Blake poem adapted into the British hymn and unofficial English anthem Jerusalem; the hymn is heard at the end of the film.[4] The original phrase chariot(s) of fire is from 2 Kings 2:11 and 6:17 in the Bible.Nicholas Hare's cunning arrangement of the composition inspired me to orchestrate it for a brass quintet, where mostly the tuba plays percussive effects to indicate the tension of the race. A tear-jerker in this light, to be sure! In normal performance settings, it is extremely heartwarming and packed with deep parental emotions. The trumpet parts call for flugelhorns to increase the warm nature of the composition.

Arranged brass quintet.Percy Aldridge Grainger’s arrangement of the Scottish song The Caledonian Hunt’s Delight became Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon.The river Doon flows gracefully between the Loch Doon and the Firth of Clyde in Stirlingshire, Scotland. It was inspired by Robert Burns poem, The Banks of Doon, written in 1783.The piece was originally scored in 1903 for a chorus of women’s unison voices, accompanied by men’s voices, whistlers, and harmonium or organ at will. This was one of Grainger’s earliest folk-music arrangements, and it was dedicated to his dear friend Sigurd Fornander.The setting for band was completed in 1932 (British Folk-Music Setting No. 32).Arranged standard  brass quintet of 2 tpts, hn, tbn and tba (based on the wind band arrangement).

Wilt Thou Forgive That Sin? are the opening words to the poem, A Hymn to God the Father, written by the English poet, priest, and scholar John Donne (1572-1631). A theologically rich and poetically masterful text, it presents an appeal to God, in which Donne asks Wilt thou forgive? the original sin into whch man is born (stanza 1) and the personal sins of the individual (stanza 2), and in which he acknowledges his own fear of death and his hope of salvation through God's Son, Jesus Christ (stanza 3). Donne commissioned a tune to accompany the hymn from the English early baroque composer John Hilton (1599-1657), of which Donne's friend and biographer Izaak Walton said, he caused it to be set to a most grave and solemn tune, and to be often sung to the organ by the Choristers of St. Paul’s Church, in his own hearing.... Based on a poem by Friedrich Rückert it is part of Mahler's 'Rückert-Lieder' and one of his most beautiful love songs. Mahler himself quotes the melody in his famous 'Adagietto' from the fifth symphony, a musical declaration of love to his wife Alma. The composer himself orchestrated this song for orchestra and soloist, this purely instrumental adaption for brass quintet (with featured Flugelhorn soloist) brings the song back to it's original, chamber-musical intimacy.

Rückert-Lieder (Songs after Rückert) is a collection of five Lieder for voice and orchestra or piano, based on poems written by Friedrich Rückert. The first four songs were premiered on 29 January 1905 in Vienna, Mahler himself conducting, together with his Kindertotenlieder (also on poems by Rückert). The set of songs was not intended as a cycle: the Lieder were originally published independently from each other, connected only by the poetry and common themes. However, they were later published together and most often have been performed together and come to be known as the Rückert-Lieder, although Mahler did set more texts of Rückert. This arrangement for brass quintet puts the singer's part for flugelhorn solo with the rest of the ensemble playing an adaption of the original's orchestra accompaniment. Using combination of mutes and open playing this arrangement archieves a differentiated sound that makes the complicated late-romantic harmony and counterpoint work really well in the stripped-down instrumentation.
