This 3-movement brass quintet is program music, in that it is written in the style usually used to depict the American West, and frequently has the instruments taking on the speaking roles of cowboys or other western characters. The first movement has a group of cowboys sitting around a campfire telling tall tales (at least this is what I had in mind). In the second movement ranchers (or farmers) are waiting desperately for rain, which comes only briefly. The third movement involves rival families, a surprise wedding, and a square dance. Silly, maybe, but it helped me write the music, which is fun to play. Suitable for advanced intermediate and professional quintets. Duration: 11 minutes, 11 seconds.

The words to the song were written by John Newton, an Englishman who was the captain of a slave ship. After a huge storm at sea, his ship began to sink and he called out to God for help. The cargo in the hold shifted and blocked more water from entering the hull. By the time his ship drifted back to land, he had become an evangelical Christian, and from then on, gave up drinking, gambling and profanity. It was during his later life as an Anglican cleric that he wrote these words.

His music was also highly regarded by his contemporaries, including Johannes Brahms and Claude Debussy.Edvard Grieg died on September 4, 1907, in Bergen, Norway, at the age of 64. The piece takes off immediately with a thematic statement in the trombone, breaking in a duet with the horn. Additional entries keep massing in the lower voices until most of the ensemble is involved. All of a sudden, the upper brass, silently present the tune in block harmonies until the lower brass present a countermelody. Now! Everybody’s involved. Next, a dialog between the upper brass and middle brass takes place as it alternates back and forth. With a modulation in place the tempo goes slow, the tune is in the lower brass- expressive! All of a sudden from bottom to top motives are presented- in stacked chords…. This goes through different transformations until the piece elevates into an uplifting conclusion.

Director of the Hampton Institute, Dett developed the college's choir with his compositions and conducting into one of the leading choirs in the nation. Always looking to improve his compositional capabilities, Dett studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. This brass quintet arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets (alternate C trumpet parts included), horn in F (alternate flugelhorn substitute part), trombone and tuba. The Merry Peasant was written by Schumann in 1848 when it was included in the first part of his ‘Album for the Young’ which was written for his three daughters. These comparatively easy pieces were intended to be played by children or by beginners. It is often now given the more contemporary title of The Happy Farmer which is used for this publication. The style and the major key evoke a sense of a rural worker returning from the fields at the end of the day in a good mood. The melody inspired the song Red Wing (1907) and it was used in the underscore of the film, The Wizard of Oz.

The result was the now-familiar red-nosed reindeer. (For those born in later generations, Mongomery Ward was a giant, like Sears, in the mail-order retail business. Kind of like Amazon without the Internet.) May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, turned it into a song a decade later. Gene Autry recorded it for Christmas in 1949, and it immediately hit No. 1 on the pop music charts. It was still there at the end of the first week of January, making it the first No. 1 hit of the 1950s.Its sales since then, including countless covers, have surpassed 150 million.
