This piece is part of a series of tango-jazz compositions. Each one explores a particular quality of the tango. Number 6 is about dancers becoming attuned to one another. Unlike my other tangos, New Tango No. 6 is entirely in free-time. The melody floats over the background with a fluid movement. This piece expresses an open approach to my music: anything can be tried with it. Using free-time in this way, the melody player(s) and the background players need to be in visual communication with one another on when to make the harmonic changes. Buzzards In Love is an extended piece for concert band that draws upon many influences including jazz, classical, and tango. It tells a story about two buzzards finding each other. This piece is a way for concert band and jazz band musicians to join forces in a performance with a spirit of fun and adventure. The score has two sections where improvisation is used. The Roadkill Interlude section is an open space for anything that is creative and fun to happen. Ideally, it is different for each performance. Contrasting traditional harmonic sections with vamp like textures, odd phrase lengths and his usual colorful orchestration, makes this one of Duke's great compositions.

Published by Manny Cepeda (A0.1024914). There is a saying in Southern California El Mero Mero also know in the United States saying as The Real McCoy. That is the idea expressed on this arrangement. A percussionist (Timbale Player), who is so good, no one is equal to him/her. At the end of the chart, there's a reference to a traditional song of the Mexican Mariachi band, giving more validity to the arrangement. This chart is best suited for advance Junio College bands and College Afro-Cuban/Caribbean Ensembles. It's rich with rhythm from Cuba and Puerto Rico and it requires a complete Afro-Cuban/Caribbean percussion section; Bongos, Timbales, Congas, and CowBell plus a well season singer fluent in Spanish to perform the chart properly. The chart would be a heck of an opener tune for a concert or performance.

Fanfare (for 4 or 5 wind instruments and rhythm section) was inspired by Brazilian brass bands. It was written for music students at the Sandy Spring Friends School in Maryland. This music has an exuberant spirit with samba rhythms churning under contemporary harmonic voicings. It is intended to be a short piece; however, the vamp at the end can be extended with a solo or collective improvisation. Another option is to have a percussion intro before the horn section enters with the opening chords. While Fanfare was draws upon Brazilian music, it is in my own style. Unlike my other pieces for mid-size ensemble, the rhythm section is optional for Fanfare. In this way, the piece can be performed by woodwind or brass quintets, clarinet ensemble, or sax quartet/quintet as several possibilities. Additionally, it can be easily adapted for big bands and larger ensembles by doubling players on parts so that each line has a distinctive blending of tone colors. Suggested assignment of parts for a big band: I -- 4 trumpets (open); II -- clarinet, soprano sax; III - alto sax, trombone (open); IV - tenor sax, trombone (cup), trombone (bucket); V - baritone sax, bass trombone (open). New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. Here's a fun big band composition inspired by the title phrase, Wackadoo! In most parts of the world, this phrase means someone who is crazy. However, in Australia it has a different usage, as an exclamantion indicating something fun and exciting, but typically delivered in an understated/unassuming way.This tune certainly has some funky wackiness, but is underpinned by down-home, old-timey (even corny!?) melodic material and a funky groove throughout. The saxophone section is featured extensively in the soli sections and with a solo section open for lead alto or tenor sax.Rhythm section parts have some complexity in some of the written parts, however have chord changes indicated throughout to enabling players to render their own groove if the written parts are too difficult.Hope you enjoy!
