Brass Quintet - Intermediate - Digital Download By Randy Travis, Roger Miller. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Individual Part, Score, Set of Parts. 8 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
An arrangement of the evergreen top hit song from 1964 ''King of the Road'', set for classical Brass Quintet. "King of the Road" is a song written by country singer Roger Miller, who first recorded it in November 1964. The lyrics tell of the day-to-day life of a hobo who, despite being poor (a "man of means by no means"), revels in his freedom, describing himself humorously and cynically as the "king of the road". It was Miller's fifth single for Smash Records. The popular crossover record hit No. 1 on the US Country chart, No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and No. 1 on the Easy Listening surveys. It was also No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart, and in Norway. Miller recalled that the song was inspired when he was driving and saw a sign on the side of a barn that read, "Trailers for sale or rent".[6] This would become the opening line of the song. The song has been covered by many other artists, including George Jones, Dean Martin, Val Doonican, Jack Jones, James Booker, The Fabulous Echoes, Boney M., R.E.M., Johnny Paycheck, Glen Campbell, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Boxcar Willie, Randy Travis, Rangers, James Kilbane, John Stevens, the Statler Brothers, Rufus Wainwright and Teddy Thompson, Giant Sand, Peligro, The Proclaimers, Ray Conniff Singers, The Reverend Horton Heat, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Jim White. James "The King" Brown (an Elvis impersonator) performed the song for a 2001 Audi commercial on German TV.[7] Of R.E.M.'s version, a shambolic, drunken, offhand rendering, guitarist Peter Buck would later comment, "If there was any justice in the world, Roger Miller should be able to sue for what we did to this song." "King of the Road" was performed live by Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Marty Stuart, Dwight Yoakam and Dolly Parton during Miller's posthumous induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame at the 1995 CMA Awards ceremony. The song is featured in Wim Wenders' 1976 film Im Lauf der Zeit (In the Course of Time; English title Kings of the Road). It is also played at the beginning of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Brokeback Mountain, Into the Wild (2007), Traveller (1997), and Swingers (1996). Miller performs it in the concert film The Big T.N.T. Show. The recording by The Proclaimers is included in the film The Crossing (1990). Near the end of their official music video, the pair are shown reading a newspaper whose headline is "Roger Miller, King of Plugs". Miller's recording appears in an episode of the Super Dave TV show, where Super Dave Osborne (Bob Einstein) sings along while sitting at a piano mounted on top of his tour bus. The bus eventually goes into a low tunnel, slamming into the piano and Osborne and pushing them off the bus and onto the ground. A send-up version by English entertainer Billy Howard was a British chart hit in 1976. A German take by the band Wise Guys exists, the parody referring to speeding on the Autobahn.

Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1109240). Arranged standard brass quintet. The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. This is no 1 of the Sequenz Dies irae The Dies irae (Day of Wrath) opens with a show of orchestral and choral might A rising chromatic scurry of sixteenth-notes leads into a chromatically rising harmonic progression with the chorus singing Quantus tremor est futurus (what trembling there will be in reference to the Last Judgment). This material is repeated with harmonic development before the texture suddenly drops to a trembling unison figure evocatively painting the Quantus tremor text. It suits the brass quintet. Interesting parts for every player. . Mozart Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa I have also arranged Mozarts Motet “Ave Verum Corpus†K618.

The music has been spread throughout, to avoid a constant tutti! Using A euphonium instead of a trombone will give a smoother sound! The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). This is no 4 of the Sequenz Recordare At 130 measures, the Recordare (Remember) is the work's longest movement, as well as the first in triple meter the movement is a setting of no fewer than seven stanzas of the Dies irae. The form of this piece is somewhat similar to sonata form, with an exposition around two themes (mm. 1–37), a development of two themes (mm. 38–92) and a recapitulation (mm. 93–98). It suits the brass quintet. Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1175705 Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Chamber,Historic,Instructional,March. 156 pages. Regis Bookshar #775820. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.1175705). Heroic Music - A Suite of Twelve Marches (Complete) - Georg Philipp Telemann - Brass Quintet, Timpani - Intermediate - Digital Download.Heroic Music (or Heldenmusik) is a suite of twelve short marches and processionals, written by Georg Philipp Telemann in 1728, and is associated with various attributes of Heroism such as Dignity, Bravery and Alertness. All twelve movements have now been transcribed and arranged by Regis Bookshar to be played by Trumpet Quintets or Brass Quintets. Some of them have also been arranged for Sextets, Septets, Octets, Nonets and Brass Choirs. Some also include a Timpani. They can be purchased individually, or, if you prefer, as a complete set of all twelve at a huge saving.Any of these selections would be a wonderful addition to any music library, but this complete set of all twelve would be fabulous. They are perfectly suited to recitals and public performances, can stand alone as short interludes and are generally well received by audiences. They are suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing these arrangements. These selections are some of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. In the past, these compositions have often been performed by a soloist playing on a Piccolo Trumpet, but these new arrangements are Bb Trumpet friendly as one player stated after playing through them, making them much easier for most high school students. This selection, Heroic Music - A Suite of Twelve Marches (Complete), is arranged for a Brass Quintet with some selections having a Timpani. There is also a version without the Timpani, if you would prefer. The twelve movements are as follows: No.  1. La Majeste (associated with Dignity); No.  2. La Grace (associated with Grace); No.  3. La Vaillance (associated with Bravery); No.  4. La Tranquillite (associated with Composure); No.  5. L'Armement (associated with Rearmament); No.  6. L'Amour (associated with Love); No.  7. La Vigilance (associated with Alertness); No.  8. La Gaillardise (associated with Abandon); No.  9. La Douceur (associated with Gentleness); No. 10. La Generosite (associated with Magnanimity); No. 11. L'Esperance (associated with Hope); and No. 12. La Rejouissance (associated with Joy). To hear what they sound like, search for each selection individually. I was not able to download the large mp3 file. Included are scores and a complete set of parts (156 pages). These selections are readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of these compositions. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous selections in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. I am certain that these wonderful arrangements of Georg Philipp Telemann's Heroic Music will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792120). This Prelude No. 7 is an early work and one of Bach's best known of what is now known as Book 1 of the Well-Tempered Clavier. There is much in this little work actually, the most extended in Book 1. Mr. Denroche's arrangement works perfectly for Brass Quintet and is transposed down to the key of C from the original e-flat. The range is modest and most moderately advanced groups can perform it.

Published by dorm40music.com (A0.785279). Mahler's 10th symphony was left unfinished at his death in 1911. All five movements were completed in short-score with memos regarding instrumentation written in the margins. However, Mahler constantly revised his works so no one can be certain what the 10th would have been like if it was completed. The most performed orchestral version was written by Deryck Cooke. This version of the 2nd movement Scherzo is arranged for brass quintet. It is very difficult but makes for an excellent concert piece.

Published by Robert Delfausse (A0.766945). This 3-movement brass quintet is program music, in that it is written in the style usually used to depict the American West, and frequently has the instruments taking on the speaking roles of cowboys or other western characters. The first movement has a group of cowboys sitting around a campfire telling tall tales (at least this is what I had in mind). In the second movement ranchers (or farmers) are waiting desperately for rain, which comes only briefly. The third movement involves rival families, a surprise wedding, and a square dance. Silly, maybe, but it helped me write the music, which is fun to play. Suitable for advanced intermediate and professional quintets. Duration: 11 minutes, 11 seconds.

?What is This Lovely Fragrance?? (?Quelle est cette odeur agréable??) is a 17th-century French traditional Noël (carol) about the Nativity of Christ. The melody accompanying its lyrics, a folk tune, was used by John Gay (1685?1732) in his satirical work, The Beggar's Opera (1728). It is this tune to which the text, calling the shepherds to the manger, is typically set. What is this lovely fragrance wafting like to the scents of flow'rs in spring? / Shepherds, O tell us, whence such beauty, hear you not heav'nly carolling? / What is this lovely fragrance wafting like to the scents of flow'rs in spring? While still in his twenties, Debussy composed two arabesques for piano. The first, tempo marked ?Andantino con moto,? is probably the more familiar, and it has appeared in a number of different instrumentation settings. With respect to brass quintet, ?Arabesque No. 1? seems written specifically for Horn in F to take the lead, and that is what this arrangement features. Trumpets and Trombone do help out, but for the most part it is the Horn that shines forth. (And, for once in a Les Smith arrangement, the tuba has it relatively easy.) This arrangement was completed in 2012, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 38 seconds. Contact the arranger, Les Smith, at lessmith@ufl.edu. Here is a completely different take on this well-known Christmas carol. After an introduction that proudly establishes the ?O Holy Night? refrain, a 10-measure prelude sets the tone for the rest of the piece. Then comes the carol itself. But what a special version! Upbeat and celebratory, it uses the differing tonal colors of the brass quintet instruments to create pyramids of buoyant sound, winding up with a restatement of the introduction. This arrangement was completed in 2012, and performance time runs about 1 minutes, 32 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1251231 Composed by Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Comedy,Pop,Standards,Traditional. 37 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #845507. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1251231). This song starts with the narrator/lyricist saying that he overheard a guy at the train station trying to say farewell to his girl.  The guy would kiss her, bid her adieu, get on the train, then get off and do the whole thing over again.  And, he did this seven times!  What would he say to her each time?  He’d tell her that he’s leaving, that she shouldn’t cry, that he’ll write and that if she does not hear from him she should assume he’s been arrested.  What a romantic line!   Anyway, that’s the gist of the “Toot, Toot, Tootsie!†lyrics.  Credited to Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo, New York City’s Leo Feist, Inc. first published this upbeat, leave-taking song in 1922.  It had been one of 29 numbers featured in the 1921 Broadway production Bombo, a vehicle designed to showcase the talent of Al Jolson.  Six years later Jolson sang it in The Jazz Singer, generally recognized as the first sound feature film.  Additionally, all three composers, plus Ted Fio Rito and Eddie Cantor, also made early and very popular recordings.  This bubbly, cheerful arrangement opens in the key of F major with a suggested tempo of 120 BPM.  After an 8-measure introduction, the piece goes right to the familiar chorus with Trumpet 1 and Trombone switching leads and ending with a wonderful Fillmore-style smear.  The tempo then slows dramatically for a somewhat pensive interpretation of the verse, the narrator’s observations, Horn and Trumpet 1 alternating the lead.  At measure 67 the chorus repeats faster than ever, a recommended 132 BPM, as Trombone and the two Trumpets take turns with the melody.  This leads right into a repeat of the verse—this time played at full speed—and a change of key to D-flat major.  Trombone and Tuba play in unison, exchanging the melody with Trumpets, right on into the third go-round of the chorus.  The piece wraps up with a vaudeville-style conclusion and eventually fades away.  (But don’t miss Trombone's four-measure reference to “Charlottetown Is Burning Down/Goodbye, Liza Jane†at measure 141.)Lots of fun!  Completed in 2023, performance time at the suggested tempo runs about 2 minutes, 47 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808700 Composed by Frank Loesser. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Contemporary. Score and parts. 16 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #5020113. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808700). Brandon Thomas’ three-act farce, Charley’s Aunt, opened in London in 1892 and was a huge success. It has since been performed and adapted many times. One such adaptation was Where’s Charley? a 1948 Broadway version with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. Ray Bolger played the starring role as Charley, and its most memorable number was the second act’s Once In Love With Amy. Every night Bolger would perform the number, then turn to the audience and invite them to sing along with him. They loved it, and Bolger would continue to perform it as his signature act for years even after the play closed. The rhythmic and melodic nature of Once In Love With Amy, particularly its chorus, seems to lend itself to performance by musical instruments in the lower registers. And that’s what inspired this arrangement in which bass tuba carries the load with strong support from euphonium and tuba. All play the eight-measure introduction, while the verse-I caught you, sir, having a look at her as she went strolling by-features euphonium and tuba playing melody while bass tuba provides tempo and pulse. Then comes the familiar chorus-Once in love with Amy, always in love with Amy-and bass tuba takes over. The first time through, bass tuba plays melody with the other two providing accompaniment; the second time, bass tuba plays an intricate counterpoint while euph and tuba do a rather smooth swing version of the melody. Then comes the surprise ending in which all three participate. Most players will have little trouble. The arrangement consists of 75 measures in 4/4 time. There are several tempo changes; the fastest is quarter note equals 108. Key signature is G, changing to F at measure 44. All notes for euphonium and bass tuba should be within normal playing range. Tuba, on the other hand, plays quite a few G and A notes at the top of the treble clef. Sweetwater Brass Press also offers a similar version of Once In Love With Amy arranged for brass quintet. This arrangement was completed in 2020, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 1 second. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for euphonium) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1249433 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Chamber,Christian,Easter,Historic. 29 pages. Regis Bookshar #840537. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.1249433). Three selections based on Christ lag in Todesbanden (Christ lay in death's bonds) (from Cantata No.  4, BMV  4) - Johann Sebastian Bach - Brass Quintet (2 Trps, 1 Hrn, 1 Trb, 1 Tuba) - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download.Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, Christ lag in Todesbanden (also spelled Todes Banden) (Christ lay in death's bonds) is a cantata for Easter written by Johann Sebastian Bach and is his earliest surviving Church Cantata. It was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism.Regis Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.  4, BMV  4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement is more complex than the previous one. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, the final chorus from his Cantata No.  4, a straighforward four-part setting of the hymn (Regis has also added a fifth part). This is followed by Bach's Chorale Prelude, BMV 625, a piece from his Orgelbuchlein (Little Organ Book), a collection of 46 Preludes for organ, written almost exclusively during the 1708-1717 period, while Bach was court organist at Weiman. For the final selection, Regis has placed the polyphonic and imitative chorus, Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, da Tod und Leben rungen (It was a strange battle, that death and life waged), which Bach had placed in the middle of his Cantata No.  4.This arrangement is for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Bb Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (29 pages).I hope you will enjoy playing these selections and please search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432 By Stan Kenton & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Pop,World. 39 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #817754. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1221432). Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kenton’s 19-piece big band? No, not really:  no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . .  Well, you get the picture.  But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style.  And that’s what this is:  “The Peanut Vendor†in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.   Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero†(“The Peanut Vendorâ€) was first recorded in the late 1920s.  The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts.  Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze†in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!).     Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio MachÃn on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold.     English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.† One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made.  That’s a lot of peanuts.    Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor†in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records.  His version was completely instrumental.  Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis.  A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.† “The Peanut Vendor†subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.   This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets.  So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody.  Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba.  The “shrieking dissonances†are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone.  The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody.  Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style.  Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments.  (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances†are still there!)     Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1458413 Composed by Spencer Williams. Arranged by Will Corbin. Blues,Historic,Jazz. 22 pages. Will Corbin #1037395. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458413). Basin Street sits on the edge of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. It has since been recorded by dozens of other artists. If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1373864 By Bobby Darin. By Paul Francis Webster and Sonny Burke. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Blues. 17 pages. Peet du Toit #958338. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1373864). Black Coffee is a song with music by Sonny Burke and words by Paul Francis Webster. The song was published in 1948.It's first two measures are nearly identical to Mary Lou Williams' 1938 piece What's Your Story Morning Glory, and both songs share melodic motifs drawn from blues (including a strong melodic emphasis on the flat third and flat seventh intervals, known as blue notes). Williams felt that Burke and Webster plagiarized her composition, and reportedly considered taking legal action over the matter. The two songs have significant melodic and rhythmic differences after the first two measures of their respective 'A' sections, and Black Coffee has a unique bridge section that has no parallel in Morning Glory. However, during her piano solo, Williams plays both the identical feel and harmonies that appear on Black Coffee, with dominant chords moving up and down by half steps in lieu of staying on the tonic chord. While not a carbon copy, Burke and Webster arguably picked sections of What's Your Story Morning Glory to string together to create a new song. Coincidentally, jazz trumpeter Paul Webster (no relation to lyricist Paul Francis Webster) was given co-writer credit for Morning Glory by Williams when she published her song in 1938.My dear friend, Sam Harrill, has added his percussion magic some years later, and I am re-posting this for greater effect. Nothing in the brass parts changed. Thank you, Sam!

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158398 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Historic,Patriotic. 18 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758679. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158398). Composed to commemorate the 20th year of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. This somber, gorgeous piece of music draws tears when presented correctly, and is an extraordinarily important contribution to the brass quintet repertoire. The Jewish “feast†(or “appointed timeâ€) of trumpets, as outlined in Leviticus 23:24-25, prescribes the observance: “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.†According to the Jewish calendar, the feast of trumpets in 2001 coincided exactly with the 9-11 attacks, which could indeed be thought of as “an offering made by fire.†Effectively no servile work was done on that day throughout the attacked nation, and it has indeed become a somber type of “sabbath†to observe every year. It seemed extraordinarily appropriate—perhaps even requisite—that a somber composition with trumpets be composed for the 20th annual observance of the horrific attacks on American soil, as a “Memorial†to those lost that day, and those who since perished in the Global War on Terror. “Where were you when you first heard about the 9-11 attacks?†This common question is posed to those who were of age to comprehend what had happened in 2001. Personally, I had just listened to an emotional rendition of Maurice Ravel’s “Pavane to a Dead Princess.†Elements of that musical memory influenced this present work “Memorial.†Other sources of inspiration—whether intended or subconscious—include Samuel Barber’s heart-wrenching “Adagio for Strings,†Michael Kamen’s “Quintet†for brass, and John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen.†The harmonies are thick and often dissonant, including many suspensions. The players get little rest, symbolic of the constant state of alertness of a shocked nation after being so brutally attacked. Perhaps of greatest symbolic import is the fact that there are exactly 911 notes in this composition. Because of this, it is crucial that the percussion part be performed, and that great care be taken by all performers to refrain from altering the notes or rhythms in any way. A comment on the interpretation of notation: all long notes that are tied to a staccato note on the downbeat are to be held to the downbeat and gently released, not held over.

Brass Quintet Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1453216 Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Classical,Historic,March,Patriotic. 17 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #1032444. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1453216). Written for the Sousa Band’s second year at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and probably inspired by what would later be known as the Miss America Pageant. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Atlantic City Pageant was composed in 1927, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2020. The piece is catalogued as Volume 6, No. 107.Section titles (such as “First Strain” and “Trio”) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.
