This is a solo guitar arrangement of the 1st Movement of Beethoven's "Moonlight" Sonata. It was arranged in the key of D minor to make it more suitable to the guitar fretboard, which is also a half step higher than the key Beethoven had originally chosen for the piece.

This is possibly my most prized arrangement for solo classical guitar of all. This is the entire piece as Gounod composed it, minus the very beginning intro, but including the portion of the intro where the 6/8 count begins. Although advanced, the fingerings, barre markings and string designations are all shown in each of the complicated areas and worked out very smartly for the smoothest transitioning, possible.

Barrios had originally composed La Catedral in 1921 as a two-movement piece and so the piece was originally known as having only these two movements. Some seventeen years later, he then composed another piece entitled 'Saudade' (available, separately, as a stand-alone piece) and then a year after composing it, decided to include it as the prelude to the already existing two-movement version. Although it is well-known that Barrios' always included Preludio 'Saudade' whenever performing La Catedral, there are actually no original written copies of the three-movement version.
In this arrangement, some liberties were taken with Allegro Solemne in the 21st measure as it was thought to make for a smoother progression.

The fact that Lecuona wrote thepiece in the style of Spain is likely what makes the Spanish guitar arrangementfeel like it belongs to the instrument. Another reason for its association withSpanish guitar is the fact that the main melody from the piece was notLecuona?s invention but was taken from the ?Malague�a? flamenco form,originating out of M�laga, Spain, in the 19th century. ?Malague�a,? and themelodic lines associated with it, is one of the traditional styles ofFlamenco/Andalusian music. This rendition is ?in the style of Sabicas,? aSpanish Gypsy guitarist who is considered by many to be one of the finest flamenco sologuitarists of his time. Lecuona?sMalague�a is typically found as a solo piano piece in the key of C# Phrygian,whereas on the guitar, (as is the case with this arrangement) it is normallyarranged in E Phrygian.
