(Originally devised as practice piece for bass guitar, on which 4ths can be awkward to be play :)After a couple of statements of the head, an open soloing section follows. The backing parts introduce a new counter theme. This is followed by a bit of a slow Gil Evans type moment, with a final full on, no holds barred restatement. Frederick (A0.1043910). Good News is an original straight-ahead swung tune for jazz/swing band or ensemble. It is written for standard instrumentation (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section). A catchy trombone soli melody opens the tune at 120 beats per minute. Room is provided for soloists to stretch out including a written-out optional solo for tenor sax and trumpet. The tune builds toward a double forte section with all instruments playing in a contrapuntal ensemble before the final statemenbt of the melody. This piece will make a wonderful addition to any program. This is an original arrangement for a jazz/swing band with standard instrumentation (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section).See all of my arrangements here

If you are looking for a swinging addition to your holiday concert repertoire, George West's arrangement on Santa Claus is Comin' to Town is the chart you've been looking for! The melody is stated first by the trumpets, and the trombones take over at the bridge. Tenor sax has the solo, but there is an optional repeat for additional solos. This chart is one of my favorites, and it will have your audience tapping their toes!Grade: 3Ranges: Trumpet: D6 Trombone: Bb4 About George West: Trombonist and educator George West (1931-2013) was founder and head of the jazz program at James Madison University for 25 years, from 1971 until his retirement in 1996. He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.

FIX IT AGAIN TONY! is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2002 Australian Academy Festival of Music B Grade Jazz Ensemble division. It is a blues in F with a grooving shuffle feel. In the opening choruses, the big band is divided into three smaller combos playing the head, backing riffs and rhythmic stabs. Be sure to have the players listen carefully to each other and to be aware of which combo they belong to. Solo space is provided for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone players, although this could be opened up to feature other band members. The solo section is followed by a Sax section soli before the head returns to take the chart out. The inspiration for this title came from my first car - a 1970 FIAT 124 - which provided me with many years of enjoyable motoring.
