Shifting time funk (for 5 wind instruments and rhythm section)! The title expresses my disdain for contending with monster SUVs when driving on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. As I envision this music, it is funky and adventurous. The piece is a minimalist composition -- the melody is only 16 bars. However, it has expanded improvisation concepts for the soloist and the ensemble. The ensemble's collective improvisation is to sound like music coming out of car windows in traffic. The sounds change quickly. Different kinds of music come, go, and overlap. Radios (or electronics) may be used for additional layers of sound. The soloists use four chord progression patterns. Each soloist determines which patterns to play and their sequence. The patterns can be played in any order. Ideally, the patterns are determined within a performance instead of before. The soloist communicates the patterns, and when to shift to a new pattern, to the ensemble by hand signals. The ensemble (including horn players) can improvise backgrounds and interactions with the soloist. Music styles can also shift within a solo. Performers can take the music in any creative direction they want to go with it. Note: There are differences between the score and the demo recording. The small group recording was made (from a lead sheet) several years before my mid-size ensemble score was written. For this new recording, the horn parts from my score were added to the earlier recording. The video syncs the pages of the score with the recording as closely as possible. I had the opportunity to take a grand tour to the wonderful country of Brazil which I had always dreamed about. I can say it didn't disappoint. Before computers could imitate an orchestra well, I bought in Salvador many Brazilian instruments and carted them back home. This piece for jazz orchestra was the beginning of my personal renaissance as a composer, and here it is, all shiny and new and revised. The piece begins with a fast Samba, slows to mysterious calls of the rainforest, travels through Rio's bossa nova and ends with a bang. New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. It is based on an 11-tone harmonic complex and a series of tonal effects providing backgrounds to, and interactions with, the soloist. The role of the soloist is entirely improvised. The soloist can conceivably be any instrument. Additionally, the soloist does not have to be limited to one musician. It can be expanded to multiple musicians -- up to the size of a small band (any genre). Any creative possibility can be explored. I envision this composition as being a framework for a collective creative process to take place between the soloist, conductor, and ensemble with each interacting with the others. In this way, the score is a point of departure for wherever the musicians want to take the music. PARTS: Smaller Ups And Downs does not have a set of parts. Blues For Lester (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an extended piece with an eclectic blend of jazz, funk, contemporary classical, and blues. It is an expression of my admiration for Lester Young, the great tenor saxophonist, who had many quirky qualities in his music. This piece draws upon aspects of Lester Young's playing that I admire and have internalized: His horizontal approach to harmony, how he played around with time in his phrasing, used wrong notes (from a vertical chord perspective) at times, and had an audacious sense of humor. These are expressed in Blues For Lester in my own style. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. Buzzards In Love is an extended piece for concert band that draws upon many influences including jazz, classical, and tango. It tells a story about two buzzards finding each other. This piece is a way for concert band and jazz band musicians to join forces in a performance with a spirit of fun and adventure. The score has two sections where improvisation is used. The Roadkill Interlude section is an open space for anything that is creative and fun to happen. Ideally, it is different for each performance. This is a funky straight up blues tune that I've had for a while. Built around a steady, mechanical riff laid out in the bass guitar and guitar, this work features plenty of soli playing throughout the different sections. The smeary main theme, introduced by alto and bari sax in unison, is later picked up by the rest of the section as well as the trumpets in the playout at the end. The saxophones in particular are strongly encouraged to make the most out of the bends, scoops and dips as indicated. There is an open solo chorus for a guitar solo. This tune has gone by many names in my mind over the years (Texas Trout, Rudie-Nudie Blues, I Think Your Dog Has Worms), but have at last settled on Blues Against The Machine for the main title, as I think this captures the contrast between the bluesy melody with the machine-like riff.

Published by George Willson (A0.1242133). The Center Of The Universe is a a landmark in downtown Tulsa that is a bit of broken pavement on a bridge across some railroad tracks. Where its name comes from is the unusual acoustic properties that one experiences when standing on top of that broken pavement. Those outside the circle can't hear what the person is saying, and when speaking, the person in the circle can hear their voice echoed back to them. Scientifically, it is said to be its unique position in relation to the nearby buildings of downtown, but even so, it has become a strange tourist attraction. To exemplify these strange acoustic properties, this big band piece is written in an unusual time signature for the blues: 5/4. That, in itself, makes it inherently difficult to play since most jazz musicians are tuned into 4/4 with the occasional 3/4 or 12/8 thrown in for variety. Yes, others have done it, but this adds another entry to that very short list of big bands tunes in 5 to make us think of that weird spot downtown where sound just doesn't behave the way it seems like it should.George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.MP3 rendition is an extract of the composition program.
