With the optional repeat, the chart weighs in at about three minutes, and could even be performed with both tuba and bass as the parts are virtually identical. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862693). Bohemian Rhapsody, the Song of the Moment, the Film of the year, and the piece everyone wants to try and play! Here is a setting for a standard jazz ensemble with ONE main Idea: Let's NOT make this a guitar piece, but a Horn Piece. So, we have all the same structures as the original recording, right down to the time changes, and the shift from slow to fast and back again. The saxes are given the solo vocal line harmonized as a typical sax soli. The brass take Queen's vocal overdubs and operatic elements, and are given a jazz rather than a pop harmonic setting, with some extended and altered harmony, rather than just the triads and 7th chords of the Queen vocal. Sax ranges go to the top of the horn for lead alto, and go to a concert Ab just above the staff for the lead trpt. Trombone goes to a high Bb in the lead solo. First ending should appear at ms. 29 to the repeat. 2nd ending at ms. 35The guitar solos are given to either the piano, in octaves, or the brass, so that a guitar player is an option here, not a necessity. Revised version here, with ending placement errors all fixed up! This is NOT a jazz chart in the improvisational sense: it is a pop song set for a jazz ensemble. The introduction sets up a repeating harmonic pattern, which returns at various points during the arrangement, which gradually picks up steam and swing, unfolding in a lush cadence as the vocalist launches into the poignant lyric. Saxophone writing draws upon the usage of trills, across-the-barline quadruplets, and harmonized flourishes. Unison piano and (optional) vibraphone parts will bring to mind the musical code for entering Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Room. The orchestration benefits from a variety of dynamic shadings and the use of bucket mutes for the trombones and cup mutes for the trumpets. Dramatic moments are emphasized with mallets. This hard swinging, up tempo arrangement is written in the style of the Count Basie Orchestra.  It starts out small with a Piano solo and builds throughout with additional solos in the Trumpet, Tenor Sax, and Trombone. Written as a tone poem honoring the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the piece also has moments for piano, 1st alto, and guitar. The piece starts softly, with piano and first alto playing in duet as the rest of the band slowly enters. As the trombone states the theme and then improvises, the piece crescendos into a massive, Kenton-esque release before winding back down towards an unresolved, tense, final chord, reminding listeners that the threat of war still looms over humanity.
