Many of the arrangements that are out there don’t have same notes as the original, and therefore some of the cleverness and simplicity of the original gets lost.This arrangement uses the same shapes as the original, and there’s tablature as well so that you can easily see that almost all the measures in the music have the same right hand fingering, despite the mix of open and stopped strings making the score look much more complex than it actually is!Set in the same key as the original, the tune does go rather high but it’s not difficult to play and it makes for much greater clarity than playing down the neck.As the piece progresses, both players have a go at the tune and also the accompaniment...Each guitar part is provided in score (which will easily fit on a music stand) and score + tab which is a bit more bulky.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

My arrangement can be played as a performance piece, or with a small adjustment, as a student/teacher duet.My arrangement has two verses, and these are orchestrated differently - one in an arpeggio style and one in a countermelody style. You can mix and match the arrangements as you wish and it’s easy to add extra verses too. The tune is fairly low in pitch so that the tone is warm and mellow, but it needs to project over the accompaniment which straddles it in pitch.If you play the arrangement as written, each player gets a verse on the tune and a verse playing the accompaniment - perfect for performance.If you are a teacher, then your student can play just the page containing the tune, and you can accompany them - indeed, if you take their second page, you can play two different accompaniments while they play two verses of the tune...I hope you enjoy this piece!

Bach Prelude from BWV998 for 2 GUITARSFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This wonderfully lyrical Bach Prelude is one of the most famous preludes to fit onto guitar.I hope you’ll find it’s also one of the best to fit onto two guitars!The original was in the key of Eb major and the facsimile score I used as the basis for my arrangement was for keyboard. I’ve simply taken all the original music and split it across two guitars in the key of D, to give a wonderful stereo effect and to make the phrases stand out. The original had very specific rests in the bass lines which are pretty much automatic on a harpsichord with limited sustain, and quite easy to do on a modern piano. For a guitar, the mix of open and stopped strings can make consistent note lengths quite hard to achieve, and I have included a second arrangement in which the bass notes are notated as ringing on (as indeed most solo guitarists do, starting with the first note of the piece!). The result is a score which is much easier on the eye, and the “decay†of the guitar's bass notes mean that it doesn’t sound at all untidy - indeed it sounds more mellow.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. The tune is handed from player to player, switching at each phrase boundary, and appears in three different octaves during the piece, while still remaining on the playable part of the guitar neck.There are no repeats in this piece, and that allows changes to the texture in the successive verses.I’ve performed this piece in concert and it’s always been a great crowd-pleaser.I have also published a version which suits a student/teacher duo or a duo of mixed abilities which is a little easier to play. Both will be familiar to many guitarists as they have featured over the years in a number of Graded Examinations.The countermelody is a new addition, which I originally wrote for flute, so that the piece slotted seamlessly into the background music I played with my flute partner at a friend’s wedding.The Tanz is often mistakenly translated as Dance of the Washerwoman, and it’s also known as Wascha Mesa. The Hupfauf is a companion piece, set in a different rhythm but with ostensibly the same harmonic structure (apart from the Tanz’s Coda which is absent from the Hupfauf).Each dance has two beats in the bar, and the two dances can flow into each other or can be played with a short break. When they run into each other, it makes sense to maintain the two-beat pulse, but if this makes the Hupfauf stressful to play, one can maintain instead the value of the half note (minim), so that the Hupfauf proceeds at a more modest pace.You can play the whole piece (each player plays tune and countermelody in turn), or you can shorten the piece by omitting the sections starting at A and B, which also makes the piece ideal for a mixed ability duo, as one player keeps the tune and one keeps the countermelody.Feel free to add dynamics, a little more articulation and possibly some tone color changes.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

An original and beautiful new guitar transcription by Faure here for guitar duo by Jan Hron. The Grove Dictionary describes Faure as the most advanced composer of his generation in France and notes that his harmonic and melodic innovations affected the teaching of harmony for later generations. He shunned virtuosity in favour of the Classical lucidity of the French masters of the hapsichord. the precisely articulated melodic line of his songs is in the finest tradition of French vocal music. His great Requiem and his Elegie for Cello and Piano have entered the general repertoire. The "Cantique de Jean Racine" op.11 was originally written for mixed choir and piano (or organ) and dedicated to Cesar Franck, it was composed in 1864-5.
