Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1147711). â€œThe Huron Carolâ€ is the popular name for a Christmas song written in the language of the Wendat, an indigenous people of Canada â€” their name meaning â€œpeople of the islandâ€ or â€œdwellers on a peninsulaâ€ â€” nicknamed â€œHuronâ€ (â€œboar's headâ€) by French explorers and traders due to the bristly hairstyle of Wendat men.The song began as a tool for teaching and converting the Wendat to Christianity, and it was likely written in the early 1640s by the French Jesuit missionary, Jean de BrÃ©beuf. In Wendat, the song is titled â€œJesous Ahatonnia,â€ which means â€œJesus is Born.â€ The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song, â€œUne Jeune Pucelleâ€ (â€œA Young Maidâ€). Jean de BrÃ©beufâ€™s lyrics present the Nativity story using images and ideas that would have been familiar to the Wendat. Angels are â€œspiritsâ€ and â€œsky peopleâ€; the Magi (wise men) are â€œelders,â€ and as an act of reverence they oil Jesusâ€™ scalp, a practice Wendat people would have recognized. Today, â€œThe Huron Carol'sâ€ most well-known lyrics, beginning â€œ'Twas in the moon of winter-time,â€ were written by Canadian poet Jesse Middleton and published in 1927 in a small illustrated book titled â€œThe First Canadian Christmas Carol.â€Middletonâ€™s text is not a translation, but a complete rewriting of â€œJesous Ahatonniaâ€ for English speakers, and bears almost no relation to the original Wendat text. Middleton relied on stereotypes, critics say, painting a picture of an indigenous Nativity in a â€œlodge of broken bark,â€ with â€œhunter bravesâ€ replacing shepherds, and â€œgifts of fur and beaver peltâ€ delivered by â€œchiefs from far.â€ Still, the carol has long been popular, perhaps in part due to its refrain, â€œJesus your King is born, Jesus is born.
