The Finnish NA arranged for Brass Quintet.There also versions for String & full Orchestra in my two stores.The anthem lyrics were taken from a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Swedish-speaking poet, called “VÃ¥rt land†(Our Land). The song was first sung in 1848 by a student group and became popular in Scandinavia and many of his patriotic poems, including VÃ¥rt land were used by promoters of Finnish nationalism. The poem was translated into Finnish some decades later, after VÃ¥rt land was well established as a national song, by Paavo Eemil Kajander and became the anthem before 1917 independence. Estonia‘s anthem, adopted 20 years later, has the same melody, however the last few lines do not repeat as they do normally in the Finnish anthem. Interestingly, the anthem has never been officially legislated as the Finnish anthem, but rather is traditionally used as the anthem. As such, there is no standard way to perform the 11-verse anthem, but usually the first and the last verses (as presented here) are sung. There sometimes arises a debate in Finland to change the anthem to Jean Sibelius’ song “Finlandia†(the melody was used in Biafra), a song recognized internationally as a symbol of Finland, but the general opinion seems to be for now to keep the current anthem. \\\"Resonet in Laudibus\\\" (\\\"Let the voice of praise resound\\\") is a Medieval carol known in Europe at least since its appearance in the Moosburg Gradual of 1360, and probably much earlier. Today, it is well-known as the tune accompanying the text of the traditional German carol, \\\"Joseph Lieber, Joseph Mein\\\" (\\\"Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine\\\") and John Mason Neale\\\'s \\\"Christ Was Born on Christmas Day.\\\"
The tune appears in the Medieval songbook, Piae Cantiones (Pious Songs), compiled by the Finnish priest and headmaster Jaakko Suomalainen (aka Jacobus Finno, or \\\"James the Finn\\\") and published in 1582. Ralph Vaughan Williams harmonized the tune and included it in the English Hymnal (1906), of which he was music editor.
This lovely, lilting tune is an ideal vehicle for a sonorous arrangement for brass quintet.

Arranged for Brass Quintet, Ålänningens sång (Finnish: Ahvenanmaalaisten laulu; English: Song of the Ålander) is the official anthem of Åland, an autonomous Swedish-speaking province of Finland. Adopted in 1922, the anthem's words are by John Grandell, and the music was composed by Johan Fridolf Hagfors. The song was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn 1922. In Åland, the song is mostly sung on Midsummer's Eve and on the national day of Åland on 9 June. The song originally had four verses, but the third verse has been omitted for a long time when the song is sung and often when it appears in print.Johan Fridolf Hagfors (11 March 1857–18 August 1931) was a Swedish newspaper publisher, music critic and composer, most known for having composed the two songs Modersmålets sång (The mother tongue's song) and Ålänningens sång (Song of the Ålender).Born in Orimattila, he got a Cand.phil degree in 1881. In 1883 he became publicist of the small Åbo paper Turun Lehti which was published in Finnish but at the same time Svecoman; it became the only newspaper with that combination to reach a wide readership. He also worked as a teacher in Åbo.He composed several songs for male quartets. Modersmålets sång was first performed in 1989 and is today considered an unofficial hymn for the Swedish-speaking population of Finland. Ålänningens sång, for which he composed the melody, was first performed during the song festival in Mariehamn in 1922 and is today the regional hymn for Åland.In 1912 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.Due to stiff competition, Turun Lehti ceased publication in 1919. Hagfors subsequently moved to Stockholm and obtained Swedish citizenship. He died in 1931. Fellow composer Erik August Hagfors was his half-brother.

An 19th century English hymnwriter took a 13th century Easter tune he found in a 16th century Finnish song collection and turned it into a tribute to a legendary 10th century Bohemian nobleman. (Bohemia today is in the Czech Republic.) Turns out Wenceslas, around whom a cult developed in his native land and, inexplicably, in England, wasn't really a king, so Holy Roman Emperor Otto made him an honorary one after his death, since he was sunch a king of a guy.All that notwithstanding, it's still a pretty good Christmas carol for a brass quintet.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. Good King Wenceslas, a traditional Christmastime favorite has been transformed by this arranger into a spectacular brass quintet feature. It is joyous and energetic and demonstrates strong melody content with antiphonal bell-like sounds and subtle echoes. Two modulations and three easily played key signatures make this piece a winner for any brass quintet. 1st trumpet part to high D measure easily plays one octave lower if need be. This is a grade 4 level - medium advanced arrangement and will be a definite audience favorite. The original melody/tune was based on a 13th-century spring carol Tempus adest floridum (The time is near for flowering) was first published in the 1582 Finnish song collection Piae Cantiones.
