The Waiting Game can be applied to various situations in life where there is no control over the timing of an event and one must simply wait for it to unfold. The first movement, “Anticipationâ€, the first phase, takes the listener through the ambivalent feelings of both dread and positivity depending on the day. The 2nd movement, “Exaspirationâ€, is slow and expressive, representing time dragging on. This is the most frustrating period of the waiting process. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1372453). This religious solo motet was composed when Mozart was staying in Milan. During the production of his opera Lucio Silla which was being performed there in the Teatro Regio Ducale. It was written for the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini, who had sung the part of the primo uomo Cecilio in Lucio Silla the previous year. While waiting for the end of the run (from 26 December 1772 to 25 January 1773), Mozart composed the motet for his singer, whose technical excellence he admired. Its first performance took place at the Theatine Church on 17 January 1773, while Rauzzini was still singing in Mozart's opera at night. Mozart made some revisions around 1780. On 30 May 1779, a Trinity Sunday, a revised version was performed by Francesco Ceccarelli at the Holy Trinity Church, Salzburg. Another revised version was intended for Christmas. The manuscripts of the two Salzburg versions were discovered in 1978 in St. Jakob, Wasserburg am Inn. In modern times, the motet is usually sung by a female soprano.I was tempted to combine the soprano and a brass quintet. We have performed this arrangement quite successfully at many venues, including a national music festival (Wakkerstroom, South Africa, March 2023).

It was originally recorded as a big band/swing tune by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra and featured in the 1941 movie Sun Valley Serenade. It was the first song to receive a gold record, presented by RCA Victor in 1942, for sales of 1.2 million copies.The song opens up with the band, sounding like a train rolling out of the station, complete with the trumpets and trombones imitating a train whistle, before the instrumental portion comes in playing two parts of the main melody. This is followed by the vocal introduction of four lines before the main part of the song is heard.The main song opens with a dialog between a passenger and a shoeshine boy:Pardon me, boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?Yes, yes, Track 29!Boy, you can give me a shine.Can you afford to board the Chattanooga Choo Choo?I've got my fare, and just a trifle to spare.The singer describes the train's route, originating from Pennsylvania Station in New York and running through Baltimore to North Carolina before reaching Chattanooga. He mentions a woman he knew from an earlier time in his life, who will be waiting for him at the station and with whom he plans to settle down for good. After the entire song is sung, the band plays two parts of the main melody as an instrumental, with the instruments imitating the WHOO WHOO of the train as the song ends.Here's my representation thereof with Sam Harrill's nifty percussion score supporting it.

This 3-movement brass quintet is program music, in that it is written in the style usually used to depict the American West, and frequently has the instruments taking on the speaking roles of cowboys or other western characters. The first movement has a group of cowboys sitting around a campfire telling tall tales (at least this is what I had in mind). In the second movement ranchers (or farmers) are waiting desperately for rain, which comes only briefly. The third movement involves rival families, a surprise wedding, and a square dance. Silly, maybe, but it helped me write the music, which is fun to play. Suitable for advanced intermediate and professional quintets. Duration: 11 minutes, 11 seconds.

Maneo [pronounced MAH-nee-oh] is a Latin word meaning I remain or I await. The concept behind this piece is the process of waiting for and working toward the fulfillment of goals and dreams that seem far off, which requires both patience and persistence. The first movement, Patience, is painfully slow and full of dense, dissonant chords that avoid resolution. Although the melody wanders through several tonal centers, in many ways it feels as though it has not gone anywhere. However, as the movement progresses to a climax, the incessant tritone dissonance finally begins to dissolve. In the second movement, Persistence, the augmented triad dominates both harmonically and melodically for much of the piece, accompanied by relentless eighth-note motion. The main theme from the first movement appears first as an accompaniment figure, and later in a more prominent melodic role in combination with other motives used throughout the movement. A contrasting, dream-like middle section represents catching a glimpse of reaching the sought-after goal, and this theme returns towards the end in a triumphant finish. The two movements are played consecutively with no pause in between.

E lucevan le stelle (And the stars were shining) is a romantic aria from the third act of Puccini's opera Tosca, written in 1900. It is sung in Act 3 by Mario Cavaradossi (tenor), a painter who is awaiting his execution and in love with the singer Tosca. (Wikipedia).
This aria is one of the most beloved in all the operatic repertoire and has been captured beautifully in a lovely arrangement for brass quintet by Vikention Gionanidis. The music is appropriate for advanced performers.
The instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in C (B-flat parts supplied as well), Horn, Trombone, and Tuba.
