The timeless sounds of the Vince Guaraldi Trio from the “Charlie Brown Christmas†1960’s television special was expanded to an exciting rendition recorded by the Doc Watkins big band. This arrangement captures the spirit of that recording and observes the original key of both recordings. This is an advanced level arrangement where solid high brass ranges are needed. The opening piano part is faithful to the original Guaraldi version, then opens up into latin-flavored open solos section where Trumpet and Trombone soloists can stretch out for a little while. The rhythm section parts are all fully notated other than the solo section, where the initial 2-chord changes of the groove is written out and can be directly repeated thereafter. There is an open vamp after the trombone solo to allow for an extended percussion feature, yet this can be cut and move directly into the ending instead. A great way to add this holiday standard onto your program!

It was released on the Blue Rock label (4014) in May 1965 with Sir Mack Rice as the artist. The song uses an AAB layout with a 24-bar structure.It gained greater popularity when Wilson Pickett covered it the following year on a single, a version that was also released on the 1966 album, The Wicked Pickett. Also in 1966, John Lee Hooker recorded an entirely different song with a similar title - Mustang Sally & GTO.This Big Band / Jazz Ensemble vocal version of this Rock and Roll standard will have your audience dancing in the aisles. Here is a setting for a standard jazz ensemble with ONE main Idea: Let's NOT make this a guitar piece, but a Horn Piece. So, we have all the same structures as the original recording, right down to the time changes, and the shift from slow to fast and back again. The saxes are given the solo vocal line harmonized as a typical sax soli. The brass take Queen's vocal overdubs and operatic elements, and are given a jazz rather than a pop harmonic setting, with some extended and altered harmony, rather than just the triads and 7th chords of the Queen vocal. Sax ranges go to the top of the horn for lead alto, and go to a concert Ab just above the staff for the lead trpt. Trombone goes to a high Bb in the lead solo. First ending should appear at ms. 29 to the repeat. 2nd ending at ms. 35The guitar solos are given to either the piano, in octaves, or the brass, so that a guitar player is an option here, not a necessity. Revised version here, with ending placement errors all fixed up! This is NOT a jazz chart in the improvisational sense: it is a pop song set for a jazz ensemble. Our audio clip shows the opening trombone solo with the piano accomp, into the main vocal line harmonized with saxes. The score precedes the parts in the PDF file, with coverpage and a blank page, so print double-sided until pg. 27. Parts begin at pg. 28 and should be printed single-sided. MBB

Transport your audience back to the psychedelic, hippiest Age of Aquarius with this Jazz Band original by Bob Marshall. Reminiscent of Woody Herman's The Herd, Don Ellis Big Band, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Band and others, Marshall perfectly captures the style and drive of those bands in that era with The Dream Maker. After a rhythmic, full ensemble intro, the piece settles into a fluid melody featuring Flugelhorn (a la Chuck Mangione). The melody restates with a soli of 2 trumpets and 2 trombones before going into a driving soprano sax lead section soli. But wait, it's not over yet: the ensemble breaks down to just the rhythm section in unison. Adding sections one at a time the chart continues to build to a roaring climax before a D.S. that features a wailing tenor sax solo. Restating the melody once more and a big outro The Dream Maker ends the journey and all is well! The piece is a Charlie Parker-Style blues with a modal bridge. After the theme, a short tutti leads to a series of solos with backgrounds for various saxes and brass, finishing with a full ensemble chorus out. The chart can be opened up for additional solos if desired. GateWay Editions Jazz Ensemble Series titles feature SampleSolos for most improvisational sections, so your band can learn to play the section material AND blow on changes at the same time.
