This is a funky straight up blues tune that I've had for a while. Built around a steady, mechanical riff laid out in the bass guitar and guitar, this work features plenty of soli playing throughout the different sections. The smeary main theme, introduced by alto and bari sax in unison, is later picked up by the rest of the section as well as the trumpets in the playout at the end. The saxophones in particular are strongly encouraged to make the most out of the bends, scoops and dips as indicated. There is an open solo chorus for a guitar solo. This tune has gone by many names in my mind over the years (Texas Trout, Rudie-Nudie Blues, I Think Your Dog Has Worms), but have at last settled on Blues Against The Machine for the main title, as I think this captures the contrast between the bluesy melody with the machine-like riff.

It opens with a fanfare-like passage for saxes, followed by trumpets and trombones, before getting into the swinging blues groove. After the first two choruses, the opening returns as a bridge passage before the open for solos middle section.Solos are based on a 12 bar blues pattern and should be 24 bars long. A sample written out solo is included in Tenor Sax 1 and Trombone 2, for those who are less confident at improvising. The main blues returns with a bit more pizazz before ending on the fanfare like passage for the whole band.Duration: 2'10 to 4' depending on number of solos.

The solo part has a written out solo with chord changes and the melodic line goes to hi A. This is a 12 bar form that is more ballad like than bluesy with a catchy memorable melody. Harmon mutes are essential for all trumpets.

This is a Big Band 12 Bar Blues in C (with a few alternate chords) with an 8 bar bridge. The 8 bar intro has a few stops and starts that feature each section of the band (Might be good as an Introducing the Band sort of piece!) and the head begins at A with an Alto/Trumpet/Trombone lead line. The full band joins in at the bridge and brings us to the solo section with changes written in Tenor 1 and Trombone 2. At G, the rhythm drops out, leaving the band to build to a re-iteration of the head and on out. This is a Grade 2-3 with Trumpet top note of Bb. Musescore was used for the mp3 - so large grain of salt on the audio!

Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece. Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, national pep. The Tag Blues is a theme from RIB that is used as connective tissue throughout the piece. It is most famously stated in the bass clarinet. It is know as the the Good Evening Friends theme. In this arrangement, it is lifted from RIB and presented as a stand-alone blues tune. There is a solo for piano and tenor sax, but any member of the band could step in and solo on its simple blues changes. Difficulty level is intermediate and certainly playable by most high school jazz ensembles. Lead Tpt G5.

FIX IT AGAIN TONY! is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2002 Australian Academy Festival of Music B Grade Jazz Ensemble division. It is a blues in F with a grooving shuffle feel. In the opening choruses, the big band is divided into three smaller combos playing the head, backing riffs and rhythmic stabs. Be sure to have the players listen carefully to each other and to be aware of which combo they belong to. Solo space is provided for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone players, although this could be opened up to feature other band members. The solo section is followed by a Sax section soli before the head returns to take the chart out. The inspiration for this title came from my first car - a 1970 FIAT 124 - which provided me with many years of enjoyable motoring. Blues for Munson is a hard swinging medium blues in F. The melody is originally stated in unison by trumpet, alto, and tenor, then once again in five-part sax harmony with brass backgrounds. The solo section calls for alto and tenor solos, with solo changes provided in all parts if additional solos are desired. A call and response section between the saxes and brass builds to the shout chorus before taking the melody out.
