Published by Will Corbin (A0.1460701). Bobby McFerrin's goofy little song, released in 1988, won the 1989 Grammy for Song of the Year. It was the first a capella song ever to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It has also been listed by Rolling Stone as one of the all-time great whistling songs. This version relies on the trumpets for whistling and trombone and horn for the lyric lines. It's also MUCH shorter than the original, since it's endlessly repetitive and quicly grows old without accompanying comedic effects.This one is also a pretty good set or gig closer.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1465659). This song was written by a Dutch singer, Johannes (Hans) Bouwens, who performed under a country-music stage name, George Baker. It's kind of a sappy peace-and-freedom anthem that topped Billboard's easy listening chart for 1976. A clue to the nature of the song: Slim Whitman covered it. And a Brit band gave it a kind of Weird Al treatment, recasting it as I Am A Cider Drinker. I wanted to challenge myself with these various styles while infusing the quirkiness of Thomas into the heart of the piece.I. HipThis summer I was able to pass through New York City on my way to a graduate school audition. On the train ride there I ended up next to a kid who was grooving to music I could hear snippets of through his headphones. This movement reflects characteristics of the sounds I heard on my way into the city.II. One for the lovebirds…It’s time to cuddle up next to your partner and take a trip down memory lane. This movement is an ode to the slow songs one may have experienced from a dance in the 1950’s.III. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. After he finished I approached him and asked him what he was playing. What he revealed to me was hilarious and this movement is homage to that occurrence.- Matthew NunesWindsor, December 2014.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458394). TUBA ALERT! Most recorded versions of this Henry Mancini classic hand the melody to flutes and piccolos. But baby elephants don't piccolo, they tuba. (This from actual personal experience.) So the heavy melodic lifting in this arrangement goes there. The song was featured in the 1962 latter-day John Wayne adventure romance comedy Hatari, a film from which its theme song is the only thing worth remembering. The song won Mancini a 1963 Grammy for best instrumental song. A 1962 recording by Lawrence Welk (!) reached No. 48 on Billboard's Hot 100. Shall We Dance, from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King And I, debuted on Broadway in 1951 and in the movie version in 1956, with Deborah Kerr lip-synching Marni Nixon as she and Yul Brynner polka around the Siamese palace. This arrangement draws from the movie rendition, which ranks No. 54 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie songs. But don't play it in Bangkok. Thailand banned the movie (and a subsequent remake) not long after its release, based on the not entirely inaccurate assessment that it reflects poorly on the Brynner character, the real-life King Mongkut, great-great-grandfather of Thailand's current monarch. De facto Anthems of the Confederate States of America ''I Wish I Was in Dixie & Taps''- ''God Save the South No. 1'' - The Bonnie Blue Flag, ''God Save the South No. 2'', arranged for Brass Quintet & Percussion.The Confederate States of America (also referred to as The Confederacy or simply The South) had, like the United States at the time, several patriotic songs in use which could have been considered anthems, like Dixie, The Bonnie Blue Flag, and God Save the South, none of which were officially declared (possibly because declaring an official anthem wasn’t as important to a new nation then as it is now). God Save the South does have more of an anthemaic quality in the music and lyrics, and several publications of the song refer to it as a (or the) anthem, and was also the first song to be published in the Confederacy (which was subsequently published in at least nine editions).God Save the South was written by George H. Miles under the pseudonym Earnest Halphin, soon after the war started. Miles was a Marylander, a state that did not officially secede and join the confederacy, but, being a border state, had several citizens with sympathies for the south. An interesting thing to note about the song is the reference to George Washington (the first president of the United States) in the song’s fifth verse. Apparently, the author of the song meant to tie in Washington’s stance as a rebel against the British in the American revolution with the South’s rebellion against the northern United States in the civil war.The music was written by C. W. A. Ellerbock, but another tune by C. T. De Cœniél was also popular at the time as well. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1459167). A song doesn't get more traveled than this one. American Cole Porter wrote it in 1935 while on a South Pacific cruise between Indonesia and Fiji aboard a British liner. Its roots are in a Latin dance from the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. So it's somewhere between a minuet and a samba. The name of the dance, beguine, is Creole (probably pejorative) for white woman. The song was first performed in a Broadway musical called Jubilee. It didn't get much traction until Artie Shaw recorded it with his big band, in a purely swing mode, in 1938; it became the 3rd best-selling recording of the year and set off a new dance craze. Check out the drummer in the YouTube video of Shaw's band performing the song, with special attention to the drummer. It's a young and relatively quite subdued Buddy Rich. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, sticks pretty close to a Latin feel except for a swing break in the middle.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help.
