Higher Ground (I'm pressing on the upward way) is a 19th-century American gospel song with lyrics by Johnson Oatman, Jr. (1856-1922) and music by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856-1932).Both Oatman and Gabriel were prolific writers. Oatman, an ordained Methodist Episcopal minister employed primarily in retail and insurance work, is said to have written over 5,000 hymns and songs in the latter 30-some years of his life.  Although not a talented singer nor recognized as an outstanding preacher, he was acknowledged to have ministered to countless souls through the words of his hymns and songs.Gabriel, a Methodist Episcopal church music director and editor of gospel song books, anthem collections, music instruction manuals, and more, is said to have written between seven and eight thousand texts and/or tunes under his own name and several pseudonyms. In addition to the music for Higher Ground, he composed the music for such well-known gospel songs as His Eye is on the Sparrow and Will the Circle Be Unbroken? The opening line of Oatman’s text (I'm pressing on the upward way) draws especially from Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.†Other sources include passages from the prophets Isaiah and Micah and the Psalms of Ascent (120-134). Gabriel's music cleverly evokes the upward vision of the text with an ascending arpeggio spanning an octave on the first words of the refrain (Lord, lift me up) and the matching of the highest notes of the tune to the words a higher plane.This arrangement for brass quintet expands the meter of the tune from 3/4 to 4/4 to allow for some countermelodic call-and-response by various voices in the ensemble. Important useless but interesting related fact: Brooks is the nephew of Foster Brooks, who made the rounds of '60s TV sitcoms, talkies and variety shows playing a stumbling drunk. Brooks' band talked him out of recording it himself, so he turned it over to Elmo Shropshire (I'm not making this up), who recorded it in 1979. (This is what most people would refer to as a very bad career move on Brooks' part, since he has not otherwise been heard of since.)This version, instrumental only, spares you the silly story ... but everybody reconizes the tune.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. The central musical theme is extrapolated from a basic melodic idea originally intended to be sung by a cantor. While it may be played year-round, In Your Hands makes an especially fitting selection during the Easter season.In Your Hands was composed by Bedford Brass Quintet trumpeter Paul St-Amand in memory of his father, Gerry. The first half underscores time lapse footage of the rapidly melting snowman, syncing precise sforzando punctuations to moments of falling chunks. The sunset remains were gleefully decimated by our six-year-old James.Shuttle from Haneda depicts a delayed return from a trip. The video elicited an atonal compositional style to underscore the hustle and chaos of a city as enormous as Tokyo, but with a lovely view of the Bay about midway through the work.Petite Wave was composed to accompany a time lapse hanging of a three-panel canvas print of the woodcut art “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai in 1831. This art was featured on the cover of Claude Debussy’s “La Mer” when it was published in 1905, prompting a quote from “La Mer.”Fast Food to Fitness aurally illustrates a pan of nine fast food ads on a sheet. The bottom ad ironically promotes “BeFit 360”. The music has a series of exciting flourishes that morph into a sinister chord as the last ad dampens the caloric prospects.Pigeons personifies a substantial flock of pigeons contentedly pecking at grass. I filmed while slowly approaching, occasionally causing a stir. The nervous flock took flight to find less threatening spot of ground to peck. The scene presented some fine opportunities for musical underscoring.Blue Snowman Group accompanies a rare Tokyo storm that dumped inches of wet packing snow. When my ten-year-old started rolling the base of a snowman, I whipped out my cell phone and started a time lapse video. Mom came out and built her own, armed with a spray bottle of colored water. The two snowmen turned blue in the cold and lived happily together for a couple of days.Autumn Fuji Puzzle undersores tightly crafted moments of puzzle-working and deconstruction.Outing in Japan was crafted to highlight key moments of a time lapse, running errands in northwest Tokyo. Many subtle and obvious moments in this work aurally augment visually stimulating moments, including blinking turn signals, passing traffic, turns, vehicle approaches, parking at destinations, and many more.

Bobby Fisco has beautifully arranged a Suite for Brass Quintet taken from the most well-known parts of the work. The arrangement is in 7 movements and also includes a narration part that can be read by a member of the quintet or a non-performer. This work is for standard instrumentation, about 20 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

(It should be noted that the surf's up seriously here only when there's a hurricane),Cash Box called 1964's I Get Around an exciting, tailored-for-teen-tastes hot rod stomper.
