This piccolo trumpet classic is arranged here for brass quintet: Piccolo Trumpet (optional C-Trumpet part included); B-flat Trumpet (optional C-Trumpet part included); Horn; Trombone; and Tuba. This makes a great Christmas or Easter brass feature, or a fantastic companion piece to the Canadian Brass arrangement of Piazzolla's Libertango (same instrumentation). A slow five measure introduction is followed immediately by the lively third movement. The B-flat Trumpet part and Horn part are definitely challenging, but well within the wheelhouse of most college players. The trombone has a high b-flat, but is otherwise not technically demanding and the tuba part is easily manageable.

Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802677). Born in Venice, Marcello was the son of a senator. As such, he enjoyed a comfortable life that gave him the scope to pursue his interest in music. He was a contemporary of Tomaso Albinoni. He held concerts in his hometown and also composed and published several sets of concertos, including six concertos under the title of La Cetra (The Lyre), as well as cantatas, arias, canzonets, and violin sonatas. Marcello, being a slightly older contemporary of Antonio Vivaldi, often composed under the pseudonym Eterio Stinfalico, his name as a member of the celebrated Arcadian Academy (Pontificia Accademia degli Arcadi). He died in Padua in 1747.Alessandro's brother was the more well-known Benedetto Marcello, also a composer.Although most of his works are infrequently performed today, Marcello is regarded as a very competent composer. His La Cetra concertos are unusual for their wind solo parts, concision and use of counterpoint within a broadly Vivaldian style, according to Grove, placing them as a last outpost of the classic Venetian Baroque concerto.[citation needed]The Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D minor op. 1, S D935, is an early 18th-century concerto for oboe, strings and continuo. Perhaps his best-known work. Its worth was affirmed by Johann Sebastian Bach who transcribed it for harpsichord (BWV 974). A number of editions have been published, including an edition in C minor because the baroque oboe played a whole tone lower than the modern oboe.Here is a take on brass instruments, with a basic or an advanced version for the euphonium soloist. The earliest extant manuscript containing Johann Sebastian Bach's solo keyboard arrangement of the concerto, BWV 974, dates from around 1715.Bach's keyboard version was published as an arrangement of a concerto by Antonio Vivaldi in the 19th century. In 1923 the C minor version of the oboe concerto was published as a composition by Benedetto Marcello, Alessandro's brother. In the second half of the 20th century several publications indicated Alessandro again as the composer of the piece, as it had been in its early 18th-century print, and the oboe concerto was again published in its D minor version.This easy arrangement for brass quintet (Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, F Horn, Trombone, Tuba) of the marvelous second movement (adagio) of the concerto is suitable for any occasion.

It can be freely played by beginning students, because of the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not prevent it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument.
