Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458394). TUBA ALERT! Most recorded versions of this Henry Mancini classic hand the melody to flutes and piccolos. But baby elephants don't piccolo, they tuba. (This from actual personal experience.) So the heavy melodic lifting in this arrangement goes there. The song was featured in the 1962 latter-day John Wayne adventure romance comedy Hatari, a film from which its theme song is the only thing worth remembering. The song won Mancini a 1963 Grammy for best instrumental song. A 1962 recording by Lawrence Welk (!) reached No. 48 on Billboard's Hot 100. Jerry Lewis ostensibly forked over $30,000 of his own money to the songwriters to come up with something that woluld be a hit for his movie partner, Dean Martin. That's Amore did the job, becoming Martin's signature song. It first showed up in the 1953 Martin/Lewis comedy The Caddy, for which it received an Oscar nomination for best oriiginal song. (It lost to Doris Day''s Secret Love from Calamity Jane.It has been covered countless times, by artists from Annette Funicello to the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra.This version leans on the trumpets for melody, with the others providing the oom-pah-pah and other support. This arrangement adapted for brass quintet was designed to make its listeners weep with emotion, because the adaptation preserves the original essence of the work, keeping its integrity faithful to what Beethoven wanted to transmit, with only a slight change in tone and addition of harmonic resources in the structure of the arrangement. Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice.Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

It's on everybody's list of greatest songs ever. The unending guitar solo that fades out to end the song -- by Hotel composer Don Felder and Joe Walsh -- gets a nod here with 16 bars of trombone solo. OK, it's not quite the same thing. Nor is any of it. But you try to get a ringing 12-string guitar sound out of a couple of trumpets and a French horn.I think it's at least recognizable, and maybe even presentable. It offers a great way to feature your 5 best brassers or as a transition piece. Perhaps something in the lobby as people are coming into the concert. Easily playable by most high school players or advanced junior high. It starts out timid, almost scared, like a child that doesn't want to get caught peeking, but gradually opens up into a swing style, with a toe tapping feel and a great rope at the end played by the trombone. Speaking of trombone, they get to have some glissando fun and the horn player gets to show off their rip technique.

Brahms's original work was for piano 4-hands. This brass quintet arrangement is a half step lower than Brahms's original piece, so it fits well into all of the brass parts. Higher brass all have ample rest and nothing is high or taxing. Also, the tempo changes have been written out, so there's no time wasted in rehearsal discussing how to handle tempo! Speaking of tempo...this piece is super fun to play for education shows. Kids can move along to the tempo and feel the abrupt changes throughout the piece.No playing headaches...just lots of fun for the musicians as well as the audience!
