Jerry Lewis ostensibly forked over $30,000 of his own money to the songwriters to come up with something that woluld be a hit for his movie partner, Dean Martin. That's Amore did the job, becoming Martin's signature song. It first showed up in the 1953 Martin/Lewis comedy The Caddy, for which it received an Oscar nomination for best oriiginal song. (It lost to Doris Day''s Secret Love from Calamity Jane.It has been covered countless times, by artists from Annette Funicello to the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra.This version leans on the trumpets for melody, with the others providing the oom-pah-pah and other support. If you've never seen it, at least check out that part of it (I think it's on YouTube). It's just fun, and it's a great song. It was nominated (along with two other songs also from Enchanted) for the Oscar for best original song. They all lost to an awful song you've never heard from a movie you've never seen. I think maybe the Academy has developed an allergy to Disney. Well…this was originally written specifically for one of our education shows (Sailing the High Seas), but we decided it’s worth putting out into the world because it’s shorter and substantially less taxing than the standard editions. This particular arrangement has been reduced to under 2 minutes, making it perfect for education shows when you want some Dixieland, but you don’t have all day. There’s enough written-in-improv lines (inspired by the Louis Armstrong recordings) to make it feel right, but without requiring actual improvisation. And, as always, there’s ample rest for the higher brass players. This piece is so painless to play that it could be put at the end of any recital, no matter how tiring, and everyone can get through this last piece while taking the audience out with some Dixieland fun.We also have a trio version of this piece!Duration: just under 2 minutes

A barcarolle (from French, also barcarole; originally, Italian barcarola or barcaruola, from barca 'boat') is a traditional folk song sung by Venetian gondoliers, or a piece of music composed in that style. It is characterized by a rhythm reminiscent of the gondolier's stroke, almost invariably in 6/8 meter at a moderate tempo. In classical music, the most famous barcarolle is Jacques Offenbach's Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour from his opera The Tales of Hoffmann. This easy arrangement for brass quintet (Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, F Horn, Trombone, Tuba) is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

The Boar's Head CarolThis Christmas carol talks about a feast during midwinter in which a wild boar was served as the main dish and its head placed in a situated position to symbolize bravery and abundance. Closely related to the Norse tradition of boar sacrifice to their goddess Freyja during the feast of Winter Solstice, this song originated from an urban legend in Queen's College, Oxford back in the 15th century which tells of how a scholar from Queen’s College managed to kill an attacking boar and offered it at dinner.The song was first published in English during the 1520’s in a book entitled Christmase Carolles Newly Emprynted at London in the flete street, which was written by Jan van Wynken de Worde. Wilt Thou Forgive That Sin? are the opening words to the poem, A Hymn to God the Father, written by the English poet, priest, and scholar John Donne (1572-1631). A theologically rich and poetically masterful text, it presents an appeal to God, in which Donne asks Wilt thou forgive? the original sin into whch man is born (stanza 1) and the personal sins of the individual (stanza 2), and in which he acknowledges his own fear of death and his hope of salvation through God's Son, Jesus Christ (stanza 3). Donne commissioned a tune to accompany the hymn from the English early baroque composer John Hilton (1599-1657), of which Donne's friend and biographer Izaak Walton said, he caused it to be set to a most grave and solemn tune, and to be often sung to the organ by the Choristers of St. Paul’s Church, in his own hearing.... It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.

Dragon’s Breath, Op. 139 for brass quintet began as a short brass quintet fanfare as a gift to celebrate Giddings Mouthpieces 20th anniversary of making stainless steel mouthpieces, on which I played for much of my Air Force career. Ivan, the owner of Giddings Mouthpieces, was pleased with the gesture, but with the feedback that the low brass needed to have more fun. With that feedback and some encouraging words from Esteban Batallán, the principal trumpeter of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), I went to work on this fiery piece.The evocative title Dragon’s Breath comes from a heat treatment that Ivan Giddings uses on some of his mouthpieces. It is a title fitting of a fiery piece! Especially in light of my family moving to Japan during the compositional process, the title is also autobiographical with dragons being a prevalent theme throughout many Asian countries.Although trumpet parts in both B-flat and C are provided, the trumpet parts lay much more comfortably on C trumpets than on B-flat. The technical requirements of all five parts present delightful challenges and weave a complex furor throughout the piece, even when underlying the lyrical, albeit turbulent, melodies. Story line and imagery are left to the hearer’s imagination based on everything the title may invoke.

Between performing sets of Christmas carols at a mall on the outskirts of Tokyo, I purchased a stunning 1000-piece puzzle of Mount Fuji as a Christmas gift for my wife. She is fond of puzzles. When I started putting together time lapse videos with brass quintet music, the fast-motion working of a puzzle sounded intriguing. We had just completed a different 1000-piece puzzle, so I estimated that the completed video would be less than a minute. The camera and table were set up for the filming, and then I opened the box. The tiny quarter-inch puzzle pieces shocked me! I even let out a gasp. However, everything was set up, and I was determined to get the time lapse footage. The process took a great portion of three days. Were it not for the end goal of a time lapse video, I think we would have abandoned the cursed puzzle long before completion. We got it done on 2 Jan 2024 though, and several days later I revived a cute little ricky-ticky piece in the works, gave it a title, and completed it in two days. One key moment is a musical laugh, as if the menacingly challenging puzzle were mocking us as we struggled so long to complete it. Duration: 3:00.

With surprise she replied: No, he's not heavy; he's my brother.He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother is a ballad written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. Originally recorded by Kelly Gordon in 1969, the song became a worldwide hit for the Hollies later that year and also a hit for Neil Diamond in 1970. It has been recorded by many artists in subsequent years. The Hollies' version was re-released in 1988 and again was a major hit in the UK.Scott and Russell were introduced to each other by Johnny Mercer, at a California nightclub. Although Russell was dying of lymphoma and the pair met only three times, they managed to collaborate on the song.Not sure how many brass quintet versions of this music is available, but here's my representation of it. It's You I Like is a heartfelt song aimed at children, but the Costas arrangement and Rogers' somewhat generic lyrics turned this into a work that could as easily be interpreted as a torch song. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808673).    Brahms composed Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift, his longest composition, during the period, 1865-1868. For the libretto, he eschewed the Latin text of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, using instead verses he chose from the German-language Luther Bible. Thus, it was A German Requiem. The Roman Church’s Requiem Mass begins with prayers for the dead; Brahms, on the other hand, chose to console the living and framed his first movement around the second of the Beatitudes, Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. The first movement is, indeed, comforting, filled with warmth and beauty. This arrangement translates Brahms’ choral parts and orchestral accompaniment into a warm and appealing five-brass-instruments version.    This arrangement was completed in 2017, and performance time runs about 10 minutes, 32 seconds.
