John Ivor Holland #1079695. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1504237). Man of La Mancha is a 1965 musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, music by Mitch Leigh, and lyrics by Joe Darion. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes and his 17th-century novel 'Don Quixote'. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight Don Quixote as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition. The work is not and does not pretend to be a faithful rendition of either Cervantes' life or Don Quixote (Wasserman complained repeatedly about people taking the work as a musical version of Don Quixote). The original Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical; it has been revived four times on Broadway and there have been mulitple productions in different laguages around the world, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre; it was adapted into a movie in 1972, starring Peter O'Toole. The Impossible Dream is one of the enduring musical themes throughout the show and has also been performed by many diverse artists over the decades, including Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones and Aretha Franklin.

I arranged this piece at the request of my friends in the 2020-2021 Viking Jazz Ensemble at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. We hoped to do Blame it on the Boogie for that year's Prism concert, and they had asked my director to find an arrangement. He found one, but it was out of print. We were already playing an arrangement I did of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, so my friends turned to me and said, You can do one more, right? A year later, the 2021-2022 Jazz Ensemble performed this in front of 4 sold-out Prism concerts. This arrangement won first place in the WSMA 2022 Student Composition Project Arrangement Category- High School Division. This arrangement starts with the original melody and harmonies as presented on the original recording. The intro features bass and bari sax, the verse melody is passed to the saxophones, and the chorus is in the hands of the trumpets. I know. Scary. The second verse takes a turn, changing keys to the relative minor and changing feels into a jazz-latin groove. The melody starts in the trumpets and moves to the saxophones, while everyone else is comping on a montuno-based rhythm. The second chorus serves as a Breakdown section and transitions the piece into the solo section. The solo section is heavily inspired by the steel pan music of Trinidad and Tobago. The transition from the chorus into the solo section is stolen from Summersong, a piece of steel pan literature. The chord progression is ripped from the soca tune Pan in A Minor by Lord Kitchener. The backgrounds are traditional strum rhythms from the genre. The transition out of the solo section is a chromatic line also commonly used in steel pan music, especially pieces performed for the annual steel pan competition Panorama. The final chorus is presented in the same style and key as the original recording. Some slight changes are made in the backgrounds, and the entire band brings back the idea from the introduction to bring the piece to an end. This piece exists for one reason only: for you and the audience to have fun.

Suitable for programming by both student and professional ensembles.RACONTEUR (The Storyteller) is a modern jazz-rock ballad composition written and arranged for a modified large jazz ensemble instrumentation. Parts for C Flute and Tuba are scored to add those unique timbres to the ensemble sound.Rather than feature a single instrument, the melody is purposely distributed throughout the ensemble. However, the musical focal point of the piece is intended to be the featured improvisation solo space provided for Bb Tenor Saxophone 1. Since each improvisation is original and unique, the music should retain a newness with each performance. A theory sheet is also provided for less experienced improvisers to enhance soloist creativity within the intended harmonic context.Scored for groups performing at the medium level (grade 2.5 - 3.0), the unique chord progression provides the soloist with myriad possibilities from which to construct improvisational melodies. Suitable for programming by both student and professional ensembles.RACONTEUR (The Storyteller) is a modern jazz-rock ballad composition written and arranged for a modified large jazz ensemble instrumentation. Parts for C Flute and Tuba are scored to add those unique timbres to the ensemble sound.Rather than feature a single instrument, the melody is purposely distributed throughout the ensemble. However, the musical focal point of the piece is intended to be the featured improvisation solo space provided for Bb Tenor Saxophone 1. Since each improvisation is original and unique, the music should retain a newness with each performance. A theory sheet is also provided for less experienced improvisers to enhance soloist creativity within the intended harmonic context.Scored for groups performing at the medium level (grade 2.5 - 3.0), the unique chord progression provides the soloist with myriad possibilities from which to construct improvisational melodies. Improvisation is a key element of jazz music. Thus, this improvised solo will also inherently impact the level and quality of the entire sound of each ensemble performance.Brass ranges are purposely kept very reasonable. Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece. Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, national pep. The Tag Blues is a theme from RIB that is used as connective tissue throughout the piece. It is most famously stated in the bass clarinet. It is know as the the Good Evening Friends theme. In this arrangement, it is lifted from RIB and presented as a stand-alone blues tune. There is a solo for piano and tenor sax, but any member of the band could step in and solo on its simple blues changes. Difficulty level is intermediate and certainly playable by most high school jazz ensembles. Lead Tpt G5.

A simple, interval rich melody for the specialized trumpet solo or quartet in the Funky zone leads into Latin tags that introduce the rest of the band with accents that create tension for the transition sections. A short solo section sets up a continuation of the quartet restatement of the melody with all sections jumping in to play supportive roles. The primary solo section breaks down to an expanded quartet ensemble solo not designed for the faint of heart.
