While not a Christmas song, it has become an enduring part of the holiday repertoire. A partial list of artists who have covered it include Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Rod Stewart, Jo Stafford and Idina Menzel. I treated this arrangement of Carry On Wayward Son as a restoration arrangement, making every effort to capture the sounds in the original Kansas recording on their classic 1976 release Leftoverture. The form follows the original, with solo space for alto sax 1with the initial statement of the melody on solo trombone. The key signature is neutral, with accidentals placed as needed. Guitar and/or piano would also be fantastic. Grab some 70's classic rock vibes with this chart!

By the time the song officially became the country’s anthem in 1931, it had been one of America’s most popular patriotic tunes for more than a century. The anthem’s history began the morning of September 14, 1814, when an attorney and amateur poet named Francis Scott Key watched U.S. soldiers—who were under bombardment from British naval forces during the War of 1812—raise a large American flag over Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. This traditional treatment of the anthem may be useful for public performances, school performances, graduation, or patriotic programs. This work was originally composed for choir by Bernadette Debattista and was first performed at the Dawn Service, commemorating the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, in ANZAC Cove on 25 April 2015 by a combined choir from St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows’ School. This extended work sees the original theme recomposed for big band and choir. It may be performed in its entirety or the third movement may be omitted (or presented as spoken word only) if a choir is not available. The sax section requires the following doubles: Clarinet for Alto Saxes 1 and 2, and Tenor Sax 2; Flute for Tenor Sax 1; Bassoon for Bari Sax (although a Bari Sax part with no doubles has been included). There is also an optional part for Eb Sarrusophone! Trumpets require Flugelhorns and Harmon mutes.The recording features excerpts from each of the four movements and a brief description of each follows.1. Distant Shores With its jaunty, march-like feel, one can only imagine what it must have been like as these young men and women travelled to far off places, fired with the thrill of adventure, blind to the trauma and terrors of war. 2.Your Sons Are Our Sons The title for this movement is a paraphrase of a line in a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in which he speaks of the special bond between Australia and Turkey. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised. (A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). What if Benny Carter had not sailed for Europe in 1935 to become staff arranger with the BBC, but instead had helped out Benny Goodman with providing scores for his ‘Let’s Dance’ program? And suppose Carter had done the same trick that Fletcher Henderson pulled later on, e.g. adapting already existing scores of his own band for the Benny Goodman Orchestra? Carter’s ‘Symphony In Riffs’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. The sax soli written by Carter is there, but the clarinet dominates the second strain in a Glenn Miller-styled section, and of course later with an extended solo. Other soloists include trb 1, piano, tpt 2 and ts 1. The two different strains are juxtaposed to each other, to make for a maximum of variety. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Difficult for multiple reasons: • The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’. Fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. • Strong lead-alto required, with an old-skool ‘singing’ tone. • Lead trumpet must be able to ‘carry off’ the final section from bar 197 onwards. • Driving rhythm section needed; swinging (preferably acoustic) rhythm guitarist and a bassist who doesn’t shy away from playing compelling bass-lines. This is a funky straight up blues tune that I've had for a while. Built around a steady, mechanical riff laid out in the bass guitar and guitar, this work features plenty of soli playing throughout the different sections. The smeary main theme, introduced by alto and bari sax in unison, is later picked up by the rest of the section as well as the trumpets in the playout at the end. The saxophones in particular are strongly encouraged to make the most out of the bends, scoops and dips as indicated. There is an open solo chorus for a guitar solo. This tune has gone by many names in my mind over the years (Texas Trout, Rudie-Nudie Blues, I Think Your Dog Has Worms), but have at last settled on Blues Against The Machine for the main title, as I think this captures the contrast between the bluesy melody with the machine-like riff.

Here's a fun big band composition inspired by the title phrase, Wackadoo! In most parts of the world, this phrase means someone who is crazy. However, in Australia it has a different usage, as an exclamantion indicating something fun and exciting, but typically delivered in an understated/unassuming way.This tune certainly has some funky wackiness, but is underpinned by down-home, old-timey (even corny!?) melodic material and a funky groove throughout. The saxophone section is featured extensively in the soli sections and with a solo section open for lead alto or tenor sax.Rhythm section parts have some complexity in some of the written parts, however have chord changes indicated throughout to enabling players to render their own groove if the written parts are too difficult.Hope you enjoy!

Chick Corea recorded Samba Song on his 1978 Friends album with saxophonist Joe Farrell, bassist Eddie Gómez, and drummer Steve Gadd. Woody Herman recorded a fantastic John Fedchock arrangment of Samba Song on his 1987 Woody's Gold Star album that unfortunately was never published.This challenging Fedchock-inspired arrangement features a sax soli, followed by two solo sections that can spotlight any instruments, and ends with an in-tempo drum solo. Any of the solo sections can be cut or extended as desired to make the piece as short or long as desired. True to the original Corea version, a 6-bar hemiola section toward the beginning will keep everyone on their toes. The top lead trumpet note is a written E6.
