By Joe Procopio These arrangements by Joe Procopio from J.S. Bach’s Flute/Violin Sonata II in Eb are special in many ways. Firstly, it fills the need for the very best in music combining the genres of both Classical and Jazz. In addition, it is also importantly unique because it may be performed by a variety of musicians. For example, the arrangement in C may be performed by 2 or more C Instruments including Flute, Piccolo, Oboe and Violin with a small band accompaniment (Piano, Guitar, Bass, and Drums - Guitar is optional). The work may also be performed with just the Piano and/or Guitar for accompaniment. What’s more, the Rhythm Track Accompaniment is available without the solo instruments adding to the already many attributes of this music that enhance its inherent genuine global appeal. This is critical because teachers, students and musicians worldwide are constantly seeking music of the highest quality that can be skillfully presented to the public while having, at the same time, built-in qualities both pleasing to the listener and the performer alike. Bach’s melodies have certainly stood the test of time and Jazz is without question internationally popular. That makes these arrangements truly worthy of attention from people, artists and publishers throughout the world. The composer personally has had great success with this work in many major concerts including its premier performance using a Flute Choir at a Civic Center Concert held in Syracuse, NY before several thousand people who triumphed the young musicians with a standing ovation. The melody by J.S. Bach used in this work is taken from the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe Band 9 and 1 Kammermusik BWV 1031- known as the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach which was published in 46 volumes from 1851-1899. A single volume was issued in 1926. The last surviving editor of the series died in 1928, and these volumes are now public domain worldwide. They are also held in acclaim because there are no articulation or expression marks in the Gesellshaft. Therefore, the articulation and expression marks written in these arrangements by the arranger are suggestions only. Musicians may perform the works in any manner best suited to the betterment of their own performance.

Composed in the 1970s around the time of the American bicentennial celebration, the title also refers to meter changes between 7/4 (written as 4/4+3/4) and 6/4. Your soloists only need to know two scales to solo on this tune: C dorian minor and Ab mixolydian. Range and technical demands are moderate. After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus. If you are looking for a change of pace for your concert or assessment program, this is an excellent choice!Grade: 3+Ranges:Trumpet: C6Trombone: G4 About George West: Trombonist and educator George West (1931-2013) was founder and head of the jazz program at James Madison University for 25 years, from 1971 until his retirement in 1996. He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. The song is based on Paul Keating's 1993 eulogy at the interment of the Unknown Soldier, one of Australia's most iconic speeches. Kernaghan said the song was inspired by Keating's immortal words, He is all of them. And he is one of us. This particular arrangement was premiered at a special concert commemorating that centenary of Armistice Day on 11 November 2018. The band accompaniment is fairly straight forward and not too demanding of the players. It became a standard song among jazz musicians, especially after Miles Davis recorded it. There is a wonderful version recorded by saxophonist Cannonball Adderly on his 1955 album “Cannonball Adderly With Strings”. PERFORMANCE NOTESSurrey With the Fringe on Top is a 32-bar AABA form in the key of concert B flat. In this arrangement, the A-section melody features several tongue-in-cheek grand pause moments. These are indicated by fermatas over quarter note rests. Have fun with these spots, varying the length of time you pause, which can done with a comical effect. The solo section at bar 37 is open to any player, and a set of notes is provided for improvisation. The backgrounds at 41 are to be played each time, and the solo section can be repeated as necessary for additional solos. The shout chorus at bar 47 should be played at full volume. Be sure to investigate and balance the chords among the wind instruments. The shout chorus winds down with a call and response between the brass and saxes.I hope you have fun with this classic tune!

I arranged this piece at the request of my friends in the 2020-2021 Viking Jazz Ensemble at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. We hoped to do Blame it on the Boogie for that year's Prism concert, and they had asked my director to find an arrangement. He found one, but it was out of print. We were already playing an arrangement I did of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, so my friends turned to me and said, You can do one more, right? A year later, the 2021-2022 Jazz Ensemble performed this in front of 4 sold-out Prism concerts. This arrangement won first place in the WSMA 2022 Student Composition Project Arrangement Category- High School Division. This arrangement starts with the original melody and harmonies as presented on the original recording. The intro features bass and bari sax, the verse melody is passed to the saxophones, and the chorus is in the hands of the trumpets. I know. Scary. The second verse takes a turn, changing keys to the relative minor and changing feels into a jazz-latin groove. The melody starts in the trumpets and moves to the saxophones, while everyone else is comping on a montuno-based rhythm. The second chorus serves as a Breakdown section and transitions the piece into the solo section. The solo section is heavily inspired by the steel pan music of Trinidad and Tobago. The transition from the chorus into the solo section is stolen from Summersong, a piece of steel pan literature. The chord progression is ripped from the soca tune Pan in A Minor by Lord Kitchener. The backgrounds are traditional strum rhythms from the genre. The transition out of the solo section is a chromatic line also commonly used in steel pan music, especially pieces performed for the annual steel pan competition Panorama. The final chorus is presented in the same style and key as the original recording. Some slight changes are made in the backgrounds, and the entire band brings back the idea from the introduction to bring the piece to an end. This piece exists for one reason only: for you and the audience to have fun.

Over the course of a forty plus year career, Mr. Burnett has performed professionally around the world, recorded noteworthy albums as a leader, taught at the college-level and co-founded a significant independent recording label, Artists Recording Collective. Parts for C Flute and Tuba are scored to add those unique timbres to the ensemble sound.Rather than feature a single instrument, the melody is purposely distributed throughout the ensemble. However, the musical focal point of the piece is intended to be the featured improvisation solo space provided for Bb Tenor Saxophone 1. Since each improvisation is original and unique, the music should retain a newness with each performance. A theory sheet is also provided for less experienced improvisers to enhance soloist creativity within the intended harmonic context.Scored for groups performing at the medium level (grade 2.5 - 3.0), the unique chord progression provides the soloist with myriad possibilities from which to construct improvisational melodies.
