Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella (French: Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle) is a noël, or Christmas carol, from the Provence region of France. In lyrics by French poet and playwright Émile Blémont (1839-1927), Jeannette and Isabelle are shepherdesses who, upon discovering the baby Jesus and his mother in a stable, run to a nearby village to tell the inhabitants, who are urged to come quietly and whisper softly, so as not to disturb the baby sleeping peacefully in a manger. In Provence today, as in previous generations, torches remain a Christmas tradition, as on Christmas Eve children dress up as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles to Midnight Mass while singing the carol.The melody on which this arrangement is based may date to as early as the 14th century — not as a sacred song, but as a lively dance. French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704) used the melody for a drinking song in a 1672 revival of a comedy by the French playwright Molière. Blémont's sacred lyrics first appeared with this melody in Noëls français (1901), a collection of French carols transcribed and harmonized by musicologist and composer Julien Tiersot (1857-1936).©Copyright 2022 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Here's a chirpy little song from Rodgers & Hammerstein's 1949 production of South Pacific, also mildly mashed up with another song, Bali Hai, from the same production. Lots of covers, from Ella Fitzgerald to a Brit punker who called himself Captain Sensible. (He was sensible enough to spend two weeks at the top of the UK singles list with his version in 1982.)This song draws some criticism from the politically correct for its pidgin English lyric (it's sung by a Polynesian woman in the musical). Sweetwater Brass Press #1046440. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1468129). In 1856 Joseph P. Webster, a Wisconsin songwriter, met Henry D.L. Webster (no relation), formerly the minister of Zanesville, Ohio’s Universalist Church. Joseph was in the process of writing a song but needed lyrics to go with his melody. Henry obliged by writing a longish poem about the love of his life, Ella Blocksom. She had been his fiancée, but the engagement had been broken and, apparently, so had Henry’s heart. Joseph’s melody needed a name that would fit into a three-note phrase, so “Ella” was changed to “Lorena.” Chicago’s Higgins Brothers published the song in 1857, and it became widely popular. When the American Civil war broke out, “Lorena” was beloved by both Union and Confederate soldiers as they thought of the wives and girlfriends they had left behind. J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” is beautiful and plaintive. It is no wonder that this song has remained a sentimental favorite over the years and is still performed and recorded. In this composition, “Lorena: A Brass Quintet Setting,” the “Lorena” tune has been expanded and transformed to create additional melodies that enhance and complement the original. You’ll find it a pleasure to play and a real crowd pleaser for audiences. This composition is 201 measures in length. It begins in the key of E-flat, transitions to B-flat at section C (measure 51) and goes to F at section G (measure 141). Initial tempo marking is Adagio, increasing to Moderato at section C. There are a number of temporary tempo variations and fermata marks, and the last 9 measures are characterized by a gradual slowing. The introduction is 21 measures in length. It leads to the second section, which consists of a plain, simple and straightforward statement of J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” theme, complete with grace notes and gruppetto. In this section, Horn and Trumpet 1 do the honors, eventually joined by Tuba, and it should be played with great expression. At section C, tempo then picks up, and the arrangement presents a series of explications of the theme in various styles. The final section, I (measure 179), reprises most of the variations and ends with a partial reiteration of the “Lorena” theme. Performance time is about eight minutes, forty seconds. Tuba plays several notes near the top of its scale; otherwise, all notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument. Tequila è un celebre brano latin rock eseguito da The Champs nel 1958, reinterpretato in seguito da molti altri artisti.Il brano è stato scritto dal sassofonista Danny Flores, accreditato con il suo nome d'arte, Chuck Rio, perché in quel periodo egli era sotto contratto con un'altra etichetta discografica. Tequila è basata su un ritmo cubano mambo beat. La parola tequila viene gridata tre volte durante il brano.La versione originale del brano, incisa da The Champs il 23 dicembre 1957, è stata pubblicata il 15 gennaio del 1958 dalla Challenge Records come retro del singolo su 7 Train to Nowhere/Tequila. In seguito è stata inclusa nell'EP 7 Go, Champs, Go! e nell'LP avente lo stesso titolo, entrambi pubblicati nel 1958.La canzone raggiunse il primo posto nelle classifiche pop e R&B, e continuerà a essere un importante riferimento della cultura pop fino ai nostri giorni.Successivamente The Champs proporranno variazioni e riarrangiamenti di questo brano negli album Great Dance Hits e Spotlight On The Champs & The Fabulous Cyclones, entrambi del 1962, con i titoli Tequila Twist e Too Much Tequila. Nel primo caso su ritmo twist, nel secondo in versione calypso.

It was the first a capella song ever to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It has also been listed by Rolling Stone as one of the all-time great whistling songs. This version relies on the trumpets for whistling and trombone and horn for the lyric lines. "Gabriel's Oboe" is the main theme for the 1986 film The Mission directed by Roland Joff. The theme was written by Italian composer Ennio Morricone, and has since been arranged and performed several times by artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Holly Gornik, among others. The theme has been called "unforgettable" and a "celebrated oboe melody". Vocalist Sarah Brightman begged Morricone to allow her to put lyrics to the theme to create her own song, "Nella Fantasia". This arrangement for brass quintet (Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, F Horn, Trombone, Tuba) includes two different keys: Bb Major and Ab Major to meet all the executive possibilities of the musicians. The composition is suitable for repertoire, classroom, recital and weddings.

Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych (13 December [O.S. 1 December] 1877 – 23 January 1921; Ukrainian: Микола Дмитрович Леонтович; also Leontovich) was a Ukrainian composer, conductor, ethnomusicologist and teacher. His music was inspired by Mykola Lysenko and the Ukrainian National Music School. Leontovych specialised in a cappella choral music, ranging from original compositions, to church music, to elaborate arrangements of folk music. He is recognised for composing Shchedryk in 1904 (which premiered in 1916), known to the English-speaking world as Carol of the Bells or Ring, Christmas Bells.
