My guitar arrangement of Spancil Hill includes notes, tab, chords, lyrics as well as an intro and patterns that serve to accompany the song. Spancil Hill continues to be a very popular Irish ballad with listeners and guitar players. I have included the chords so that you can use them as an easy accompaniment for a singer or other instrument such as recorder, violin or flute that takes the treble clef melody part. Use the Intro of this arrangement as a basis for the R.H. fingerstyle pattern for song accompaniment . Also weave in and out of picking melody and bass patterns with the guitar fills I include in the score to add interest to the accompaniment . Check out 'The Dubliners' version on YouTube and if you want to play along you just need to place the capo at the 5th fret on your guitar and play the same chords as in this arrangement. I also recorded the audio clip with the capo on the guitar at the 5th fret. Listen to this intro to Spancil Hill and you will get a good idea how to accompany the song using a flat picking technique of plectrum picking out the bass notes interspersed with a Down Down Up Down strum plectrum rhythm. The words to “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence†is based on the Old Testament book of “Habakkuk 2:20 and became part of the “Divine Liturgy of St James†in the fifth century and was chanted.  The melody had its origins by Gerald Moultie 1829-1885 who based it on a medieval French folk melody called Picardy. There have been other translations and arrangements, most notably by Ralph Vaughan Williams 1872-1958.This relatively easy arrangement for Classical Guitar is first in D minor with the melody in the treble and then a very creative version with the melody in the Bass.  It wraps up in E minor with a lot of open strings and going all the way up to the 12th fret.  The overall result is beautiful and if you can play the basic “F†type bar chord it is not real difficult to play.Note that the YouTube video has a slightly different arrangement (actually a performance error) but I doubt you can find it.  The audio file provided here is correct.

At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. Brad is also the classical guitarist for Disney's Princess Breakfast Adventuire at Disneyland's Grand Californian Resort. ?Mattonya? is a soloacoustic finger-style guitar composition. Like ?Krisomas?, ?Mattonya? was composed for Mattand Tonya?s wedding, hence the name. ?Mattonya? is from my release ?BeyondWords? and included in my newest compilation. ?Together As One? which is songsI composed for weddings as ?Mattonya? created this theme. ?Mattonya? opens with no intro, gets right to the theme. The theme is in 4/4 and switches elegantly to 6/8, a delightful change. ?Mattonya? could be a welcome part of your show and is appropriate for schools, students, and church services for special events or concerts. "Mattonya" is an easy flowing piece which needs compassion. The 6/8 section does need to be steady and aggressive. Practice this section with a metronome starting out about 90 BPM's or what's comfortable. Then build up to 125 BPM's, the original tempo. It's important to adhere to the fingering, it works really well. Standard tuning. I've had a lot of success with "Mattonya" and I'm confident you will too! Enjoy and please share your comments.
