My Ragtime Baby was the 1898 mega hit featured in the Sousa Band European 1900 tour that introduced European audiences to American Ragtime. Fred Stone was a prominent African-American composer and conductor in the early Ragtime movement. The rag is arranged for two B-flat trumpets, horn in F, trombone and tuba. In 1914 Sigmund Romberg was hired by the Shubert brothers to write music for their Broadway theater shows. Romberg wrote Ragtime Arabian Nights for the Broadway revue The Whirl of the World, presented in the Shuberts' Winter Garden Theater, that same year. This is a charming tune, with the verse in a minor key, switching to the relatively major to start the chorus. Our arrangement of this splits melodic responsibilities between the trumpets and French horn. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba). This entertaining and playful cakewalk, forerunner of ragtime style, is by the prominent Canadian-American Black composer Nathaniel Dett who studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. Scored for two trumpets in B-flat (with alternate C trumpet parts), horn (with flugelhorn substitute), trombone (with treble clef euphonium substitute) and tuba, the arrangement has wide audience appeal and is very accessible for less experienced players. Bamboula is from Gottschalk's three Lousiana Creole Pieces, composed from 1844 to 1846 by the 19th century superstar pianist and composer born in New Orleans. The shifting moods and cakewalk characteristics made it one of his most popular and enduring works as well as a precursor to ragtime. The arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets with C trumpet alternate parts, horn in F with flugelhorn/trumpet substitute for horn, trombone and tuba. The young Eubie taught himself the organ after his parents put a $75 organ in their home for 25 cents per week (which would take them almost 6 years to pay off). By the age of 15 was playing piano in Baltimore's night clubs, holding a regular job at Agnes Shelton's sporting house. Blake was already an exceptional pianist by the early 1900's, and he had to simplify his music drastically to get it published. Blake was among the pioneers of ragtime, however he was often too far ahead of his time. He released two rags (Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz) in the same year which Scott Joplin released his Maple Leaf Rag. Unfortunately for Blake, the competition was too strong. Part of the reason for Blake's Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz not making the big time may have been due to Blake the progressive nature of his sound. People found it hard to digest his music, especially the publishers. Bugle Call Rag was composed in 1916 with Carey Morgan. It was one of many patriotic selections written by composers during the World War I era. This delightful piece uses bugle calls and quotes There’ll Be A Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight.A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by brass quintets all over the country including many military groups.
