It is a slow piece is a South American style.Based on the poem: Lyrics: 1. My roots once clung to the earth, The wind is calm the river still. As if nothing else survives. My world is empty, am I alive? From my limbs a fruit was plucked, Within its sheath my heart was tucked. Its seeds contained my unknown future, Inside a flesh so sweet and pure. 2. Would my seeds find a place to fall? Nice fertile ground so they'd grow tall. Or would they find some barren ground. Where no love or nurture can be found? Without the fruit my limbs were bare. An old tree nearby just stood and stared. Why should it stop and help the tree Who let its fruit be taken from thee. 3. About the charmer who took the fruit? Should he help to make them grow? Instead he walked right off the land. With barely a wave of his hand. He bit the apple as he walked away. Enjoying its flesh but did not stay. No care at all for the damage he’d done He took the heart from his loved one. 4. So grow another fruit you say. And yes that would be the logical way. But some trees grow abundant fruit. Small and nice without dispute. Others instead grow one to perfection. Round and sweet, on close inspection. But once it’s gone then that is all. Then no more shall ever fall. 5. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1459167). A song doesn't get more traveled than this one. American Cole Porter wrote it in 1935 while on a South Pacific cruise between Indonesia and Fiji aboard a British liner. Its roots are in a Latin dance from the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. So it's somewhere between a minuet and a samba. The name of the dance, beguine, is Creole (probably pejorative) for white woman. The song was first performed in a Broadway musical called Jubilee. It didn't get much traction until Artie Shaw recorded it with his big band, in a purely swing mode, in 1938; it became the 3rd best-selling recording of the year and set off a new dance craze. Check out the drummer in the YouTube video of Shaw's band performing the song, with special attention to the drummer. It's a young and relatively quite subdued Buddy Rich. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, sticks pretty close to a Latin feel except for a swing break in the middle.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. James Sugar Boy Crawford turned it into a song, and his band, Sugar Boy and his Cane Cutters (southern Louisiana had a lot of that) recorded it in 1953 as Jock-a-Mo, which may mean kiss my ass or a defiant response to that effect. It was recorded again, as kind of a whim, in 1964 by the girl trio The Dixie Cups, who made it a hit. It has since been endlessly covered by everyone from Cyndi Lauper to The Grateful Dead.This arrangement is essentially solo variations on the main melody backed by horn rhythms. If you want to make it go on endlessly, it's a simple three-chord tune (actually, mostly two chords) that lends itself to simple improv. ?Were You There? is a nineteenth-century African-American spiritual that likely predates the American Civil War, and may have roots in a folk hymn known in Tennessee as ?Have You Heard How They Crucified MyLord?? It was first published in William Eleazar Barton's 1899 Old Plantation Hymns; and in 1940, it was included in the hymnal of the Episcopal Church with harmonization by C. Winfred Douglas, making it the first spiritual to be included in any major American hymnal. This arrangement evokes the call-and-response tradition of the spiritual, and features solo trumpet answered by low brass in the introduction and first stanza, solo trombone/low brass trio in the second stanza, and full ensemble in the final stanza. Although appropriate for use throughout the year, it is particularly fitting for performance on Good Friday, Holy Saturday (Easter Vigil) and Easter sunrise services. Although it was originally known as a ‘Russian- Romani’ folksong, at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, it achieved a much wider international reputation when Italian-born British composer, Adalgiso Ferraris, published a new version in 1910. It was also later sung and recorded by Al Bowlly in 1939. It has also gained some currency as a jazz tune.
