Borodin's String Trio in G minor dates from 1855, one of his early works for 2 Violins and Cello. It is based on the once well-known Russian folk song Chem tebya ya ogorchila (What have I done to hurt you?). The music is about 7 minutes in length in one movement with the lovely bitter-sweet theme and eight variations.

The Trio in G minor was largely forgotten until the mid 20th Century. Justin Chiang's lovely arrangement for Brass Quintet for advanced performers works exceptionally well.

Trio Sonata No.9 \"The Golden Sonata\", Z.810 (originally in F Major) by Henry Purcell and arranged for Brass Quintet by Kenneth Abeling. This Sonata was originally written for two violins, cello and continuo and all four original movements are included. An excellent setting of a Sousa march dedicated to the US Naval Reserve. Sousa joined the US Navy during WWI to help train musicians for the war effort. Tin Pan Alley composer Jean Schwartz' "Hello Central, Give Me No Man's Land" was written toward the end of World War I (in 1918). A change from the usually optimistic patriotism of wartime Tin Pan Alley songs, this one is very wistful, almost bleak. The lyrics of the original depict a young girl trying to put a call through to her father in no man's land. In an informal concert setting, this song presents a nice contrast with circus march, Dixieland, or other upbeat music. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba).
