Published by Will Corbin (A0.1457446). From the Department of Don't Do It: A brass quintet take on the Pointer Sisters' version of Automatic. Their original had lots of electronic background stuff going on, plus a load of percussion. What's left without that is a lot of tricky rhythms, since the horns have to carry the rhythmic load. It was composed during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, probably during the 1630s for use in the Sistine Chapel. Originally composed for two choirs (one of 5 voices, one of 4 voices) this adaptation has been arranged for horn quintet.Performance Notes:Optional repeat included to match the original 5 verses. Without the accompanying lyrics, minor liberties have been taken with the repeated rhythms beginning each verse. Interpretation adapted from the 1824 manuscript by Anton Friedrich Justus Thibaut. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1393231). When I Fall in Love is a popular song, written by Victor Young (music) and Edward Heyman (lyrics). It was introduced in Howard Hughes' last film One Minute to Zero as the instrumental titled Theme from One Minute to Zero. Jeri Southern sang on the first vocal recording released in April 1952 with the song's composer, Victor Young, handling the arranging and conducting duties. The song has become a standard, with many artists recording it; the first hit version was sung by Doris Day released in July 1952.Day's recording was made on June 5, 1952. It was released by Columbia Records as catalog number 39786 and issued with the flip side Take Me in Your Arms. The song reached number 20 on the Billboard chart.A 1996 recording by Natalie Cole, sung as a duet with her father Nat King Cole using vocals from his 1956 version, won 1996 Grammys for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and Best Instrumental Arrangement with Accompanying Vocal(s).Lovely chord progressions here! Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461378). My dad heard this song playing as background music for some TV show. He suggested it as a quintet piece (he liked us mostly because we played some of his favorite Dixieland tunes). The result is, well, at least a little bit weird. The original haunting Pat Metheny recording was played on electric sitar, with a high-speed snare drum providing train effect. I wanted to achieve the same thing, so the horns take care of it throughout the piece (with tuba providing it from start to finish). And the song needed a train horn for effect. I wanted to know what chord a train whistle blew, and the Internet told me it was a ninth chord. It actually charted in the '50s by artists you've never heard of. Weirdly, it has been recorded in 15 different Finnish versions under the title Hernandon salaisuus. (The Finns possess an overabundance of vowels.) And it was the theme for the gangstger character Brick Top in the wonderfully weird 200 flick Snatch.But it's a wonderful tango by Jerry Ross when you take away the words.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1465664). Here's an adaptation one of roughly 500 different recorded covers of this Antonio Carlos Jobim bossa/jazz classic. It's built on John LaBarbera's down-tempo ballad version for the Buddy Rich big band. Trombonists know this one for two features: a gorgeous but challenging bass 'bone solo, and a tricky but gorgeous 'bone section soli. I've plugged the tuba in for part of the bass 'bone solo (it would take a superhuman tuba player to manage all of it) and preserve the soli in quintet form.If you need other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

The Finnish NA arranged for Brass Quintet.There also versions for String & full Orchestra in my two stores.The anthem lyrics were taken from a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Swedish-speaking poet, called “VÃ¥rt land†(Our Land). The song was first sung in 1848 by a student group and became popular in Scandinavia and many of his patriotic poems, including VÃ¥rt land were used by promoters of Finnish nationalism. The poem was translated into Finnish some decades later, after VÃ¥rt land was well established as a national song, by Paavo Eemil Kajander and became the anthem before 1917 independence. Estonia‘s anthem, adopted 20 years later, has the same melody, however the last few lines do not repeat as they do normally in the Finnish anthem. Interestingly, the anthem has never been officially legislated as the Finnish anthem, but rather is traditionally used as the anthem. As such, there is no standard way to perform the 11-verse anthem, but usually the first and the last verses (as presented here) are sung. There sometimes arises a debate in Finland to change the anthem to Jean Sibelius’ song “Finlandia†(the melody was used in Biafra), a song recognized internationally as a symbol of Finland, but the general opinion seems to be for now to keep the current anthem.
