In 2023 I’ve revisited and revised it because it’s just such a silly theme.The tuba part goes fairly low, so in the process of revising, a new, more accessible Tuba part (smol) was written. Jesus Loves Me is one of the most well known and beloved hymns in the Christian faith. This is a hymn that we all learned at a very early age, perhaps in Sunday School, Bible School or Junior Church. It has been with us since 1862. The lyrics were originally written in 1860 as a poem by Anna B. Warner. Then in 1862, the poem was put to music by William Bradbury. This beautiful hymn has withstood the test of time like Amazing Grace, The Old Rugged Cross and so many more.This arrangement is written for Brass Quintet and has three verses and choruses. The first version closely follows the original harmonic structure without any deviations. The second version utilizes a different harmonic sequence and includes some rhymic changes in a few spots. Finally, the third version again includes a different harmonic sequence, modulates to a different key and contains an extended ending. This wonderful piece can be played as special music for your church service, or offertory.

Johann Strauss Sr. wrote this catchy celebratory march in 1848, a month after the Count Josef Radetzky won a now long-forgotten victory in the first Italian war for independence from the Austrian Empire; Radetzky had been a leading light of the Austro-Hungarian army throughout the first half of the 19th century. It was an immediate hit, and it remains so in Austria. These days it's kind of an unofficial national anthem that involves audience participation (clapping and stomping in the appropriate loud passages) and is kind of required content in any concert program, frequently as an encore. In the U.S., it's an Oktoberfest standby. My first exposure to Radetzky came when the Stadtmusik Feldkirch, a community band, was kind enough to allow an American ex-pat to join its ranks for the couple of years we lived there. Feldkirch is a lovely medieval town in far western Austria; it borders directly on Liechtenstein. I played the tenorhorn, which is the alias for a baritone or euphonium over there.

Sweetwater Brass Press #1046440. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1468129). In 1856 Joseph P. Webster, a Wisconsin songwriter, met Henry D.L. Webster (no relation), formerly the minister of Zanesville, Ohio’s Universalist Church. Joseph was in the process of writing a song but needed lyrics to go with his melody. Henry obliged by writing a longish poem about the love of his life, Ella Blocksom. She had been his fiancée, but the engagement had been broken and, apparently, so had Henry’s heart. Joseph’s melody needed a name that would fit into a three-note phrase, so “Ella” was changed to “Lorena.” Chicago’s Higgins Brothers published the song in 1857, and it became widely popular. When the American Civil war broke out, “Lorena” was beloved by both Union and Confederate soldiers as they thought of the wives and girlfriends they had left behind. J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” is beautiful and plaintive. It is no wonder that this song has remained a sentimental favorite over the years and is still performed and recorded. In this composition, “Lorena: A Brass Quintet Setting,” the “Lorena” tune has been expanded and transformed to create additional melodies that enhance and complement the original. You’ll find it a pleasure to play and a real crowd pleaser for audiences. This composition is 201 measures in length. It begins in the key of E-flat, transitions to B-flat at section C (measure 51) and goes to F at section G (measure 141). Initial tempo marking is Adagio, increasing to Moderato at section C. There are a number of temporary tempo variations and fermata marks, and the last 9 measures are characterized by a gradual slowing. The introduction is 21 measures in length. It leads to the second section, which consists of a plain, simple and straightforward statement of J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” theme, complete with grace notes and gruppetto. In this section, Horn and Trumpet 1 do the honors, eventually joined by Tuba, and it should be played with great expression. At section C, tempo then picks up, and the arrangement presents a series of explications of the theme in various styles. The final section, I (measure 179), reprises most of the variations and ends with a partial reiteration of the “Lorena” theme. Performance time is about eight minutes, forty seconds. Tuba plays several notes near the top of its scale; otherwise, all notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument. This composition was crafted as one of those celebratory creations. “Legacy of Valor” was originally composed for brass quintet and rock band, with two vocalists singing a stirring account of legacy handed down from one generation to another. This double brass quintet instrumental rendition of “Legacy of Valor” is indeed a much more musically gratifying composition. It is the way it was supposed to be all along!Released in 2023 for the 76th birthday of the Air Force, this work and its message are appropriate for any patriotic event, including joint performances between any two brass quintets, civilian or military, American or global. Many stirring meanings can be communicated and celebrated through “Legacy of Valor”!

Muskrat Ramble was one of the first. It's a Kid Ory tune -- although that has long been in dispute -- that was first recorded in 1926 by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five. When she died in 2005, The New York Times said this of the song in her obituary: 'Bésame Mucho' is not so much an enduring standard as a global phenomenon. Translated into dozens of languages and performed by hundreds of artists, the song has been an emblem of Latin identity, an anthem of lovers separated by World War II and perennial grist for lounge singers everywhere. Virtually every professional recording musician has covered it, from the Beatles to Placido Domingo. This arrangement borrows its 6/4 time signature (and not much more) from the 2001 recording by Maynard Ferguson and Diane Schuur. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158388). My wife’s from-scratch cinnamon rolls are famous throughout our community—especially among our children’s circle of friends. While enjoying a socially-distanced church service at home on Easter Sunday, there was a batch of those butterfly-inducing cinnamon rolls baking in the new oven. They filled the home with an exquisite aromatic delight. Then the magic motif chimed: “The food is done!†I happened to have my composition notebook with me, and the little four-note tune inspired this composition. It just naturally took me in some happy musical directions, and within a minute or two, the melodic content, replete with fun-filled, muted second-trumpet echoes, was scrawled down. The next day, the music was entered into the computer. It is interesting that I gave the horn the cliché off-beats that all hornists know and love so well. Funny, I usually pride myself on writing for horn as an equal musical instrument; however, this fun, happy melody just demanded an “um-pah†accompaniment. Hopefully there is enough variety to keep the part fun to play. It helps that the piece is only two minutes and something long. The transition into the B section almost wrote itself, modulating to the relative minor. There I paused briefly, wondering how to treat a minor section in such an exuberant piece. Oh, but inspiration continued to flow, and I resumed writing in earnest with a mischievous smile! This section beautifully portrays a naughty, sneaky kid tiptoeing into the kitchen for another cinnamon roll—forbidden until after dinner! The listener can hear the kid’s nervous fluttering heart, and moments of pulling his hand back in startled impishness, and even shuddering as he looks fearfully over his shoulder. At the end of the B section, he gets caught! Witnessing that low-hanging head and puppy dog eyes, mommy finds that she can’t scold the lad too severely. “After dinner, little one…†she reprimands with an understanding grin. The jubilant melody returns to round out the work’s ternary ABA form, though this time with a very sticky Ives-esque climax, reminiscent of a gooey cinnamon roll mess. Too enjoyable to be bothered by prospects of cleaning up, the music shrugs it off with flippant ragtime syncopations, and ends with the “hic-burp†of a very satisfied tummy.
