The first half underscores time lapse footage of the rapidly melting snowman, syncing precise sforzando punctuations to moments of falling chunks. The sunset remains were gleefully decimated by our six-year-old James.Shuttle from Haneda depicts a delayed return from a trip. The video elicited an atonal compositional style to underscore the hustle and chaos of a city as enormous as Tokyo, but with a lovely view of the Bay about midway through the work.Petite Wave was composed to accompany a time lapse hanging of a three-panel canvas print of the woodcut art “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai in 1831. This art was featured on the cover of Claude Debussy’s “La Mer” when it was published in 1905, prompting a quote from “La Mer.”Fast Food to Fitness aurally illustrates a pan of nine fast food ads on a sheet. The bottom ad ironically promotes “BeFit 360”. The music has a series of exciting flourishes that morph into a sinister chord as the last ad dampens the caloric prospects.Pigeons personifies a substantial flock of pigeons contentedly pecking at grass. I filmed while slowly approaching, occasionally causing a stir. The nervous flock took flight to find less threatening spot of ground to peck. The scene presented some fine opportunities for musical underscoring.Blue Snowman Group accompanies a rare Tokyo storm that dumped inches of wet packing snow. When my ten-year-old started rolling the base of a snowman, I whipped out my cell phone and started a time lapse video. Mom came out and built her own, armed with a spray bottle of colored water. The two snowmen turned blue in the cold and lived happily together for a couple of days.Autumn Fuji Puzzle undersores tightly crafted moments of puzzle-working and deconstruction.Outing in Japan was crafted to highlight key moments of a time lapse, running errands in northwest Tokyo. Many subtle and obvious moments in this work aurally augment visually stimulating moments, including blinking turn signals, passing traffic, turns, vehicle approaches, parking at destinations, and many more.

Timing: 6-8 MinutesDifficulty- later Intermediate -Advanced, due to the key signature.Suitable For: Any time of the year, but especially around Christmas time, or at a concert that needs a Medieval flair.Gaudete is perhaps the most famous Christmas melody from the Middle Ages, likely dating from the 1500s, and covered by many a modern band, including The King's Singers, Erasure, and Steeleye Span, to name a few.To write this piece, I took motifs from the tune and wrote my own melodies, avoiding a direct transcription of any part of the original melody. Mvt 1, Fanfare, is a bright opening to the suite. After all, the word Gaudete translates to “rejoice”!Mvt 2 plays with the Pavane and Galliard feel. Both are distinct dances, and while this movement is more somber than danceable to the average listener, it utilizes some tricks that the medieval composers used, as well as draws inspiration from medieval compositional techniques for harmonies. Just like medieval dances, if you were to add a repeat sign at the end, you could play this movement ad nauseam and choose to never end it.Mvt 3, Scherzo, plays with your expectation of time but is a fun jaunt after the serious tone of Mvt 2 nonetheless. If you like Gordon Jacob (not a Renaissance composer), you’ll probably like this movement.I’ve included Mvt 0, Just Gaudete, as a bonus. You may begin or end the suite with this movement, play the opening statement to introduce the audience to the tune, or omit it entirely. You may even shuffle the order of movements if you’d like.

The result was the now-familiar red-nosed reindeer. (For those born in later generations, Mongomery Ward was a giant, like Sears, in the mail-order retail business. Kind of like Amazon without the Internet.) May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, turned it into a song a decade later. Gene Autry recorded it for Christmas in 1949, and it immediately hit No. 1 on the pop music charts. It was still there at the end of the first week of January, making it the first No. 1 hit of the 1950s.Its sales since then, including countless covers, have surpassed 150 million. Drunken Sailor (letteralmente: Marinaio ubriaco) è un canto marinaresco, conosciuto anche come What Shall We Do with a/the Drunken Sailor? (letteralmente: Cosa faremo con un/il marinaio ubriaco?).Questo canto di lavoro nacque per accompagnare certi lavori a bordo di velieri, specialmente quelli che richiedevano un passo svelto e vivace. Si pensa che il canto risalga ai primi del XIX secolo o anche prima, in un periodo nel quale le ciurme delle barche, specialmente quelle dei vascelli militari, erano sufficientemente numerose da poter tirare una corda semplicemente marciando lungo il ponte. Con l'avvento delle navi postali e i clipper e le loro ciurme ridotte, che richiedevano differenti metodi di lavoro, l'uso di questo canto è progressivamente scemato o è passato all'accompagnamento di lavori meno faticosi.Drunken Sailor è poi divenuta una canzone popolare fra i non-marinai nel XX secolo, fino a essere considerata uno dei canti marinareschi più conosciuti dal pubblico. Numerosi artisti ne hanno proposto la loro versione in registrazioni e/o esibizioni e i media hanno contribuito alla sua popolarità . Anche se non esiste una versione univoca del testo, esso contiene costantemente la domanda What shall we do with a drunken sailor, early in the morning? (letteralmente: Cosa faremo con un marinaio ubriaco, la mattina presto?). In alcune versioni, i versi successivi suggeriscono metodi per alleviare la sbornia o punire il marinaio ubriaco. Altre versioni, invece, prevedono il susseguirsi di ulteriori domande e risposte relative ad altri personaggi.

Corelli's Christmas Concerto composed around 1690 is formally known as Concerto Grosso Op. 6, No. 8 published posthumously in 1714 as one of twelve works under opus 6. The composer inscribed it Fatto per la notte di Natale Made for the Night of Christmas. The final movement is the famous Pastoral ad libitum traditionally performed for Christmas eve services. Originally scored for a chamber string ensemble, Paul Erion has brilliantly arranged this 15 minute work for a brass quintet of advanced performers.Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in C (B-flat parts supplied as well), Horn in F, Trombone (some tenor clef) and Tuba.

Hans Leo Hassler (1562-1612) was truly a Renaissance man. Not only was he a noted composer of sacred (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and secular music both instrumental and vocal, but he was also a talented organist, Kappelmeister in various churches and cities, music businessman and additionally involved in the construction and manufacture of mechanical musical instruments. Though spending most of his professional life in German (Augsburg, Nuremburg and Dresden), Hassler studied with Andrea Gabrieli in Venice alongside fellow student Giovanni Gabrieli. These three vocal works highlight his integration of the leading compositional styles of the time including his foray into significant chromaticism in his Ad Dominum, cum tribularer. Brass quintets will find these three vocal transcriptions a welcome addition to the literature and concert repertoire. The arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets with optional C trumpet parts, horn in F, trombone and tuba.
