Four Early Jazz Classics from the USA for Brass Quintet includes: 1)Little Brown Jug:It was originally a drinking song. It remained well known as a folk song into the early 20th century. Like many songs which make reference to alcohol, it enjoyed new popularity during the Prohibition era. In 1939, bandleader Glenn Miller recorded and broadcast his swing instrumental arrangement of the tune with great success, and the number became one of the best known orchestrations of the American Big Band era. 2)Frankie & Johnny:Frankie and Johnny (sometimes spelled Frankie and Johnnie; also known as Frankie and Albert or just Frankie) is a traditional American popular song. It tells the story of a woman, Frankie, who finds that her man Johnny was making love to another woman and shoots him dead. Frankie is then arrested; in some versions of the song she is also executed. 3)Tin Roof Blues:Tin Roof Blues is a jazz composition by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings first recorded in 1923. It was written by band members Paul Mares, Ben Pollack, Mel Stitzel, George Brunies and Leon Roppolo. The tune has become a jazz standard and is one of the most recorded and often played New Orleans jazz compositions. 4)Battle Hymn of the Republic:The Battle Hymn of the Republic, also known as Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory outside of the United States, is a song by American writer Julia Ward Howe using the music from the song John Brown’s Body. Howe’s more famous lyrics were written in November 1861, and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The song links the judgment of the wicked at the end of time (Old Testament, Isaiah 63; New Testament, Rev. 19) with the American Civil War. Since that time, it has become an extremely popular and well-known American patriotic song. Mr. Trombonology by African American composer, trombonist, bandleader and publisher Nathaniel Cleophas Shorty Davis was written in 1917 as a Trombone solo in the American genre of Ragtime featuring the trombone's patented glissando as the hook. These solos were also called smears or jazzes. Mr. Trombonology is one of five entertaining works from Davis' Trombone Family written between 1915 and 1921 and comes with the subtitle - A Characteristic Trombone Smear. The Son of Oh Slip It Man. This arrangement has been expertly arranged by Joshua Hauser for Brass Quintet with the Trombonist as the featured soloist and is playable by moderately advanced performers. Cherry Classics Music will be publishing the complete series of these works for Brass Quintet by Davis arranged by Mr. Hauser. Thanks to Douglas Yeo for his research and advice.

This song starts with the narrator/lyricist saying that he overheard a guy at the train station trying to say farewell to his girl.  The guy would kiss her, bid her adieu, get on the train, then get off and do the whole thing over again.  And, he did this seven times!  What would he say to her each time?  He’d tell her that he’s leaving, that she shouldn’t cry, that he’ll write and that if she does not hear from him she should assume he’s been arrested.  What a romantic line!   Anyway, that’s the gist of the “Toot, Toot, Tootsie!†lyrics.  Credited to Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo, New York City’s Leo Feist, Inc. first published this upbeat, leave-taking song in 1922.  It had been one of 29 numbers featured in the 1921 Broadway production Bombo, a vehicle designed to showcase the talent of Al Jolson.  Six years later Jolson sang it in The Jazz Singer, generally recognized as the first sound feature film.  Additionally, all three composers, plus Ted Fio Rito and Eddie Cantor, also made early and very popular recordings.  This bubbly, cheerful arrangement opens in the key of F major with a suggested tempo of 120 BPM.  After an 8-measure introduction, the piece goes right to the familiar chorus with Trumpet 1 and Trombone switching leads and ending with a wonderful Fillmore-style smear.  The tempo then slows dramatically for a somewhat pensive interpretation of the verse, the narrator’s observations, Horn and Trumpet 1 alternating the lead.  At measure 67 the chorus repeats faster than ever, a recommended 132 BPM, as Trombone and the two Trumpets take turns with the melody.  This leads right into a repeat of the verse—this time played at full speed—and a change of key to D-flat major.  Trombone and Tuba play in unison, exchanging the melody with Trumpets, right on into the third go-round of the chorus.  The piece wraps up with a vaudeville-style conclusion and eventually fades away.  (But don’t miss Trombone's four-measure reference to “Charlottetown Is Burning Down/Goodbye, Liza Jane†at measure 141.)Lots of fun!  Completed in 2023, performance time at the suggested tempo runs about 2 minutes, 47 seconds. The young Eubie taught himself the organ after his parents put a $75 organ in their home for 25 cents per week (which would take them almost 6 years to pay off). By the age of 15 was playing piano in Baltimore's night clubs, holding a regular job at Agnes Shelton's sporting house. Blake was already an exceptional pianist by the early 1900's, and he had to simplify his music drastically to get it published. Blake was among the pioneers of ragtime, however he was often too far ahead of his time. He released two rags (Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz) in the same year which Scott Joplin released his Maple Leaf Rag. Unfortunately for Blake, the competition was too strong. Part of the reason for Blake's Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz not making the big time may have been due to Blake the progressive nature of his sound. People found it hard to digest his music, especially the publishers. Bugle Call Rag was composed in 1916 with Carey Morgan. It was one of many patriotic selections written by composers during the World War I era. This delightful piece uses bugle calls and quotes There’ll Be A Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight.A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. It's simple melody is supported by an even more simple background providing some easy listening for your audiences. This work will acquaint your students with music from the Impressionist Period and the teacher should select some traditional paintings to help set the correct mood for this type of work. Also, players must work the ensemble so that a clean rubato interpretation is performed. A Trombone-Substitute for Horn part is included. The first trumpet range has a brief hi A, but all ranges remain in a comforatable level for advanced middle school and young high school players.

This brass quintet was adapted from Dekker's original 18-piece big band composition which was commisioned and performed by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra in April 2023 at The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Kansas City, MO. This piece is medium difficult and is accessible to a good high school group or college/service level band. Forever And A Day can be performed by a traditional 5-piece brass quintet or by adding the optional auxiliary percussion parts provided.The piece begins with a wistful chorale before leading into a quasi funk groove that is propelled throughout the composition via contemporary harmonies, rhythms and mood transformations. The energy of this piece is fueled by the juxtaposition of modern style versus Classical elements.Careful attention should be paid to balance/blend, steady rhythm, dynamics, articulation and meter changes. Optional auxiliary percussion parts are included for shaker and tambourine if desired. Run time is 5:54. Enjoy!
