Published by R.J.Becker (A0.1209531). This lovely ballad was beautifully arranged by R.J. Becker for a (13 piece) Small Big Band (Alto Sax / Tenor Sax / Baritone Sax / 1.-3. Trumpet / 1. & 2. Trombone / Bass Trombone / Piano / Guitar / Bass & Drums. Even if the individual parts give the impression of a simple arrangement at first glance, one should not underestimate the sometimes challenging tuning due to the more complex chord progressions and their clusters. In addition, each individual player has to master her/his sheet quite soft (mp) throughout the entire piece - with the exception of a short passage. If these elementary details are observed, this nice tune is a treat for the audience as well for each player.

Published by Dana Usealman (A0.897949). 2018 Holiday Contest EntryFlexible arrangement of We Wish You a Merry Christmas for jazz solo, small ensemble, saxophone choir, jazz combo or beginning jazz band. I arranged this for my 7th grade jazz combo (a few somewhat advanced students that were interested in learning jazz). I initially arranged it for 1 trumpet, 1 sax, 1 tenor, and piano but it is a flexible arrangement with the melody doubled in the trumpet and sax and the tenor and optional trombone part have harmony. You could use the optional trombone in addition to the tenor or instead of tenor. If you use a bass or bari sax, tell your piano player to cut the bass clef and just comp on the chords. This arrangement would also work nicely as a saxophone choir, with or without piano accompaniment. You could even use this as a solo for one trumpet or one sax and piano. You can easily add a drummer and just have them play a simple swing beat.

Originally written by Grammy award winner Kevin Gilbert (Toy Matinee, Tuesday Night Music Club, and the solo records Thud, and Shaming of the True), Simpler Times was part of an unreleased collection of 1985 recordings by Kevin under the title Decent Exposure. During a period when Kevin was going by the name of Kai Gilbert he wrote, produced, and played all the instruments on three separate albums that have recently been formally released as part of the boxed set Call Me Kai. Kevin was a music student of mine at Serra high School in San Mateo, CA (yes, the same high school attended by Tom Brady) and remained a dear friend until his untimely passing in 1996 at the young age of 29. The Kevin Gilbert Estate, under the name GPP, serves as manager for all of Kevin's intellectual property and they have granted me permission to create this arrangement for jazz band and pursue its publication. Unlike the original dance-oriented track, I've reimagined Simpler Times as a medium tempo, straight 8th rock ballad featuring alto sax.

It’ funky 2 beat and make you want to clap your hands on 2 & 4. Fun to play, younger players can do it and learn. It usually works to have the horn players that are not playing in the first part of the chat clap their hands over their head on 2 and 4. This will get the people into it. This is a simple funky 2 beat and should be kept that way. Piano has dissonant afterbeats--should be soft.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

This is a slow start in the morning sort of blues, meant to be played like the coffee hasn't quite kicked in. It's a simple blues in Concert F (despite the key signature where I've added that flatted seventh!) and is a great vehicle for developing young soloists - or pushing those with more experience to new highs! The mp3 is just a MuseScore3 export, nothing fancy, but it gives you an idea of what to expect. I've not included any solos, making this a good mp3 to give to your soloists to play along with. It's not too tough, should be playable by many advanced grade school and all high school bands - and it's scored to sound good even with pro groups.

First adjust the tempo. This is Latin Big Band. Montunos are played at 175 or more, like sambas and merenges. The idea is a simple structure of 2,4,8 or 16 bars for solos, the harmonic content is limited so the soloist must be very clever. The piano is Cuban Style and written out. Will open for solos. Drums, bass & piano must be played as is to get the effect. . Good for programs or dances. . The rhythm section must play as written for the best effect. With the arrangement of Wayne Shorter's Infant Eves, I officially start the series dedicated to the most typical orchestral ensemble in jazz: the Big Band.The instrumentation is the traditional one: 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section (guitar, piano, double bass and drums).After a brief introduction, in which the double bass moves freely over an orchestral accompaniment, the exposition of the initial part of theme A is entrusted to the first trombone, followed by the saxophone section and then the trumpet section (B).This all flows into the last section of the theme (C), in a robust brass ensemble to which the saxophones respond with simple counterpoint phrases.The last four bars, again entrusted to the saxophones, gradually lead us to the solo section.The latter is developed over a chorus and a half, and each of the soloists is given one of the four sections (A, B, C, A): the first is by the first trombone (the arrangement's main soloist), the second by the first alto saxophone, while the third features the orchestra in a short nine-bar special, where the three sections chase and chase each other.The final solo part is then entrusted to the second trumpet, which gives way to the orchestra for the reprise of the remaining two sections of the theme as well as the inevitable coda.Altogether, the arrangement spans three complete choruses, plus the introduction and coda, for a total duration of just under seven minutes.I hope you enjoy this arrangement and, as always, I wish youGood Music!!!am.

This one was for an Ellington small group recording under Hodges' name in the late 1930's. It's basically just the first 4 bars of the blues and then Hodges improvises the rest of the 12-bar form. Ellington's later big band arrangement is a very simple enlargement of that original 4-horn chart. There are 2 ensemble choruses, 2 solo choruses, 2 sax section choruses ending with a stride piano cadence. The opening is a loud and glorious ensemble; the closing is a soft and introspective sax section.
