Great fun to play without being too technically challenging so you can add it to your set quickly and easily.

I wrote this chart for the Madison County (GA) Middle School Jazz Band a couple of years ago and named it after the river that I would cross each morning as I entered that county on my way to the school from home. All rhythm section parts are fully notated in this chart, but these serve as suggestions and tools for building improvisation and comping skills. The same can be said for the written solos for tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone. Each solo section can easily be opened / extended for improvisation. I hope you and your young jazz ensemble enjoy Broad River Blues!

Dah Duh Daht! is a great jazz ensemble chart for 1st year jazz bands at the middle school or high school levels. The main objective of the chart is to teach basic swing concepts, along with simpler piano voicings and bass lines for your first year jazz students. Dah Duh Daht! is the literal articulation and rhythm translation of the main motif of the tune that is passed around the brass and saxophone sections.Dah Duh Daht! also uses a 12-bar basic blues form in the key of Bb, which also makes it a great chart to teach jazz improvisation and blues form. At the time it was unusual to have a rock/pop band do a song in this jazz blues style. It was released as the B-Side to their Daydream Believer single. This is the long version with sax and trumpet solos transcribed. This was a mainstay in their concerts. The song was used to mimic the end of any James Brown concert. It's a very fast song. NEW BLUE SHOES is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2003 Australian Academy Festival of Music C Grade Jazz Ensemble division. This arrangement will work equally with a reduced ensemble, as indicated on title page of the score. The arrangement begins with a unison statement of the head from the trumpet section with the sax section taking it up later in the arrangement. Rhythm section parts are fully notated to assist younger players. There is solo space for any trumpet, trombone, and sax with changes and written solos included on every part in the appropriate section of the arrangement. Use this space to feature soloists in the group and encourage all to try their hand at improvising. Encourage students to listen to the great jazz players to help them learn the language of jazz and develop their own ideas.
