Stride: from Rhapsody In Blue- Arrangement for Little Big Band/ Jazz Ensemble. Difficulty: Intermediate. Based on a theme from Rhapsody In Blue by George Gershwin. Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece. Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, “national pep”. This is known as the Stride theme because of it’s resembling a typical stride piano accompaniment so prominent in the era. Here, it is presented as a stand-alone tune. Little Big Band- The arrangement is playable with rhythm section (piano/guitar, bass, drums)and 3 to 6 horns. Horns in order of importance: 1st Trumpet (1st Part), Alto Saxophone (2nd Part), Trombone (3rd Part), Tenor Saxophone (4th Part), Baritone Saxophone (5th Part), 2nd Trumpet (6th Part). By the time the song officially became the country’s anthem in 1931, it had been one of America’s most popular patriotic tunes for more than a century. The anthem’s history began the morning of September 14, 1814, when an attorney and amateur poet named Francis Scott Key watched U.S. soldiers—who were under bombardment from British naval forces during the War of 1812—raise a large American flag over Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. While the harmonies are in a jazz style, the original melody remains in tact so that it could be performed with the audience or school choir. The brass ranges are practical for advanced level middle school students with some optional octaves for the first trumpet. While the arrangement includes 8 brass, there is a considerable amount of doubling to accommodate smaller ensembles.

Tag Blues: from Rhapsody In Blue- for big band/jazz ensemble arranged by John Hoesly. Based on a theme from Rhapsody In Blue by George Gershwin. Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece. Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, national pep. The Tag Blues is a theme from RIB that is used as connective tissue throughout the piece. It is most famously stated in the bass clarinet. It is know as the the Good Evening Friends theme. In this arrangement, it is lifted from RIB and presented as a stand-alone blues tune. There is a solo for piano and tenor sax, but any member of the band could step in and solo on its simple blues changes. Difficulty level is intermediate and certainly playable by most high school jazz ensembles. Lead Tpt G5.

The song has become covered by later artists, most notably Amii Stewart in 1979. Stewart's disco version was the most successful on weekly music charts.Eddie Floyd's recording peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent one week at number 1 on the Soul Singles chart. The song was written in the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee (now The National Civil Rights Museum). Steve Cropper has stated in interviews that there was a lightning storm the night that he and Eddie wrote the song, hence the lyrics 'It's like thunder, lightning, The way you love me is frightening'. The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece. Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, national pep. Return Of The Blues is known as the ritornello (Italian: return) theme as it appears seven times during RIB. It is one of the more famous themes from RIB, being heard right after the clarinet glissando in the beginning of the piece. Here, it is presented as a stand-alone tune. It is written with a trumpet solo, but the solo can be played by any member of the band. Difficulty level is intermediate and certainly playable by most high school jazz ensembles. Lead Tpt Ab5.
