The Water is Wide is a beautiful song of longing and separation. There appears to be confusion as to its origins; some writers saying it is Scottish and others claiming its roots to be English. It is also known as ?O Waly Waly? or just ?Waly Waly?.

While living and working in France I discovered a hugely-popular version by the singer-songwriter Renaud. His version is entitled La Ballade Nord-Irlandaise and is a pacifist song referring to the troubles in Northern Ireland.



This arrangement is designed for more-experienced players. It is an excellent item for concert programmes, encores, weddings or background music.

Scarborough Fair is a much-lovedtraditional English ballad, the text of which dates back to medieval times. Ithas been recorded many times by contemporary artists, most famously, Simon andGarfunkel.

In making thisarrangement I am attempting to create a work suitable for the more-advanced orconcert player. My intention has been to use the original theme to construct apiece with structure and harmonic depth.

Scarborough Fair iscomposed in the beautiful, ambient Dorian mode. It is firstly presented in ADorian and midway, modulates to D Dorian before returning to the original modewith a coda. By adjusting the sixth degree of the scale the theme is also heardin Aeolian mode.

I am excited at theidea of using well-known themes to create a concert repertoire suitable for allenvironments and which will appeal to guitarists and non-guitarists alike.

I have also triedperforming the piece with a capo placed at the second fret when I have felt myprogramme needed more harmonic variety.

It is possible to play only some parts,not necessarily the whole piece from start to finish. Order in whichthe variations are played can be modified too; for example A D E G HI J K. There are many possible combinations. This piece can also be performed as aduo by 2 guitar players. The second variation can be played togetherwith either first or third variation at he same time.

This arrangement is taken from Linda Ronstadt's 1977 recording. It includes all verses and choruses, the pedal steel solo and all harmonies as they appeared on the recording. Be sure to palm mute the basses! Capo 2 if you'd like to play it in Linda Ronstadt's key.
